Mykola Desysenko and Nathan Katari scored to lead No. 4 North Allegheny to a 2-1 victory over No. 13 Central Catholic (5-12-1) in a WPIAL Class 4A first-round boys soccer match Tuesday. The Tigers (15-3-1) will take on No. 12 North Hills in the quarterfinals Saturday.
Avonworth 7, McGuffey 0 – Rowan Carmichael had a hat trick and Nathan Kline, Ben Hebor, Jimmy Quinn and Abdoulaye Barry also scored as No. 2 Avonworth (15-2-2) beat No. 15 McGuffey (9-9-1) in a Class 2A first-round game. Alex Rowe recorded the shutout for the Antelopes, who will face No. 10 Shady Side Academy in Thursday’s quarterfinals.
Canon-McMillan 6, Gateway 0 – Adam Kuchera had a hat trick and Gavin Patterson and Zach Warzinski also scored to lead No. 8 Canon-McMillan (12-4-2) past Mo. 9 Gateway (8-8) in a Class 4A first-round match. The Big Macs will face No. 1 Plum in the quarterfinals Saturday.
Seneca Valley 6, Mt. Lebanon 0 – Tyler Prex had a pair of goals and Sami Malkamaki, Zach White and Tyler Kuhar also scored for No. 7 Seneca Valley (13-5) in a Class 4A first-round win over No. 10 Mt. Lebanon (11-8). The Raiders will face No. 2 Peters Township in the quarterfinals Saturday.
Upper St. Clair 3, Pine-Richland 1 – Shawn Khurana had a pair of goals and Andrew Fulton also scored to power No. 6 Upper St. Clair (11-5-2) past No. 11 Pine-Richland (6-11-1) in the Class 4A first round. Jordan Crutchfield scored for the Rams. The Panthers will meet No. 3 Fox Chapel in the quarterfinals Friday.

Aquinas Academy 1, Eden Christian 0 (SO) – No. 13 Aquinas Academy (11-5) got past No. 4 Eden Christian (8-8-1) in a penalty kick shootout in the Class A first round and will meet No. 5 Sewickley Academy in Saturday’s quarterfinals.
Beaver 1, Shady Side Academy 0 – Sydney Chontos scored the winning goal and Cali Coups made eight saves in net as No. 3 Beaver (16-1) slipped past No. 14 Shady Side Academy (6-10-2) in the first round of the Class 2A playoffs. The Bobcats advanced to play No. 6 North Catholic in Saturday’s quarterfinals.
Bentworth 2, OLSH 1 (OT) – Bella Moyer scored the winning goal in the second overtime to lift No. 3 Bentworth (16-1) past No. 14 OLSH (6-8) in the Class A first round. Brielle Dillon scored the tying goal late in regulation for the Bearcats, who will meet No. 6 Winchester Thurston in the quarterfinals Saturday. Olivia Taylor scored for the Chargers.
Burrell 6, Keystone Oaks 0 – Miley Kariotis and Leah Waldsmith scored two goals each, Makiah Buchak added a goal and two assists and Maggie Nesko also scored as No. 9 Burrell (12-5-1) rolled past No. 8 Keystone Oaks (10-9) in the Class 2A first round. McKenna Miller handed out three assists and Dana Barczykowski preserved the shutout for the Bucs, who will take on No. 1 Mt. Pleasant in Saturday’s quarterfinals.
Freedom 2, Carlynton 1 (SO) – Ashlynn Wagner scored the tying goal in the second half and Farisa Roberts scored the decisive goal in the penalty kick shootout as No. 8 Freedom (9-6) got past No. 9 Carlynton (14-5) in the Class A first round. Riley Mauro scored the Cougars. The Bulldogs will meet No. 1 Springdale in the quarterfinals Saturday.
Freeport 8, Belle Vernon 0 – Elena Jenkins scored a hat trick and Camryn Woods added a goal and two assists to lead No. 5 Freeport (12-1-1) past No. 12 Belle Vernon (9-10) in a Class 2A first-round matchup. Peyton Los, Cece Schlegel, Brinley Sullivan and Nia DiSanti also scored, Tess Hanak had a pair of assists and Alyssa Alcorn recorded the shutout for the Yellowjackets, who will take on No. 4 South Park in Saturday’s quarterfinals.
North Catholic 3, Yough 0 – Mikaela Canzian, Lauren Mealie and Maria Pasquinelli scored and Marina Camino recorded the shutout as No. 6 North Catholic (14-3) defeated No. 11 Yough (12-7) in the Class 2A first round. North Catholic will face No. 3 Beaver in Saturday’s quarterfinals.
Quaker Valley 4, Southmoreland 0 – Ari Bosh had a pair of goals and Rowan Wallace and Lilly Baker also scored for No. 2 Quaker Valley (14-2-2) in a Class 2A first-round win over No. 15 Southmoreland (10-8). Ava Hajok preserved the shutout for the Quakers, who will meet No. 7 Deer Lakes in the quarterfinals Saturday.
Riverview 1, Waynesburg 0 – Hannah Hudack scored the winning goal with less than 12 minutes left in regulation to lead No. 10 Riverview (11-3) past No. 7 Waynesburg (14-3) in a Class A first-round match. Molly Morrissey set up the winning goal for Riverview, which will meet No. 2 Seton LaSalle in the quarterfinals Saturday.
Seton LaSalle 2, Ellis School 0 – Sydney Towers broke a scoreless tie early in the second half and Kendall DeMarino added an insurance goal as No. 2 Seton LaSalle (13-2-2) defeated No. 15 Ellis School (7-10) in the Class A first round. Regan Mazur recorded the shutout for the Rebels, who will meet No. 10 Riverview in Saturday’s quarterfinals.
Sewickley Academy 2, Riverside 0 – No. 5 Sewickley Academy (12-3-1) blanked No. 12 Riverside (6-6-3) and will face No. 13 Aquinas Academy in Saturday’s quarterfinals.
South Park 2, Central Valley 1 – Brooke Paylo and Emily Mihelcic had a goal apiece for No. 4 South Park (14-4-1) in a win over No. 13 Central Valley (7-8-2) in the first round of the Class 2A playoffs. The Eagles will face No. 5 Freeport in Saturday’s quarterfinals.
Springdale 7, Greensburg Central Catholic 1 – Briana Ross scored a hat trick and added an assist to lead top-seeded Springdale (14-1) to a Class A first-round win over Greensburg Central Catholic (5-8). Molly Hurley, Brooke Taliani, Carissa Walsh and Kaitlyn Shock also scored and Hailey Marchlewski dished out three assists for the Dynamos, who will meet No. 8 Freedom in Saturday’s quarterfinals.
Winchester Thurston 4, Chartiers-Houston 0 – Margherita Memoli had a hat trick to lead No. 6 Winchester Thurston (13-5) past No. 11 Chartiers-Houston (9-6) in the Class A first round. Emily Tea added a goal for the Bears, who advanced to play No. 3 Bentworth in Saturday’s quarterfinals.

Frazier 3, Rochester 0 – Grace Vaughn had 12 kills and Addison Schultz added eight kills and four blocks to lead No. 1 Frazier (13-3) past No. 16 Rochester (7-11) in the first round in Class A. Gracen Hartman doled out 24 assists and Addison Hiles had five digs for the Commodores, who will face No. 8 Serra Catholic in the quarterfinals Thursday.
St. Joseph 3, Union 0 – Veronica McCarthy had 12 kills, three aces and nine digs as No. 4 St. Joseph (16-3) recorded the first playoff victory in school history with a win over No. 13 Union (8-12) in the Class A first round. Elaina Moore had 11 kills and three aces and Jillian Bloch recorded 16 digs for the Spartans, who will meet No. 12 California, an upset winner over No. 5 Carmichaels, in the quarterfinals Thursday.

Cathedral Prep 5, Canon-McMillan 2 – Tucker Kinnear had a hat trick, Nick Pugne added a goal and an assist and Brady Sack also scored for Cathedral Prep (4-1) in a Class 2A win. Grayson Costa had a goal and an assist and Rocco Musto also scored for Canon-McMillan (2-2).
McDowell 8, Kiski 1 – Dylan Payne had a hat trick and added an assist and Wendall Natividad scored a pair of goals as McDowell (2-3) broke open a tie game with seven third-period goals in Class A. Dakota Wilson scored for Kiski (0-2).
Thomas Jefferson 3, Peters Township 2 – Derek Schliebner, Carter Merrell and Cam Lorenzi scored and Ronnie Porupsku made 31 saves to lead Thomas Jefferson (2-1) to a Class 3A win. Matthew Scouvart and Nicholas Caputo scored and Ethan Williams made 33 saves for Peters Township (1-2-1).
Girls tennis
Bethel Park 4, Fairview 1 – The first doubles team of Reagan and Delaney Gehrlein won a marathon match, 6-3, 5-7, 13-11, to spark Bethel Park (16-2) to a PIAA Class 3A first-round win. The Black Hawks, who will meet District 1 runner-up Council Rock South in Friday’s quarterfinals, swept singles behind straight sets wins from Cami Fisher, Mackenzie Smock and Julia Gobble.
Cathedral Prep 5, Hampton 0 – Paige Patsy defeated Grace Stitt in a close match at No. 1 singles, 7-5, 6-4, to lead District 10 champ Cathedral Prep (15-3) past Hampton (14-7) in the PIAA Class 2A first round.
Mt. Lebanon 5, Landisville Hempfield 0 – Singles players Jackie Tang, Michelle Yang and Elena Tatel and the doubles teams of Sylvie Eriksen/Sarah Stroh and Alejandra Garcia/Maggie Meehan all won in straight sets in the PIAA Class 3A first round. Mt. Lebanon (16-0) will meet District 2 champ Abington Heights in Friday’s quarterfinals.
North Catholic 4, Bedford 0 – Delaney Kelley and Evelyn Marche won singles matches and the doubles teams of Katie Hardy/Jessica Sinclair and Samantha Falcon/Macaria Stall also picked up straight-set wins to lead North Catholic (18-1) in the PIAA Class 2A first round. North Catholic will take on District 3 runner-up Lancaster Country Day in Friday’s quarterfinals.
Quaker Valley 5, Elk County Catholic 0 – Kirsten Close, Avery Allen and Jay Olawaiye swept the singles matches without dropping a game to lead Quaker Valley (14-2) past the District 9 champs in the PIAA Class 2A first round. The doubles teams of Jane Lenhard/Livia Jobbins and Parker Barnes/Hannah Stein also won in straight sets for the Quakers, who will face District 3 champ Berks Catholic in the quarterfinals Friday.
Shady Side Academy 4, Hollidaysburg 1 – Meriwether McCargo, Brooke Henderson and Alexandra Merkel won in straight sets in singles, as did the doubles team of Taylor Shanefelter/Amy Jin, as Shady Side Academy (14-2) picked up a Class 2A first-round win. The Bulldogs will meet District 1 champion Lower Merion in Friday’s quarterfinals.
