High school roundup for Oct. 21, 2023: Bentworth nets OT winner as boys soccer playoffs begin

John Scott scored the overtime winner, assisted by Ryan Moessner, to lead No. 7 Bentworth to a 2-1 victory over No. 10 OLSH (10-6-2) in a WPIAL boys soccer Class A first-round match Saturday afternoon.

Andrew Vipperman also scored for the Bearcats (15-2), assisted by Scott. Bentworth will face No. 2 Sewickley Academy in Wednesday’s quarterfinals.

Charleroi 1, Beaver County Christian 0 – Dylan Klinger scored a second-half goal off of an assist from Landon Barcus as No. 1 Charleroi (17-0) avoided the upset by defeating No. 16 Beaver County Christian (6-9-1). Nate Mazon recorded four saves to pick up the shutout. Charleroi will play Eden Christian in Wednesday’s quarterfinals.

Eden Christian 2, Winchester Thurston 1 – There will be a new WPIAL champion in Class A as ninth-seeded Eden Christian (13-3-2) got past defending champ Winchester Thurston (10-4-2), the eighth seed, in a Class A first-round match. Eden Christian will meet No. 1 Charleroi in the quarterfinals Wednesday.

Seton LaSalle 6, Beth-Center 0 – Jack Billick scored twice and Nick Cherry preserved the shutout as No. 4 Seton LaSalle (14-2-1) took care of No. 13 Beth-Center (11-8) in the Class A first round. Sal Pasquale, Humberto Lopez, Elliott Brennan and Tommy Kovalcik also scored for the Rebels, who will take on No. 5 Springdale in Wednesday’s quarterfinals.

Sewickley Academy 2, Bishop Canevin 1 – The second-seeded Panthers (13-2-1) survived an upset scare and got past No. 15 Bishop Canevin (5-11) in a Class A first-round matchup. Sewickley Academy will take on No. 7 Bentworth in the quarterfinals Wednesday.

Springdale 3, Carlynton 1 – Billy Lawrence and Nate Dubas connected three times, leading fifth-seeded Springdale (14-3) past No. 12 Carlynton (10-7-1) in a first-round match. Lawrence had two goals and an assist and Dubas had a goal and two assists for the Dynamos, who will meet No. 4 Seton LaSalle in the quarterfinals Wednesday.

Trinity Christian 1, Serra Catholic 0 – At Bethel Park, Sam Boyer’s first-half goal off a pass by Luke Kost gave No. 11 Trinity Christian (10-5) the first-round win over No. 6 Serra Catholic (12-5). Trinity Christian faces Burrell on Wednesday in the quarterfinals.

Class 3A

Franklin Regional 4, Mars 0 – Joey Bayne netted a pair of goals and Lorenzo Aguilera and Jovan Sankoorikal also scored as No. 11 Franklin Regional (11-7) knocked off No. 6 Mars (11-4-1) in a first-round match. The Panthers will meet No. 3 Moon in Wednesday’s quarterfinals.

Hampton 1, Trinity 0 (OT) – Coleman Docherty scored the overtime winner, assisted by Luke Fiscus, as No. 2 Hampton (15-2-1) avoided the first-round upset and defeated No. 15 Trinity (10-6-1). The Talbots will take on No. 7 Thomas Jefferson in the quarterfinals Wednesday.

Indiana 1, Bethel Park 0 (SO) – After both teams were held scoreless in regulation and overtime, Moath Alanazi, Tim Birch, Russell Crane, Tyler Hunter converted their penalties as No. 13 Indiana (6-11-1) upset No. 4 Bethel Park (15-3-1) in a shootout in a first-round match. Indiana outscored Bethel Park 4-1 in the shootout. Alex Bauer earned the shutout for Indiana, which will meet No. 5 Montour in Wednesday’s quarterfinals.

Montour 5, Gateway 0 – Andrew Prunier had a hat trick, Parker Brennan had a goal and two assists, and Anthony Orlandini also scored as No. 5 Montour (14-3) rolled past No. 12 Gateway (8-6-2) in a first-round match. The Spartans held the Gators to three shots on goal. Montour will meet No, 11 Indiana in the quarterfinals Wednesday.

Moon 4, Ringgold 0 – The third-seeded Tigers (15-3-1) rolled past No. 14 Ringgold (11-5-1) in a first-round matchup and will meet No. 11 Franklin Regional in Wednesday’s quarterfinals.

Plum 5, Chartiers Valley 1 – Brady French had two goals as No. 1 Plum (18-1) defeated Chartiers Valley (7-10) in the first round of the playoffs. Plum advances to face South Fayette in Wednesday’s quarterfinals. Tristin Ralph had a goal and an assist, Travis Kodman and Eli Westchak also scored, and Noah Smith had two assists for the Mustangs.

Thomas Jefferson 1, North Catholic 0 (OT) – In the first round of the Class 3A playoffs, Ray Schrello scored in overtime as No. 7 Thomas Jefferson (16-2-1) shut out No. 10 North Catholic (9-8). Jake Shoemaker assisted on the lone goal while Sam Wessel recorded the clean sheet. Thomas Jefferson faces Hampton in the quarterfinals on Wednesday.
