High school roundup for Oct. 23, 2025: Beaver stuns 2-time defending champ South Park

Anthony Furda scored both his team’s goals, each off of a free kick, as No. 9 Beaver (15-4) knocked off top-seeded South Park (18-2), the two-time defending champs, 2-1, in a WPIAL Class 2A boys soccer quarterfinal Thursday. The Bobcats (15-4) will take on No. 4 Avonworth in the semifinals.

Deer Lakes 1, North Catholic 0 – Jacob Orseno scored the winning goal, assisted by Larry Rommes, as No. 6 Deer Lakes (16-3-1) knocked off No. 3 North Catholic in the Class 2A quarterfinals. The Lancers will meet No. 2 Quaker Valley in the semifinals at a time and date to be determined.

Quaker Valley 3, Shady Side Academy 2 (OT) – Finn Thompson scored the game-winning goal in double overtime for No. 2 Quaker Valley (17-2-1) in a Class 2A quarterfinal victory over No. 10 Shady Side Academy (12-5-1). Patrick Conners and Sutton Hoehl also scored for the Quakers, who will meet No. 6 Deer Lakes in the semifinals.

Girls soccer

Fox Chapel 6, West Allegheny 2 – Emily McKee scored all six goals, including the 100th of her career, to lead top-seeded Fox Chapel (17-1-1) past No. 9 West Allegheny (10-9) in the Class 3A quarterfinals. Fox Chapel will meet No. 4 Plum in the semifinals.

Moon 2, Shaler 1 – Anna Palm and Bella Taylor scored to lead No. 3 Moon (18-1) to a Class 3A quarterfinals win. Gabby Alcalde scored for No. 11 Shaler (10-8-1). The Tigers will face No. 2 South Fayette in the semifinals.

North Allegheny 2, Pine-Richland 1 (SO ) – Sahara Catlos converted the shootout-winning penalty kick and Jordan Beemer stopped two Rams attempts to send No. 5 North Allegheny (15-3-2) past No. 4 Pine-Richland (14-3-1) in the Class 4A quarterfinals. Emma Shupansky, Avery Ruffus and Lydia Randiga also converted their penalties and Rosalia Varlotta scored in the first half for the Tigers, who will meet No. 1 Peters Township in the semifinals. Lexi Hensel scored in the first half and Molly Baker, Emmie Kline and Kendall Hughey made their PKs for the Rams.

Peters Township 2, Canon-McMillan 0 – Marina Hajnosz scored both goals to lead No. 1 Peters Township (15-2-2) past No. 8 Canon-McMillan (9-7-1) in a Class 4A quarterfinal. Peters will meet No. 5 North Allegheny in the semifinals.

Seneca Valley 1, Upper St. Clair 0 (OT) – Maddie Marcotte scored the golden goal in double overtime for No. 2 Seneca Valley (11-3-2) in a Class 4A quarterfinal win over No. 7 Upper St. Clair (10-6-2). The Raiders will face No. 3 Norwin in the semifinals.

South Fayette 5, Montour 3 – Silvi Rossi and Mia Deramo scored two goals apiece to lead No. 2 South Fayette (17-1-1) past No. 7 Montour (13-5) in the Class 3A quarterfinals. Gabby Bienecke also scored for the Lions, who will meet No. 3 Moon in the semifinals.

Girls volleyball

Beaver 3, Chartiers Valley 0 – Kailyn Connelly led the way with 12 kills and six blocks, Jaedyn Brown followed with six kills and Anna Vinopal had five kills and 12 digs for No. 2 Beaver (17-1) in a Class 3A quarterfinal win over No. 7 Chartiers Valley (15-5). Kayden Blinn had 24 assists and five kills for the Bobcats, who will face No. 3 Mars in the semifinals.

Mars 3, Greensburg Salem 2 – Rylee Wooldridge finished with 24 kills and 13 digs, Cecilia Christy followed with 23 kills and Gabi Weidemann had 48 assists and 15 digs for No.3 Mars (15-4) in a Class 3A quarterfinal win over No. 6 Greensburg Salem (16-2). Alaina Graham had 30 digs for the Planets, who will meet No. 2 Beaver in the semifinals.

In the other Class 3A quarterfinals, top-seeded Oakland Catholic swept No. 9 South Fayette, 3-0, and No. 5 Hampton defeated No. 4 Thomas Jefferson, 3-1.

In the Class 2A quarterfinals, top-seeded Hopewell swept No. 9 Burrell, 3-0, No. 4 Our Lady of the Sacred Heart beat No. 5 Mohawk, 3-1, No. 2 Waynesburg finished off No. 10 Neshannock, 3-0, and No. 11 Avonworth got past No. 3 Seton LaSalle, 3-2.

Field hockey

Shady Side Academy 7, Winchester Thurston 0 – Harley Tomasi scored a hat trick and Kate Benec added a pair of goals as two-time defending champion Shady Side Academy (16-2-1) earned another trip to the WPIAL Class A finals with a win over No. 4 Winchester Thurston (3-10-1). Ludi Martin and Abby Bruno also scored for the Bulldogs, who will face No. 2 Aquinas Academy in the championship game at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at North Allegheny.

Aquinas Academy 1, Ellis School 0 – Felicity Koble scored the overtime winner to lead No. 2 Aquinas Academy (9-5) past No. 3 Ellis School (6-7-1) in the Class A semifinals.

Hockey

Avonworth 8, Greensburg Salem 0 – Linus Jesiowski scored four goals, Cooper Powell dished out four assists and Andrew Hetcko made 18 saves to lead Avonworth (3-1-1) past Greensburg Salem (2-4) in Class A. Austin Dzadovsky had a goal and two assists and Owen Stiers, Joey Moore and Richard Malsch each added a goal and an assist for Avonworth.

Bethel Park 3, Latrobe 2 (OT) – Luke Fauth scored the overtime winner for Bethel Park (2-2) in a Class 2A win. Preston Miller and Josh Matthews scored for Latrobe (2-1-1). Lukas Crisson and Dylan Hartman also scored for Bethel Park.

Bishop McCort 10, Wheeling Park 1 – Zakhar Bryndin had a hat trick and added an assist, Mark Pazniak collected two goals and two assists and Ben Cannizzaro dished out four assists to lead Bishop McCort (3-1) to a Class 2A win. Parker Jasko scored for Wheeling Park (0-2).

Blackhawk 4, Montour 1 – Grant Shroads led with a goal and two assists and Dominic Giocondi, Finn Conlon and Daniel Ostrom added a goal apiece for Blackhawk (2-0) in a Class A win. Dylan Hogue scored for Montour (0-3-1).

Elizabeth Forward 8, Deer Lakes 1 – Luke Forbes had a hat trick and added an assist and Cam Thompson finished with two goals and an assist for Elizabeth Forward (1-3) in a Division 2 win. Blake Hvozdik, Ian Kugler and Caden Biddle also scored for EF. Mason Cervone scored for Deer Lakes (4-1).

Hempfield 6, Shaler 2 – Guerin Gardner, Nathan Planey, Brady Wassel, JJ Williams, Jonathan Holtzman and Nick Crupie scored for Hempfield (4-0) in a Class 2A win. Chase Irwin and Brady Malcolm scored for Shaler (1-3).

Knoch 6, Morgantown 5 (OT) – Zack Weiland scored the overtime winner and added a pair of assists to send Knoch (3-3) to a Division 2 win. Synjun Mitchell had two goals and an assist, Mitchell Meyers and Cam Christie each had a goal and an assist and Andy Rekich also scored for Knoch. Justin Daffner and Luke Quigley each scored twice and Dominic Petrucci had a goal and two assists for Morgantown (3-1-1).

Moon 5, Beaver 1 – David Gallup scored twice, Clayton Foster and Jordan Rieke each had a goal and an assist and Brody Eckert also scored to power Moon (5-0-1) to a Class A win. Danny Cogis scored for Beaver (1-3).

Mt. Lebanon 7, Franklin Regional 1 – Xavier Bias and Cameron Mayer scored two goals apiece for Mt. Lebanon (1-3) in a Class 3A win. Ryan Crouse scored for Franklin Regional (1-2). Graham Resler, Sean Hough and Parker Arlet also scored for Mt. Lebanon.

North Allegheny 5, Fox Chapel 1 – Alex Costa scored a hat trick and Kyle Imm and Luke DiRenzo each added a goal to lead North Allegheny (3-0) to a Class 3A win. Tucker Cullen scored for Fox Chapel (1-4).

North Catholic 7, Richland 0 – Samuel Langer scored two goals and Sebastian Alessandro and Bryce Radeke had a goal and assist each to lead North Catholic (2-1) to a Class A win over Richland (0-2).

Ringgold 6, Carrick 2 – Landon Vaccaro had a hat trick and Bruce Santana, Nolan Mosco and Brady Lippert had a goal apiece to lead Ringgold (4-1) to a Division 2 win. Chris Tomassi and Dimitri Valcheff scored for Carrick (0-3).

Seneca Valley 4, Upper St. Clair 2 – Jacob Gilbert scored twice, Owen Martin had a goal and an assist and Cooper Hoehn also scored to help Seneca Valley (4-0) to a Class 3A win. Samuel Casciani and Nico Galardini scored for Upper St. Clair (1-2-2).

South Fayette 5, Central Catholic 4 (SO) – Jackson Stilley scored the tying goal with 2:34 to play to lead South Fayette (3-2) to a Class 3A shootout win. Mikhail Lobanov had a goal and an assist and Rocco Bovalino and Johnny Alex also scored for South Fayette. Aaron Daley had a goal and two assists and Nate Morgan, Cain Phillip and Chris Sargo also scored for Central Catholic (3-1-1).

Thomas Jefferson 7, Pine-Richland 4 – Lucas Blose and Michael Burns scored two goals apiece and Jacob Simon, Emery Molnar and Garrett Fetzko also scored for Thomas Jefferson (3-2) in a Class 3A win. Cullen Campbell scored two goals for Pine-Richland (0-3-1).
