High school roundup for Oct. 18, 2024: Skyler Gates leads Brownsville volleyball to WPIAL playoff-clinching win

Skyler Gates had 24 kills and 10 blocks to lead Brownsville to a 3-1 victory over Chartiers-Houston (5-12, 5-9) in Section 3-2A girls volleyball Thursday night to clinch a spot in the WPIAL playoffs.

Payton Evanchak added 28 assists and 13 service points, Mia O’Hern had eight service points and six digs and Lydia Geary collected six kills and nine digs for the Falcons (8-11, 6-8).

Beaver 3, Blackhawk 0 – Sophia Sharpless led the defense with 30 digs, Aubrey Bumblis followed with 10 digs and Zoe Ringer dished out 41 assists and chipped in with 11 digs as Beaver (15-3, 10-0) defeated Blackhawk (11-3, 8-2) in Section 4-3A. Jaedyn Brown added 16 kills for the Bobcats.

Bentworth 3, Burgettstown 0 – Chelsea Dindal had 12 kills, Olivia Telegraphis added 12 digs and Zoie McDonald doled out 25 assists as Bentworth (8-10, 6-8) beat Burgettstown (6-12, 4-10) in Section 3-2A to clinch a WPIAL playoff spot.

Canon-McMillan 3, Bethel Park 0 – Abby Tucker and Natalie Carr each had 14 kills, Sophia Powell produced 12 digs and Cali Dagen followed with 11 digs as Canon-McMillan (15-1, 10-0) swept Bethel Park (3-13, 0-10) to finish its Section 1-4A schedule undefeated. Brooke Peters led all players with 20 assists and Carsen Brown dished out 10 assists for the Big Macs.

Carmichaels 3, Beth-Center 2 – Pacey Pratt had 19 kills and 16 digs and Bailey Barnyak collected 18 kills and 15 digs to lead Carmichaels (12-6, 10-0) to a perfect record in Section 3-A with a win over Beth-Center (12-4, 7-3). Ashton Batis had 25 digs and Reese Marzo handed out 49 assists for the Mighty Mikes.

Jefferson-Morgan 3, West Greene 1 – Alisa Long had 25 digs and 11 kills, Isabelle Bazzoli added 16 kills, Ava Wood had 15 digs, Lucca Jellots produced 12 digs and Kelsey Vessels added 11 digs as Jefferson-Morgan (9-10, 5-5) defeated West Greene (7-6, 6-4) in Section 3-A. Leighana Gooden led the Rockets with 11 assists.

Knoch 3, Valley 0 – Jess Farbacher had 18 digs and Karlee Buterbaugh added 16 kills to power Knoch (8-8, 4-6) to a Section 2-3A win over Valley (1-15, 0-10).

Laurel Highlands 3, Ringgold 2 – Alexandra Mattey had 14 kills and 17 digs, Sara Reed doled out 38 assists and Jayna Fabrey had 22 digs for Laurel Highlands (12-5, 9-3) in a Section 3-3A win over Ringgold (13-4, 9-3). Ayrianna Sumpter added 10 kills and Diondra Brown had eight blocks for the Mustangs.

Ligonier Valley 3, Deer Lakes 1 – Marlee Miller had nine kills and three aces, Lacy Sosko added eight kills and three blocks as Ligonier Valley (9-8, 5-5) topped Deer Lakes (6-10, 3-7) for a Section 5-2A win that clinched a WPIAL playoff berth. Rylee Monticue had six kills, five blocks and 13 assists for the Rams.

Mars 3, Freeport 2 – Ella Nicotra had a team-best 18 kills, Gabi Weidemann dished out 57 assists and Alaina Graham added 21 digs to lead Mars (14-4, 1-0) past Freeport (10-3, 7-3) in a five-set match in Section 2-3A. Lily Javor had 16 kills, Cecilia Christy 15 kills and Rylee Wooldridge 14 kills for the Fightin’ Planets.

South Allegheny 3, East Allegheny 0 – Ally Chizmar had seven kills and four aces, Regan McBeth also contributed seven kills and Ava Brown added four kills as South Allegheny (16-4, 12-2) swept East Allegheny (2-17, 2-12) in Section 2-2A play.

Boys soccer

California 2, Chartiers-Houston 0 – The Trojans (2-8) won a Class A preliminary round matchup over the Bucs (1-16) and will meet top-seeded Bentworth in Saturday’s first round.

Field hockey

Latrobe 1, Upper St. Clair 0 – In a winner-take-all match in Class 2A, Mia Stynchula scored the only goal on an assist from Macy Schultz as Latrobe (3-10, 2-10) blanked Upper St. Clair (1-12-2, 1-10-1) to earn a playoff berth. McKenna Brackney preserved the shutout for the Wildcats.

Girls tennis

Shady Side Academy 5, Fox Chapel 0 – Sophomore WPIAL champ Meriwether McCargo and freshmen Brooke Henderson and Alexandra Merkel won singles matches as Shady Side Academy took the third-place match in the WPIAL Class 3A tournament to earn a berth in the state playoffs. Taylor Shanefelter and Amy Jin won in three sets and Gabrielle Matzus and Elena Rubinov in straight sets in doubles for the Bulldogs.

Hockey

Elizabeth Forward 4, Central Valley 3 – Cam Thompson scored three goals in the final 4:15 of the game, including the winner with 27 seconds to go, to lead Elizabeth Forward (2-1-1) to a comeback win in Division 2. Blake Hvozdik also scored and Patrick Malanda had three assists for EF. Mikey Crea, Treyton Palocsik and Logan Sullivan scored for Central Valley (0-2).

Fox Chapel 7, Armstrong 3 – Hayden Ferra and Dominic Casile each had two goals and an assist and Tucker Cullen added a goal and two assists to power Fox Chapel (2-0) to a Class 2A win. Jason Rullo had a goal and two assists and Jake Graff chipped in a goal and an assist for Armstrong (1-2).

Latrobe 5, Baldwin 1 – Joey Crimboli recorded a hat trick while Dylan Morris and Cam Mikolsky each added a goal to lead Latrobe (2-1) to a Class 2A win against Baldwin (0-2-1). Logan Cramer buried the only goal for Baldwin.

McDowell 4, Beaver 1 – Harrison Parra scored twice and Alec Coon and Nathan Hanel each added a goal for McDowell (1-3) in a Class A win. Zack Masters scored for Beaver (0-2-1).

North Allegheny 2, Central Catholic 1 (OT) – Joey Mitchell scored the game winner 13 seconds into overtime to lift North Allegheny (1-2-1) to a Class 3A win. Gianna Lochiatto also scored for NA. Judah Brophy scored for Central Catholic (1-2-2).

Seneca Valley 3, Peters Township 2 (OT) – Carter Hoehn scored the overtime winner, Marshall Hewitt had a goal and an assist and Ethan Riffe also scored for Seneca Valley (3-0) in a Class 3A win. Thomas Dowden and Jacob Hlawati each had a goal and an assist for Peters Township (1-1-1).

Shaler 6, Greensburg Salem 3 – Lucca Laquatra had two goals and an assist and Chase Irwin added a goal and two assists for Shaler (4-0) in a Class A win. Dylan Marsden, Bradyn Whiteman and Blake Whiteman also scored for Shaler. Jeremiah Faulk, Luke Dieter and Jake Fink had goals for Greensburg Salem (0-2).

Thomas Jefferson 4, Bethel Park 1 – Lucas Blose had two goals and an assist and Derek Schliebner and Liam Mahoney each chipped in a goal and an assist for Thomas Jefferson (1-1) in a Class 3A win. Ian Majernik scored for Bethel Park (1-2).

Upper St. Clair 5, Pine-Richland 2 – Ian Tobin had two goals and Ryan Buonomo, Nico Galardini and Drew Lisak also scored to lead Upper St. Clair (1-1-1) to a Class 3A win. Josh Lanyard scored twice for Pine-Richland (1-2).

Wheeling Central Catholic 7, Westmont Hilltop 1 – Logan Pielech scored four goals to power Wheeling Central Catholic (2-1) to a Class A win. Brady Kerr, Gary Hatfield and Bode Burge also scored for Wheeling CC. Ethan Downey scored for Westmont Hilltop (0-2).

Wheeling Park 4, Moon 1 – Landon Szazynski, Cooper Abraham, Sam Kiger and Luke Simonetti each deposited a shot in the net to lead Wheeling Park (1-1) to a Class A win over Moon (2-1). Landon Watson scored for the Tigers.
