High school roundup for Oct. 21, 2024: Burrell boys knock off No. 4 Quaker Valley in PK shootout

Ben Doland made 16 saves to lead No. 13 Burrell to a 1-0 victory over No. 4 Quaker Valley (14-4-1) in a penalty kick shootout in the first round of the WPIAL Class 2A boys soccer playoffs Monday night. The Bucs (9-9) will meet No. 12 Seton LaSalle, an upset winner over No. 5 Charleroi, in the quarterfinals Thursday. Burrell won the shootout, 5-3.
Central Valley 4, Elizabeth Forward 2 – Cam DeVincentis scored twice to lead No. 9 Central Valley (15-4) to a Class 2A first-round win. Owen Shearer had a goal and an assist, Jackson Super also scored and Jack Dobronz handed out two assists for Central Valley, which will face No. 1 South Park in the quarterfinals Thursday. Luca Valerio and Luke Holdren scored for No. 8 Elizabeth Forward (12-6-1).
North Catholic 6, Southmoreland 0 – The sixth-seeded Trojans (15-4) blanked the No. 11 Scotties (11-8) and will meet No. 3 Deer Lakes in the quarterfinals Thursday.
Seton LaSalle 3, Charleroi 2 – Ty Kovalcik, Gavin McMahon and Darius Norevicus scored a goal apiece to lead No. 12 Seton LaSalle (13-4) past No. 5 Charleroi (14-2) in a Class 2A first-round win. Otis McIntyre and Blake Pendo scored for the Cougars. The Rebels will face No. 13 Burrell in Thursday’s quarterfinals.
Shady Side Academy 2, Mt. Pleasant 0 – Dane Thomas and Paul Benec scored and Liam Cowan recorded the shutout to lead No. 10 Shady Side Academy (12-4-1) to a Class 2A first-round win over No. 7 Mt. Pleasant (13-6). The Bulldogs will take on the winner of Tuesday’s game between Avonworth and McGuffey in Thursday’s quarterfinals.
South Park 6, Waynesburg 0 – Dawson Battista had a pair of goals and Daniel Battista, Ryan Wesolowski, Rocco Stock and Ethan Aultz also scored to lead No. 1 South Park (17-1-1) past No. 16 Waynesburg (7-8-1) in the Class 2A first round. Nick Latona had a pair of assists for the Eagles, who will meet No. 9 Central Valley in Thursday’s quarterfinals.
Girls soccer
Bethel Park 3, Thomas Jefferson 2 – Grace Ferency scored her second goal of the game in the second overtime to lift No. 10 Bethel Park (10-6-3) to a Class 3A first-round win. Emma Impellicceiri also scored for the Black Hawks, who will meet No. 2 South Fayette in Thursday’s quarterfinals. Sami Maglicco scored twice for No. 7 Thomas Jefferson (10-6-1).
Canon-McMillan 11, Hempfield 0 – Sarah Coffman, Ella Shields and Rachel Tomley scored two goals apiece to lead No. 6 Canon-McMillan (12-3-1) past No. 11 Hempfield (5-14) in the Class 4A first round. Abigail Ault, Sydney Hares, Gwendolyn Compeggie, Kiara Pugh and Dylan Sadler also scored for the Big Macs, who will face No. 3 Penn-Trafford in Thursday’s quarterfinals.
Fox Chapel 8, Indiana 0 – Emily McKee led No. 1 Fox Chapel (16-2-1) with three goals and two assists in a Class 3A first-round win over No. 16 Indiana (5-10-2). Alyssa Quackenbush added three goals for the Foxes, who will face No. 8 Montour in Thursday’s quarterfinals.
Mars 3, Oakland Catholic 2 – Freshman Jade Breese scored a hat trick to lift No. 6 Mars (16-2) past No. 11 Oakland Catholic (8-8) in a Class 3A first-round matchup. The Fightin’ Planets will meet No. 3 West Allegheny in the quarterfinals Thursday.
Montour 3, Franklin Regional 2 (OT) – Irelynn Hobbs scored in the final minute of the first overtime to lead No. 8 Montour (12-5-2) past No. 9 Franklin Regional (12-6) in the Class 3A first round. Kira Hobbs scored twice in regulation for the Spartans, who will meet No. 1 Fox Chapel in the quarterfinals Thursday. Abby Paterline scored the tying goal with less than five minutes left in regulation and Natalie Keough also scored for the Panthers.
Moon 4, Hampton 0 – Riley Lafayette, Lauren Muhanna, Anna Palm and Lilia Snyder scored a goal apiece to lead No. 5 Moon (13-3) to a Class 3A first round win over No. 12 Hampton (12-5-1). The Tigers will face No. 4 Plum in the quarterfinals Thursday.
South Fayette 4, Kiski Area 0 – Gabby Beinecke and Quinn Miller scored in the first half and Abbey Spalla and Mia Patel added second-half goals as No. 2 South Fayette (15-3) blanked No. 15 Kiski Area (6-10-1) in the Class 3A first round. Mia Deramo had three assists for the Lions, who will face No. 10 Bethel Park in the quarterfinals Thursday.
Upper St. Clair 3, Butler 1 – Anelise Castrodale, Chloe Bird and Meredith Huzjak each scored for No. 7 Upper St. Clair (10-5-2) in a Class 4A first-round win over No. 10 Butler (9-9). Natalie Disora had an assist for the Panthers, who will face No. 2 South Fayette in Thursday’s quarterfinals.
West Allegheny 3, Laurel Highlands 0 – Maddy Pons, Ella Smith and Kylie Holtz scored a goal apiece to lead No. 3 West Allegheny (14-4-1) to a Class 3A first round win over No. 14 Laurel Highlands (7-8). Chloe Hart had two assists for the Indians, who will meet No. 6 Mars in Thursday’s quarterfinals.
Girls volleyball
Class 3A – Leah Myers had 15 kills and seven digs to lead No. 18 Albert Gallatin (9-8) to a five-set preliminary round win over No. 15 Derry (7-9) by scores of 19-25, 25-23, 25-22, 17-25 and 15-13. Mya Glisan had 12 kills, Mia Myers dished out 32 assists and Mitchell Turner had six kills and four blocks for the Colonials.
In the other Class 3A preliminary round match, No. 16 Gateway (9-5) topped No. 17 Central Valley (7-10) in five sets by scores of 25-17, 22-25, 25-16, 21-25, 15-11.
Class 2A – No. 13 Yough (13-8) got past No. 20 Ligonier Valley (9-9) in a five-set preliminary round match, 18-25, 25-23, 18-25, 25-18, 15-6. Lacy Sosko had 14 kills and Rylee Monticue added 10 kills and 18 assists for the Rams.
The other five preliminary matches were three-set sweeps. No. 11 Avonowrth (10-9) beat No. 22 Mohawk (10-9), No. 14 McGuffey (12-5) defeated No. 19 Bentworth (8-11), No. 12 Seton LaSalle (14-7) topped No. 21 Brownsville (8-12), No. 18 OLSH (11-6) got past No. 15 Laurel (11-8) and No. 16 Keystone Oaks (10-8) swept No. 17 Shenango (7-8).
Hockey
Burrell 11, Sewickley Academy 0 – Mike Morazczyk had a hat trick and Brayden Snyder, Mike Ulyas and Dom Rosa each added a goal and two assists for Burrell (4-0) in a Division 2 win over Sewickley Academy (0-4).
Butler 4, Wheeling Park 3 (SO) – Jase Renwick scored the tying goal in the third period and Anthony Trombatt and Brayden Hardsock each had a goal and an assist for Butler (1-2-1) in a Class A shootout win. Landon Szazynski and Brody Groome scored for Wheeling Park (1-1-1).
Chartiers Valley 3, Plum 1 – Noah Callendar, Ryan Kumpf and Tyler Held scored to lead Chartiers Valley (5-0) to a Class A win. Alex Ledonne scored and Landon Gribbin-Horner made 45 saves for Plum (0-4).
Deer Lakes 5, Knoch 2 – Blake Toback had two goals and an assist, Ryan Grunden also scored twice and Mason Cervone added a goal to power Deer Lakes (2-2) to a Division 2 win. Brady Linamen and Nick Olshanski scored for Knoch (0-1-1).
Fox Chapel 7, Norwin 0 – Tucker Cullen and Hayden Ferra each had two goals and an assist and Dominic Casile had a goal and three assists to lead Fox Chapel (3-0) to a Class 2A win over Norwin (0-3).
Morgantown 12, Bishop Canevin 1 – Jacob Hollander had a goal and eight assists to lead Morgantown (3-1) to a Division 2 win. John Dibartolomeo and Cooper Cox each had three goals and an assist. Brian Kalanish scored for Bishop Canevin (1-1).
Neshannock 3, Wilmington 2 – Brady Liguore, Sam Mezzanotte and Will Kinchloe scored and Kent Jones had two assists for Neshannock (2-1) in a Division 2 win. Tye Tomak scored both goals for Wilmington (0-1).
North Catholic 6, Richland 2 – Lukas Hixon scored two goals and Beckett Dunn had a goal and two assists to lead North Catholic (3-1) past Richland (0-3) in a Class A win. Anthony Neely, Bryce Radeke and Evan Stanton also had a goal and assist apiece for North Catholic.
North Hills 5, Hampton 3 – Chad Rankin scored two goals and Bradley Shafer, Domenic Rennebeck and Tobias Kiger added a goal apiece to lead North Hills (1-3) past Hampton (1-2-1) in a Class A win.
Penn-Trafford 6, Bishop McCort 0 – Brock Bienemann scored twice and Tyler Funk made 21 saves to lead Penn-Trafford (3-0) past Bishop McCort (1-3) in Class 2A. Roman Catello and Kyler Doran each had a goal and an assist, TJ Ferguson and Lorvens Huber also scored and Rylan Kiste dished out three assists.
Quaker Valley 8, Meadville 0 – Ben McHenry and Matthias Lezama each had two goals and an assist and Jace Vasbinder collected a goal and three assists to lead Quaker Valley (4-0) past Meadville (0-3-1) in Class A. Max Modrovich had a goal and two assists, Colin York and Kieran Cain added a goal and an assist apiece and Ian Lorang made 16 saves.
Upper St. Clair 6, Franklin Regional 2 – Dylan Yealy had two goals and an assist and Nico Galardini added a goal and an assist to power Upper St. Clair (2-1-1) to a Class 3A win. Tyler Spears had a goal and an assist for Franklin Regional (3-1).
West Allegheny 7, Freeport 3 – Mason McGrath had two goals and an assist and John Wineland and Branden Switalski each scored twice to help West Allegheny (2-2) to a Class A win. Will Wolf had a goal and two assists and Liam McKivigan added a goal and an assist for Freeport (1-3).
