High school roundup for Oct. 2, 2025: Shaler wins in OT to end 16-year playoff drought

Alex Gaetano scored the overtime winner to lift Shaler to a 1-0 victory over Indiana (5-7-1, 2-5-1) in Section 1-3A boys soccer Thursday night. The win sends the Titans (10-3, 8-2) to the playoffs for the first time in 16 years.

Aquinas Academy 4, Brentwood 0 – Marco Anselmino scored two goals and Lorenzo Anselmino and Mark Roundring added a goal apiece to lead Aquinas Academy (9-3, 7-1) to a Section 3-A win over Brentwood (6-6-1, 3-4-1).

Beaver 12, Ellwood City 0 – Anthony Furda scored four goals and Shane Ebbitt added three as Beaver (11-2, 11-2) beat Ellwood City (0-13, 0-11) to clinch a playoff berth in Section 2-2A. Seth Kullen and Hudson Vann each scored two goals and Ryan Perez scored one.

Beaver County Christian 1, Freedom 0 – Zach Stephens scored the winning goal with an assist from Kian Wilsey and Mike Lanigan earned the shutout, leading Beaver County Christian (12-1, 7-1) to a Section 1-A win. Troy Reynolds made 10 saves for Freedom (3-8-1, 2-5-1).

Bentworth 19, California 0 – Ryan Moessner recorded a hat trick while Billy Moyer and Garrett Allen each scored twice as Bentworth (13-0, 7-0) thumped California (0-6, 0-5) in Section 2-A. Twelve other Bearcats scored a goal as the win clinched at least a share of the section title for Bentworth.

Bethel Park 10, Albert Gallatin 0 – Xavier Jackson racked up four goals and four assists and Youssef Benrabia had three goals and an assist to lead Bethel Park (10-1-2, 10-0-1) past Albert Gallatin (1-13, 0-11) in Section 2-3A. Aaden McClelland, Aiden Good and Jason Koerbel also scored and Luke Rubican, Jacob Coffield and Kolton Battung combined on the shutout.

Charleroi 7, Brownsville 0 – Dylan Klinger racked up four goals and two assists, Otis McIntyre had two goals and two assists and Blake Pendo added a goal and an assist as Charleroi (11-2, 10-0) beat Brownsville (3-12, 1-10) in Section 4-2A.

Chartiers-Houston 3, Greensburg Central Catholic 1 – Ashton Kennedy scored a pair of goals and Bryson Boskovich added another as Chartiers-Houston (7-6, 3-4) beat Greensburg Central Catholic (1-8, 1-5) in Section 2-A. Grant Brewer scored for the Centurions.

Deer Lakes 12, Burrell 0 – Collin Rodgers had a hat trick and added an assist and Artemey Parshyn collected two goals and three assists to lead Deer Lakes (11-3-1, 9-1-1) past Burrell (4-11, 4-7) in Section 1-2A. Cuyler Crim had two goals and an assist, Peyton Kushon also scored twice, Jacob Orseno finished with a goal and an assist and Wesley Boyle recorded the shutout for the Lancers.

Eden Christian 2, Neshannock 0 – Jason Rice and Spencer Rigby scored to boost Eden Christian (7-6, 5-3) past Neshannock (11-4-1, 3-4-1) in Section 1-A.

Elizabeth Forward 8, East Allegheny 0 – Aidan Davis buried four goals to pace Elizabeth Forward (9-5, 8-3) in a Section 3-2A victory against East Allegheny (1-10, 1-10). Luca Valerio, Levi George, Tucker Ritchie-McCune and Warren Woleslagle each tacked on a goal for the Warriors.

Freeport 8, Valley 0 – Spencer Valasek recorded a hat trick and Ryan Sutara tallied a pair of goals to lead Freeport (9-5-1, 5-5-1) to a Section 1-2A win over Valley (0-12-1, 0-10-1). Xavier Dewitt, Eli Hassler and Dante Treglia each added a goal for the Yellowjackets.

Jeannette 7, St. Joseph 0 – McAlister Steele led the way with four goals and Carter Mallich, Karter Clary and Zion Harper added a goal apiece for Jeannette (4-9, 1-7) in a Section 4-A win over St. Joseph (1-8, 1-7).

Mt. Pleasant 1, Greensburg Salem 0 – Grant Zahrobsky scored off a feed from Gavin Rummel to lift Mt. Pleasant (11-4, 10-1) past Greensburg Salem (4-11, 3-8) in Section 4-2A. Grayson Gardner kept a clean sheet in net for the Vikings.

North Allegheny 1 , Butler 0 (OT) – Francis Randiga scored the overtime winner, lifting North Allegheny (9-3-2, 5-2-1) past Butler (7-7, 2-6) in Section 3-4A. It was the third straight OT win for the Tigers.

Norwin 4, Gateway 0 – Caleb Maddock had two goals, Logan Plichta and Colin Pishko also scored and Reed Hoyle made 10 saves to complete the shutout as Norwin (7-5-2, 6-1-1) blanked Gateway (4-9, 2-6) in Section 1-4A.

OLSH 6, Serra Catholic 0 – Owen Minzer had a hat trick, Brady Hernandez followed with two goals and Chad Minton added one to lead OLSH (11-0, 7-0) in a Section 3-A win over Serra Catholic (4-9, 2-6).

Penn-Trafford 4, West Mifflin 1 – Ryan Geyer had two goals and Cam King and Yuriy Bidochko also scored for Penn-Trafford (8-5, 5-3) in a playoff-clinching Section 3-3A win over West Mifflin (2-10-1, 1-6).

Peters Township 10, Connellsville 2 – Anthony Maiello scored twice to pace Peters Township (10-0-1, 7-0-1) in a Section 2-4A win over Connellsville (2-12-1, 0-8). Charlie Lulich, Keedan Kelly, Colin Froelich, Cam Glass, Colby Zimmer, Preston Oakes, Lucas Martin and Ryder Baker each notched a goal for the Indians.

Plum 3, Penn Hills 0 – Austin Kolankowski and Joaquin Santiago scored, Andy Strasser had an assist and Chase Eber and Jack Majcher combined on the shutout as Plum (12-2-1, 7-0-1) defeated Penn Hills (2-10-1, 1-7) in Section 1-4A.

Ringgold 10, McKeesport 0 – Izaiah Wilson had a hat trick and Ryan McCloskey added two goals for Ringgold (7-6, 6-5) in a Section 2-3A win over McKeesport (1-12, 1-10). Cole Scheponik, Kody Pusateri, Nate Alvarez, Donovan Fortuna and Alex Seger also scored for the Rams.

Seneca Valley 3, Pine-Richland 1 – Ben Baronner, Jake Phillips and Owen Eastgate scored as Seneca Valley (11-2, 6-2) overcame an early deficit to beat Pine-Richland (4-9-1, 1-7) in Section 3-4A.

Seton LaSalle 2, McGuffey 1 (OT) – Mason Foster scored the golden goal in the second overtime to lift Seton LaSalle (13-2, 10-1) to a Section 3-2A win over McGuffey (9-5, 6-5). Larry Brown also scored for the Rebels.

Southmoreland 1, Waynesburg 0 – Hunter Ryan buried the only goal of the match to lead Southmoreland (7-8, 6-5) to a Section 4-2A win against Waynesburg (4-7-1, 4-6-1).

Springdale 3, Riverview 1 – Brennan Mattie, Noah Auge and Mason Mattie scored to lead Springdale to a 3-1 victory over Riverview (5-7-1, 2-4-1) in Section 4-A boys soccer Thursday night. Nathan DiLeo and Levi Bennett each had an assist for the Dynamos (9-3, 7-1).

Thomas Jefferson 2, South Fayette 0 – Tyler Surrena and Evan Olson scored and Sam Wessel preserved the shutout as Thomas Jefferson (12-1-1, 9-1-1) clinched a playoff spot with a Section 2-3A win over South Fayette (3-10, 3-8).

Trinity 2, Laurel Highlands 1 – Evan Slagle scored on an assist from Brady Anderson and John Garcia added an unassisted goal as Trinity (9-4, 9-2) slipped by Laurel Highlands (9-6, 5-6) in Section 2-3A to secure a playoff spot.

Yough 6, Derry 0 – Isaac Pacacha scored two goals and Tadghan Small, Brycen Watkins, Dyllan Bennett-Fincick and Jayden Goulding added a goal apiece for Yough (9-3, 8-2) in a Section 4-2A win over Derry (1-11-1, 0-10-1).

Girls soccer

Belle Vernon 3, Yough 0 – Courtney Martin, Kelsey Roskovich and Aki Watson scored to lead Belle Vernon (10-4-1) to a nonsection win over Yough (6-8).

Beth-Center 3, Albert Gallatin 1 – Kendall Welsh, Alexia Fischer and Alexa Bemis scored to help Beth-Center (5-7) to a nonsection win over Albert Gallatin (2-10).

East Allegheny 3, Brashear 1 – Kelsey Ace scored twice and Sydney Nellis added a goal to lead East Allegheny (1-10) to a nonsection win over Brashear.

McKeesport 4, Highlands 2 – Ella DellaPina had two goals and Dannah Sebelia and Eleanor Homer also scored to lead McKeesport (5-7) to a nonsection win. Ella Prager and Natalie Dickerson scored for Highlands (3-7).

Serra Catholic 6, Charleroi 0 – Lexie Genes scored a pair of goals while Milena Pziviak, Ally Stabryla, Giana Tozzi and Bella Dumbroski each tacked on a goal apiece as Serra Catholic (6-6) blanked Charleroi (1-12) in nonsection play.

Girls volleyball

Bentworth 3, Washington 1 – Sofia Gaussa had 23 digs and 10 kills and Addison Pysh added 15 kills while Olivia Telegraphis produced 43 digs and Zoie McDonald had 32 assists as Bentworth (6-8, 3-7) triumphed over Washington (4-6, 4-6) in Section 3-2A.

Canon-McMillan 3, Mt. Lebanon 0 – Natalie Carr had 12 kills and 15 digs and Journee Scott added 12 kills and four blocks to power Canon-McMillan (8-4, 4-2) past Mt. Lebanon (2-8, 1-5) in Section 1-4A. Carsen Brown dished out 18 assists, Katie Wing added 13 assists and Amanda Ciolli had 13 digs and three aces for the Big Macs.

Hempfield 3, Norwin 0 – Lauren Howard produced eight kills and six aces, Claire Mitchell added eight kills and Preslee Horchak handed out 30 assists as Hempfield (8-3, 5-1) swept Norwin (5-8, 3-3) in three sets for a Section 3-4A win.

Jefferson-Morgan 3, Carmichaels 1 – Kelsey Vessels had 14 digs and 11 kills, Emilee Bazzoli added 20 digs and Lucca Jellots had 10 digs as Jefferson-Morgan (4-7, 2-4) beat Carmichaels (4-10, 3-3) in Section 3-A. Mallory McManis dished out 13 assists for the Rockets.

Leechburg 3, Riverview 0 – Hayven Lookabaugh had seven kills and Addie Zanotto added five kills and four aces to lead Leechburg (3-9, 2-4) past Riverview (0-11, 0-5) in Section 1-A. Elsa Zalenski had two kills and four aces and Bella Foley also served up four aces for the Blue Devils.

Ligonier Valley 3, Neighborhood Academy 0 – Marlee Miller led with 10 kills, 11 assists and three aces and Rylee Monticue added nine kills, nine assists and three aces for Ligonier Valley (5-8, 2-4) in a Section 5-2A win over Neighborhood Academy (0-3, 0-3).

Mohawk 3, Ellwood City 0 – Reagan Magno had nine kills, four blocks and nine digs to lead Mohawk (9-3, 6-2) past Ellwood City (2-10, 1-8) in Section 4-2A. Marli McBride had 13 digs and six kills, Riley Shaffer finished with 11 assists, three kills and three aces, Emme Druschel recorded six kills, three blocks and six digs, and Sara Hampson had five kills and eight digs for the Warriors.

Neshannock 3, Beaver Falls 0 – Kate Pauline had 11 digs and seven aces, Marika Measel added nine digs and eight kills and Rian Owens had 30 assists and eight digs as Neshannock (10-2, 8-1) beat Beaver Falls (1-11, 0-8) in Section 4-2A.

South Allegheny 3, Steel Valley 0 – Cadence McBride had three kills and two blocks, running her career total to 39 blocks to break the school record of 37 held by Bri Hayes, as South Allegheny (13-3, 9-2) swept Steel Valley (2-9, 2-8) in Section 2-2A. Regan McBeth had 11 kills and three aces and Ally Chizmar added seven kills and two aces for the Gladiators.

Field hockey

Pine-Richland 11, Hempfield 0 – Leyton Carlson and Claire Mill each recorded a hat trick to lead Pine-Richland (11-3, 9-0) to a victory over Hempfield (2-9, 1-8) in Class 3A.

Hockey

Armstrong 8, Baldwin 0 – Jason Rullo and Evan Heilman each had two goals and two assists and Kohlt Eshbaugh made 16 saves to lead Armstrong (2-0) past Baldwin (0-1) in Class 2A. Jonas Miller scored twice and Josh Rullo finished with a goal and three assists.

Burrell 6, Deer Lakes 0 – Dom Rosa had a goal and an assist and Jonah Endlich made 13 saves to earn the shutout as Burrell (2-0) picked up a Division 2 win. Brayden Snyder, Alex Hatajik, Colton Boda, Asher Ross and Ryan Burkett also scored for Burrell. Keaton Minnick made 41 saves for Deer Lakes (1-1).

Central Catholic 3, Upper St. Clair 2 (OT) – Santino Strobel buried the game winner in overtime to lift Central Catholic (1-0) past Upper St. Clair (0-0-1) in Class 3A. Aaron Daley scored two goals for Central Catholic. Nico Galardini had both goals for USC.

Connellsville 4, Central Valley 2 – Connor Basinger scored a hat trick and Logan Hause chipped in a goal as Connellsville (1-0) defeated Central Valley (0-1) in Division 2. Caleb McQuaid and Spencer McGuire each scored for Central Valley.

Latrobe 4, Cathedral Prep 0 – Preston Miller scored a natural hat trick and Garek McMahen tallied a goal to power Latrobe (1-0) to a Class 2A victory over Cathedral Prep (0-1). Reese Myers stopped 21 shots for the shutout.

Morgantown 7, Ringgold 4 – Branden Custer had a hat trick and Cooper Cox collected two goal and two assists to lead Morgantown (1-0) to a Division 2 win. Landon Vaccaro had two goals and an assist and Benito Pesi added a goal and an assist for Ringgold (0-1).

Plum 7, Greensburg Salem 2 – AJ Leah had a goal and two assists to lead Plum (1-0) to a Class A win. Alex Amen, Colby Bartos, Josh Lewis, Trey Harchick, Matthew Amen and Max Keller also scored for Plum. Jeremiah Faulk and Jake Fink had goals for Greensburg Salem (0-1).

Quaker Valley 5, Montour 0 – Jace Vasbinder scored twice and Ian Lorang made 27 saves to lead Quaker Valley (2-0) to the shutout win over Montour (0-1) in Class A. Ben McHenry and Matthias Lezama each had a goal and an assist and Max Modrovich also scored.

Seneca Valley 8, Pine-Richland 1 – Cooper Hoehn had a hat trick, Braden Morin collected a goal and three assists and Jacob Gilbert had a goal and two assists to lead Seneca Valley (1-0) to a Class 3A win. Noah Taggert scored for Pine-Richland (0-1).

South Fayette 6, Thomas Jefferson 4 – Nathaniel Keller completed his hat trick with the go-ahead goal with three minutes left to lead South Fayette (2-0) to a Class 3A win. Mikhail Lobanov had a goal and three assists, Hudson Vennum had a goal and an assist and Johnny Alex scored the tying goal for South Fayette. Michael Burns had two goals and an assist and Carter Artman and Cam Lorenzi also scored for Thomas Jefferson (1-1).
