High school roundup for Oct. 2, 2018: No. 3 Moon boys blank Beaver

Nick Magnelli scored off an assist from Brian Fuentes as No. 3 Moon edged Beaver, 1-0, in a Section 2-3A boys soccer game Tuesday night.
Like many soccer games throughout Western Pennsylvania, the game was called after a 45-minute lightning delay.
The Tigers improved to 11-2-1 overall and 7-2-1 in section play.
Thomas Jefferson 4, Gateway 0 — AJ Meshanko scored twice to help Thomas Jefferson (8-3-1, 7-2-1) capture a Section 4-3A victory. The game was called with 26 minutes remaining because of inclement weather.
Charleroi 8, Brownsville 2 — Leo Iacovangelo and Cullen Woytovich each scored twice for No. 4 Charleroi (11-0, 9-0) in a Section 3-2A win.
OLSH 2, Quigley Catholic 1 — In Section 1-A, Conor Stull scored from 30 yards away to seal a victory for OLSH (8-3-1, 6-2-1).
Southmoreland 2, Waynesburg 1 — Kullen McCoy and Brett Glowacki scored to lead Southmoreland to a Section 3-2A win.
Glowacki and Max Gomez had assists. Dalton Woods scored for Waynesburg.
The Scotties (6-6, 6-3) trail second-place Waynesburg (10-5, 7-3) by a game in the Section 3 standings.
Connellsville 6, Latrobe 0 — Garrett Brighton scored twice to lead Connellsville (10-3, 7-3) past Latrobe (6-6, 6-5) in a Section 3-4A game.
Gaven Wood, Luke Peperak, Ethan Price and Seth Traynor also scored for the Falcons.
Norwin 4, Hempfield 0 — Carter Breen scored twice, and Zach Ullum and Jake Nebinski added goals for No. 4 Norwin (10-1-1, 8-0-1), which blanked Hempfield (3-9, 3-8) in a Section 3-4A game.
Mt. Pleasant 3, Shady Side Acad. 1 — Lucas Toohey, Sam Napper and Brad Tait scored as Mt. Pleasant (9-3, 7-2) won in Section 2-2A.
The game was called with 13:38 left because of lightning.
Monessen 2, Chartiers-Houston 0 — Cameron Frolo scored twice to help Monessen (6-2-2, 5-2-1) win a Section 4-A game that was called at halftime because of lightning.
Girls volleyball
Leechburg 3, Springdale 0 — Brenna Callahan tallied 15 kills and two aces and Maddie Ancosky added six kills and five digs as Leechburg rolled past Section 3-A rival Springdale. Gracie Reinke notched five kills, two blocks and nine digs, Ashley Grine added six kills, Sami Bigenho tallied 17 assists and McKenna Pierce finished with 10 assists for Leechburg (7-3, 6-3).
Deer Lakes 3, Valley 0 — Renee Robson came through with 19 service points and 26 assists to lead Deer Lakes past Section 5-AA rival Valley. Lydia Fink tallied 10 kills and Kaylee Sciubba added nine kills and 13 service points for Deer Lakes (5-5, 5-3).
Freeport 3, Derry 0 — Ally DeJidas had nine kills and 12 service points to help Class AA No. 1 Freeport (9-1, 8-0) sweep Derry (6-2) in a Section 5-AA match. Sarah Hettich had seven kills and six blocks for the Yellowjackets, and Lauren Lampus added five kills and eight service points.
Knoch 3, Hampton 0 — Kennedy Christy recorded 12 kills and 11 service points for Class AAA No. 1 Knoch (11-0, 9-0) in a Section 4 win over Hampton. Hannah Rowe had 10 kills.
Hockey
Connellsville 7, Knoch 1 — Ryan Brown scored four times to help Connellsville (1-0) spoil Knoch’s return to PIHL hockey in a Division II game. Camden Jackson had the lone goal for the Knights (0-1).
