High school roundup for Oct. 25, 2025: Burrell knocks off top seed in Class 2A girls soccer playoffs

McKenna Miller scored off of an assist from Makiah Buchak while Leah Waldsmith recorded the shutout, leading No. 8 Burrell to a 1-0 upset victory over No. 1 South Park (19-1) in the WPIAL Class 2A girls soccer quarterfinals Saturday.

Burrell (12-6-2) will match up against No. 4 Mt. Pleasant in the semifinals. It was the second straight year Burrell beat the top seed in the quarterfinals. The Bucs knocked off No. 1 Mt. Pleasant last year.

Bentworth 2, OLSH 0 – Brielle Dillon scored both goals as No. 2 Bentworth (17-1-1) defeated No. 10 OLSH (8-7-1) in the Class A quarterfinals. Julia Brandau earned the shutout in goal and Madelyn Johns and Meredith Allender had assists for the Bearcats, who will take on No. 11 Waynesburg in the semifinals.

Quaker Valley 1, Central Valley 0 – Maddie Gatehouse scored in the first half, assisted by Ari Bosh, and goalkeeper Ava Hajok made it stand up as No. 3 Quaker Valley (15-2-1) shut out No. 6 Central Valley (13-4-1) in the Class 2A quarterfinals. Quaker Valley will face No. 2 Freeport in the semifinals.

Springdale 3, Riverside 0 – Tessa Derringer, Adele Walters-Vrabel and Ariana Caltagarone had goals and Hailey Marchlewski tallied two assists as No. 4 Springdale (12-1-1) defeated No. 5 Riverside (9-4-1) in the Class A quarterfinals. Genevieve Conklin recorded the shutout. Springdale will play Sewickley Academy in the semifinals.

Sewickley Academy 2, Carlynton 0 – Emilia Carrabba and Makenzie Dice scored late in the second half, assisted by Claire Karsman and Marin Edmunds, as top-seeded Sewickley Academy (17-1) got past No. 9 Carlynton (11-8-1) in the Class A quarterfinals. The Panthers will face No. 4 Springdale in the semifinals.

Waynesburg 3, Seton LaSalle 1 – Ava DiAlessandro, Rylei Rastoka and Serenity Taylor scored goals and Emily Rafferty chipped in two assists as No. 11 Waynesburg (11-4-2) pulled off the upset over No. 3 Seton LaSalle (14-5) in the WPIAL Class A quarterfinals. Waynesburg advances to the semifinals to play No. 2 Bentworth..

Boys soccer

Fox Chapel 1, Pine-Richland 0 – Noah Fincher scored on a 30-yard strike to lead No. 2 Fox Chapel (15-2) to a Class 4A quarterfinal victory over No. 10 Pine-Richland (6-11-2). The Foxes will face No. 3 Plum in the semifinals at a day, time and site to be determined.

Peters Township 1, North Allegheny 0 – Keedan Kelly scored the decisive goal and Jack Stewart preserved the shutout as top-seeded Peters Township (15-0-1) got past No. 8 North Allegheny (10-6-3) in the Class 4A quarterfinals. Peters will face No. 4 Seneca Valley in the semifinals.

Seneca Valley 3, Canon-McMillan 1 – In the Class 4A quarterfinals, Connor Mackrell, Owen Eastgate and Michael Pokrzywinski scored for No. 4 Seneca Valley (16-2) in its victory against No. 5 Canon-McMillan. Seneca Valley advances to face No. 1 Peters Township in the semifinals.

Football

Bishop Canevin 43, Burgettstown 10 – Thomas Coates scored on touchdown catches of 70 and 20 yards and Myontae Mott scored on runs of 40 and 60 yards as Bishop Canevin (7-3, 5-1) closed out the regular season with a Class A Black Hills Conference win. Colton County scored a 3-yard touchdown and kicked a 24-yard field goal for Burgettstown (1-7, 0-5).

Shenango 28, Summit Academy 6 – Caleb McConnell threw for 148 yards and two touchdowns as Shenango (4-6, 3-3) beat Summit Academy (1-9, 1-5) in the Class A Big 7 Conference. Niko DeSalvo added 127 rushing yards and two touchdowns for Shenango. Summit Academy’s Syamir Newkirk threw for 162 yards and a 73-yard touchdown to Demetrius Crosby, who had five receptions for 93 yards.

Kiski School 47, Blue Ridge School 3 – Levi Porter returned the opening kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown, leading Kiski School (6-2) past Blue Ridge School (4-5) in St. George, Va. Kiski quarterback Mac Armstrong threw TD passes to Elan McCrorey and Dean Stevens and Kiski’s running backs combined for 180 rushing yards, including a 4-yard score by Max McMillan. Cornerback Lewin Tauberschmidt returned an interception 45 yards for a TD and also made a 28-yard field goal. Kiski will host Linsly School next Saturday in its final game of the season.

Girls volleyball

Class 4A – Isabelle Hoppe had six kills, 11 assists, 12 digs and three blocks as No. 5 Pine-Richland (12-5) defeated No. 4 Seneca Valley (10-6) in the quarterfinals, 25-18, 25-18, 25-20. Megan DeKunder had 15 digs and four aces for the Rams, who will face No. 1 North Allegheny in the semifinals.

The Tigers (12-2) defeated No. 8 Shaler (13-4) in four games, 25-27, 25-23, 26-24, 25-17. In the other half of the bracket, No. 2 Peters Township (11-2) downed No. 10 Canon-McMillan (10-7) in four games, 20-25, 28-26, 25-16, 25-18, while No. 6 North Catholic (10-4) downed No. 3 Upper St. Clair (13-3) in four, 25-20, 26-24, 22-25, 25-22.

Class A – Top-seeded Frazier will take on No. 4 Eden Christian and No. 7 California will meet No. 6 Serra Catholic in the semifinals Wednesday.

The Commodores (13-2) rolled to a 25-13, 25-17, 25-22 sweep of No. 9 Carmichaels (7-10) while the Warriors (11-3) defeated No. 5 St. Joseph (11-5) in four games, 25-16, 25-14, 13-25, 29-27). The Trojans (14-4) knocked off No. 2 Beth-Center (13-2) in a sweep, 25-17, 25-22, 25-17, while the Eagles (13-5) outlasted No. 3 Fort Cherry (14-3) in five games, 25-23, 12-25, 23-25, 25-17, 15-12.
