Rosie Pellegrino scored the winning goal, assisted by Kayleigh Clark, and Kate McEnroe recorded the shutout to lift top-seeded Mars (16-0) to a 1-0 victory over No. 9 Elizabeth Forward (15-4) in the WPIAL Class 3A girls soccer quarterfinals Thursday. The Fightin’ Planets will take on No. 5 South Fayette in Tuesday’s semifinals.
Canon-McMillan 2, Seneca Valley 1 – No. 5 Canon-McMillan (9-6-2) edged No. 4 Seneca Valley (13-3-1) in the Class 4A quarterfinals. The Big Macs will play No. 1 North Allegheny in the semifinals Monday.
Fox Chapel 5, Peters Township 1 – Emily McKee scored a pair of goals and sixth-seeded Fox Chapel responded to allowing the first goal by scoring five straight in a victory over third-seeded Peters Township in the Class 4A quarterfinals. Maddie Grimsley, Kate Friday and Taylor Wilkinson also scored for the Foxes (11-4-2), who will meet No. 2 Upper St. Clair in Monday’s semifinals. Cam Klein scored for Peters Township (14-2-2).
North Allegheny 2, Mt. Lebanon 1 (SO) – Rowan Barsotti scored on a penalty kick in regulation and the Tigers held a 3-0 advantage in the shootout as top-seeded North Allegheny (19-0) pulled out a Class 4A quarterfinal win. Genevieve Palumbo scored for No. 8 Mt. Lebanon (10-7-2). North Allegheny will face No. 5 Canon-McMillan in Monday’s semifinals.
South Fayette 3, Thomas Jefferson 0 – Emily Sinton, Abbey Spalla and Olivia Renk scored to lead No. 5 South Fayette (13-4-2) past No. 4 Thomas Jefferson (17-2) in a Class 3A quarterfinal win. The Lions will meet No. 1 Mars in the semifinals.
Upper St. Clair 2, Butler 0 – Helena Walker and Sierra Dupre scored to lead No. 2 Upper St. Clair (17-1) to a Class 4A quarterfinal win over No. 7 Butler (10-7-1). The Panthers will meet No. 6 Fox Chapel in Monday’s semifinals.
Boys soccer
Quaker Valley 7, Elizabeth Forward 0 – Bennett Haas recorded a hat trick and Carter Turk, Cameron Higgins, Nick Allan and Kiril Grin each added a goal as No.2 Quaker Valley (16-3) blanked No. 10 Elizabeth Forward (11-7-1) in the Class 2A quarterfinals. The Quakers will face No. 6 Shady Side Academy in Monday’s semifinals.
Shady Side Academy 3, Hopewell 1 – Amir Awais scored two goals and Manek Gerhardy added another to lead No. 6 Shady Side Academy (14-4-1) past No. 14 Hopewell (10-7) in a Class 2A quarterfinal win. The Bulldogs will meet No. 2 Quaker Valley in Monday’s semifinals.
South Park 3, Keystone Oaks 1 – Top-seeded South Park (19-0) beat No. 8 Keystone Oaks (12-6) in the WPIAL Class 2A quarterfinals and moves on to play No. 4 Avonworth in Monday’s semifinals.
Girls volleyball
Bishop Canevin 3, California 1 – No. 3 Bishop Canevin (18-1) dropped the first set of a Class A quarterfinal with No. 11 California (11-6) then rallied for a 23-25, 25-17, 25-23, 25-16 win. The Crusaders will play No. 2 Frazier in the semifinals.
Canon McMillan 3, Penn-Trafford 1 – Natalie Carr had 22 kills and 13 digs, Abby Tucker followed with 13 kills, and Josie Carter had 17 assists and 16 digs to lead No. 3 Canon McMillan (14-3) to a Class 4A quarterfinal win over No. 6 Penn-Trafford (13-4), 25-23, 23-25, 25-16, 25-23. The Big Macs will meet No. 2 Seneca Valley in the semifinals.
Frazier 3, Beaver County Christian 0 – No. 2 Frazier (18-1) swept No. 7 Beaver County Christian (13-4) by scores of 25-9, 25-19 and 25-21 in the Class A quarterfinals. The Commodores will play No. 3 Bishop Canevin in the semifinals.
Greensburg Central Catholic 3, Eden Christian 0 – Fourth-seeded Greensburg Central Catholic rolled into the Class A semifinals with a 3-0 sweep of fifth-seeded Eden Christian (17-3). The Centurions (13-4) won 25-22, 25-22, 25-18 and will face top-seeded Serra Catholic in the semis at a time, date and place to be determined.
North Allegheny 3, Hempfield 0 – Top-seeded North Allegheny (14-1) headed back to the Class 4A semifinals with a quarterfinal sweep of No. 9 Hempfield (9-8). The Tigers won by scores of 25-13, 25-19, 25-17. North Allegheny will play No. 4 Pine-Richland next.
Pine-Richland 3, Upper St. Clair 1 – Fourth-seeded Pine-Richland (13-5) picked up a four-set win over No. 5 Upper St. Clair (13-3) in the Class 4A quarterfinals, 25-19, 25-18, 17-25, 25-22. The Rams will face top-seeded North Allegheny in the semifinals.
Serra Catholic 3, West Greene 0 – No. 1 Serra Catholic (18-0) swept No. 8 West Greene (14-4) 25-13, 25-21, 25-9, in a Class A quarterfinal match. The Eagles will face No. 4 Greensburg Central Catholic in the semifinals.
Seneca Valley 3, Peters Township 1 – No. 2 Seneca Valley (12-3) advanced to the Class 4A semifinals with a win over No. 7 Peters Township (11-7), 25-17, 19-25, 25-23, 25-21. The Raiders will play No. 3 Canon McMillan next.
Football
Union 49, Summit Academy 22 – Braylon Thomas ran for four touchdowns and threw for two more to lead Union (8-2, 5-1) to a Class A Big 7 Conference victory in a rare Thursday afternoon game. Thomas became the first Lawrence County player to run and pass for 1,000 yards in a regular season. Grayson Blakley and Dayne Johnke caught scoring passes from Thomas. Andrew Cartwright also had a TD run. Jamari Manning had touchdown runs of 48 and 59 yards for Summit Academy (0-10, 0-6).
Union has clinched second place in the Big 7 and could share the conference title if Rochester upsets South Side on Friday.
Hockey
Bishop McCort 4, Armstrong 2 – Nikita Kolomejtsev had a hat trick, Nar-Ulan Baiken also scored, and Timur Naletov had three assists for Bishop McCort (2-1) in a Class 2A win. Jason Rullo and Bruce Liptak scored for Armstrong (0-4).
Blackhawk 5, Beaver 0 – Finn Conlon and Owen Keister each had a goal and two assists, Matias Huber added a goal and an assist, and Evan Kennelly earned a 15-save shutout as Blackhawk (2-0) topped Beaver (1-3) in Class A.
Central Catholic 6, Baldwin 3 – Evan Benscoter scored twice and Griffin Lewis and Jay Donahue each had a goal and an assist for Central Catholic (3-1) in a Class 3A win. Logan Cramer and Mack Dempsey each had a goal and an assist for Baldwin (0-3).
Central Valley 12, Trinity 3 – Gavin Crivelli scored four goals and Gage Helbig and Aiden Pournaras each had a hat trick for Central Valley (2-1) in a Varsity D2 win. Jackson Kramer, Gage Nalepka and Easton Elliot scored for Trinity (1-1).
Greensburg Salem 6, Indiana 5 (OT) – Carter Cherok scored the winner in overtime as Greensburg Salem (3-3) fought back from 2-1 and 5-2 deficits to beat Indiana (3-1-2) in Class A. Mikey Kingerski scored a hat trick while Hunter Webb and Chase Kusher each scored a goal for Greensburg Salem. Ash Lockard and Phil Bell each scored a pair of goals for Indiana.
North Allegheny 7, Cathedral Prep 1 – Evan Kerber and Ed Scherer each had two goals and Marc Joyson and Ryan Jackman each added a goal and an assist for North Allegheny (3-1) in a Class 3A victory. Ethan Cunningham scored for Cathedral Prep (1-3).
Norwin 5, Hempfield 2 – Alex Thomas scored four times, Joey Vecchio added a goal, and Dom Costantino and Dom Cerilli each had a pair of assists as Norwin (3-0-1) won in Class 3A. Nino Dipietro and Jonny Holtzman scored for Hempfield (1-2).
Pine-Richland 4, Bethel Park 0 – Zachary Howard had two goals, Noah Taggert and Jeremy Casper also scored, and Nathan Dembowski picked up a 16-save shutout for Pine-Richland (3-1) in a Class 3A win over Bethel Park (3-2-1).
Shaler 12, Kiski 2 – Jacob Skerlong, Luca Wallander and Matthew Stelitano each scored two goals for Shaler (4-0) in a Class A win. Matt Behrik and Ethan Bombalski scored for Kiski (0-4). Dylan Marsden, Jacob Kunc, Joshua Yuiska, Chase Irwin, Blake Whiteman and Tyler Garasich also scored for the Titans.
Thomas Jefferson 7, Latrobe 3 – Scott Allan had a pair of goals while Liam Mahoney, Lucas Blose, Jake Stock, Ryan Galis and Ryder McGuirk also scored for Thomas Jefferson (5-0) in a Class 2A win. Joey Crimboli scored twice and Louie Amatucci added a goal for Latrobe (3-2).
Wheeling Catholic 3, Plum 2 – Logan Pielech scored two goals and Bode Burge added a goal to lead Wheeling Catholic (2-0) to a Class A win. Luca Lapiana and Travis Marks scored for Plum (2-2).
