High school roundup for Oct. 23, 2024: Franklin Regional knocks off No. 2 seed Thomas Jefferson

Jovan Sankoorikal scored the go-ahead goal early in the second half to lead No. 7 Franklin Regional to a 2-1 upset victory over second-seeded Thomas Jefferson in the WPIAL Class 3A boys soccer quarterfinals Wednesday night.

Fabrizzio Costa scored a first-half goal, assisted by Sankoorikal, and Joey Bayne also registered an assist for the Panthers (13-3-2), who will face No. 6 Mars in Monday’s semifinals. Brayden Miller scored for the Jaguars (14-2-3).

Allderdice 5, Obama 0 – Aidan Thomas scored a pair of goals and Hari Arunachalam recorded the shutout as Allderdice (12-4-1) defeated Obama Academy (7-11) for the City League title. Luke Peña, Jacek Piekut and Daniel Mrsic also scored for the District 8 champs, who will host the District 9 champions at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Cupples Stadium.

Beaver County Christian 2, Greensburg Central Catholic 0 – Zachary Stephens and Robert McMahan scored first-half goals to lead No. 4 Beaver County Christian (15-3) past No. 12 Greensburg Central Catholic (7-8-1) in the Class A quarterfinals. Isaac House made 12 saves for the Centurions. McMahan and Rocco DeSarbo had assists for Beaver County Christian, which will meet No. 1 Bentworth in Tuesday’s semifinals.

Bentworth 3, Trinity Christian 0 – Ryan Moessner had a goal and an assist and Adam Moessner and Aiden McMurray also scored to lead top-seeded Bentworth (17-0) past No. 9 Trinity Christian (11-5-1) in the Class A quarterfinals. Dillan Colbert also had an assist for the Bearcats, who will take on No. 4 Beaver County Christian in Tuesday’s semifinals.

Eden Christian 1, Winchester Thurston 0 (OT) – Seventh-seeded Eden Christian (10-6-2) knocked off No. 2 Winchester Thurston (13-3-1) in the Class A quarterfinals and will take on No. 3 OLSH in Tuesday’s semifinals.

Mars 1, Chartiers Valley 0 – Logan Coone scored the winning goal and Eli Stasiowski preserved the shutout as No. 6 Mars (15-1-4) held off upset-minded 14th seed Chartiers Valley (9-9) in the Class 3A quarterfinals. The Fightin’ Planets will meet No. 7 Franklin Regional in Monday’s semifinals.

OLSH 2, Springdale 1 (SO) – Brady Hernandez scored in regulation to help No. 3 OLSH (14-2) to a 2-1 victory over No. 6 Springdale (14-5) in a penalty kick shootout in the Class A quarterfinals. Nate Dubas scored for the Dynamos. The Chargers will meet No. 7 Eden Christian (10-6-2) in Tuesday’s semifinals.

Girls volleyball

Beaver 3, Gateway 0 – Kailyn Connelly had 16 kills and three blocks, Sophia Sharpless had 21 digs and Zoe Ringer added 27 assists, 11 digs and four kills to lead top-seeded Beaver (16-3) past No. 16 Gateway (9-6) in the Class 3A first round. Jaedyn Brown had eight kills, eight digs and five aces and Aubrey Bumblis added 12 digs for the Bobcats, who will face No. 8 Oakland Catholic in Saturday’s quarterfinals.

Hampton 3, Greensburg Salem 0 – Payton Galietti had a team-high 10 kills, Lilly Muczinski added 25 assists and 11 digs and Anabel Fazzini recorded 26 digs to lead No. 4 Hampton (12-5) past No. 13 Greensburg Salem (15-4) in the Class 3A first round. Anna Hensberger added six kills and Marin Katona-Bock had five kills and 10 digs for the Talbots, who will face No. 12 South Fayette in the quarterfinals Saturday.

Mars 3, Albert Gallatin 0 – Cecilia Christy had 15 kills and four blocks and Gabi Weidemann dished out 30 assists to lead No. 2 Mars (15-4) past No. 18 Albert Gallatin (9-9) in the Class 3A first round. The Fightin’ Planets will face No. 7 Indiana in Saturday’s quarterfinals.
