High school roundup for Oct. 26, 2024: Plum boys get past Canon-McMillan in OT

Fedgy Fertil scored the winning goal in the second overtime to lead No. 1 Plum to a 3-2 victory over No. 8 Canon-McMillan (12-5-2) in the WPIAL Class 4A boys soccer quarterfinals Saturday. Austin Kolankowski and Gage Adinolfi also scored for the Mustangs (16-0-3), who advance to Tuesday’s semifinals to play No. 4 North Allegheny.
Fox Chapel 3, Upper St. Clair 1 – Milo Chiu, Carson Krushansky and Aiden Stein scored as No. 3 Fox Chapel (11-4-2) rolled to a Class 4A quarterfinal win. Liam Burlovic scored for No. 6 Upper St. Clair (11-6-2). The Foxes will take on No. 2 Peters Township in Tuesday’s semifinals.
North Allegheny 1, North Hills 0 – Leonardo Yu scored the game-winning goal as No. 4 North Allegheny (16-3-1) got past No. 12 North Hills (11-9) in the Class 4A quarterfinals. The Tigers will take on top-seeded Plum in Tuesday’s semifinals.
Peters Township 2, Seneca Valley 1 – Jeven Kelly and Anthony Maiello scored for No. 2 Peters Township (16-1-1) in a Class 4A quarterfinal win over No. 7 Seneca Valley (13-6). Mark McConahy scored for the Raiders. Peters Township will face No. 3 Fox Chapel in Tuesday’s semifinals.
Girls soccer
North Catholic 2, Beaver 1 – In the Class 2A quarterfinals, Kathleen Virostek and Lauren Mealie scored to lead No. 6 North Catholic (15-3) to an upset win over No. 3 Beaver (16-2). Lillia Battalini scored for the Bobcats. North Catholic will meet No, 2 Quaker Valley in the semifinals Tueday.
Quaker Valley 1, Deer Lakes 0 – Lily Baker scored the lone goal and Ava Hajok recorded the shutout as No. 2 Quaker Valley (15-2-2) blanked No. 7 Deer Lakes (14-4-2) in the Class 2A quarterfinals. Quaker Valley matches up against North Catholic in the semifinals Tuesday.
Seton LaSalle, 4 Riverview 0 – Angelina McGrath, Torri Carter, Kennedy Bakota and Sydney Morgan scored to power No. 2 Seton LaSalle (14-2-2) past No. 10 Riverview (11-4) in the Class A quarterfinals. Regan Mazur preserved the shutout for the Rebels, who will face No. 6 Winchester Thurston in Tuesday’s semifinals.
Sewickley Academy 1, Aquinas Academy 0 – No. 5 Sewickley Academy (13-3-1) stopped the playoff run of No. 13 Aquinas Academy (11-6) in the Class A quarterfinals. The Panthers will face No. 1 Springdale in Tuesday’s semifinals.
South Park 4, Freeport 1 – After playing to a scoreless draw through regulation and two overtime periods, No. 4 South Park (15-4-1) won the penalty kick shootout, 4-1, to get past No. 5 Freeport (12-2-1) in the Class 2A quarterfinals. The Eagles will face No. 9 Burrell in the semifinals Tuesday.
Springdale 5, Freedom 0 – Tessa Derringer and Molly Hurley scored two goals each and Baileigh Haas recorded the shutout as No. 1 Springdale (15-1) blanked No. 8 Freedom (9-7) in the Class A quarterfinals at Fox Chapel. Briana Ross had a goal and two assists for Springdale, which will face No. 5 Sewickley Academy on Tuesday in the semifinals.
Winchester Thurston 4, Bentworth 0 – Margherita Memoli scored three goals to lead No. 6 Winchester Thurston (14-5) to the upset over No. 3 Bentworth (16-2) at Peters Township in the Class A quarterfinals. Meredith Snyder added three assists, Avi Keller had a goal and an assist and Maeve Dever picked up the shutout in goal for Winchester Thurston, which advances to the semifinals for the first time in program history, where it will play No. 2 Seton LaSalle.
Girls volleyball
Beaver 3, Oakland Catholic 1 – No. 1 Beaver (17-3) defeated No. 8 North Catholic, 25-23, 20-25, 25-21, 25-19. Kailyn Connelly had 16 kills and one block while Zoe Ringer had 36 assists, six digs, one kill and one ace. Beaver faces Hampton on Wednesday in the semifinals at North Allegheny.
Freeport 3, Chartiers Valley 2 – No. 6 Freeport (12-3) dropped two of the first three sets then rallied for a 25-20, 15-25, 22-25, 25-18, 15-10 victory over No. 3 Chartiers Valley (16-3) in the Class 3A quarterfinals. The Yellowjackets will meet No. 2 Mars in Wednesday’s semifinals.
Hampton 3, South Fayette 2 – No. 4 Hampton (13-5) rallied to defeat No. 12 South Fayette (10-8), 22-25, 20-25, 25-22, 26-24, 15-8, in the WPIAL Class 3A quarterfinals.
Hopewell 3, Avonworth 1 – No. 3 Hopewell (16-2) dropped the first set then won three straight, 13-25, 26-24, 25-18, 27-25, to defeat No. 11 Avonworth (11-10) in the Class 2A quarterfinals. The Vikings will meet No. 2 Neshannock in the semifinals Tuesday.
Mars 3, Indiana 0 – No. 2 Mars (16-4) swept No. 7 Indiana (15-3), 25-14, 25-21, 25-13, for the Class 3A quarterfinal win. Lily Javor, Ella Nicotra, Rylee Wooldridge and Cecilia Christy combined for 32 kills for Mars while Gabi Weidemann contributed 30 assists. Mars plays No. 6 Freeport in the semifinals Wednesday at North Allegheny.
Neshannock 3, Burrell 0 – No. 2 Neshannock (15-1) swept No. 10 Burrell, 25-16, 25-23, 25-19, to advance to the Class 2A semifinals to face No. 3 Hopewell at North Allegheny on Tuesday.
Quaker Valley 3, Ellwood City 0 – Top-seeded Quaker Valley (16-2) swept No. 8 Ellwood City (14-5) in the Class 2A quarterfinals, 25-15, 25-21, 25-18. The Quakers will meet No. 5 Southmoreland in the semifinals Tuesday.
Southmoreland 3, South Park 2 – In the Class 2A quarterfinals, No. 5 Southmoreland (16-3) beat No. 4 South Park (14-6), 23-25, 25-23, 25-20, 23-25, 15-7. Southmoreland will play the No. 1 Quaker Valley at North Allegheny in Tuesday’s semifinals.
Girls tennis
Lower Merion 3, Mt. Lebanon 1 – Lower Merion (22-0) beat Mt. Lebanon (17-1) in the PIAA Class 3A team semifinals. Michelle Yang picked up Mt. Lebanon’s win with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Eden Anolik in the second singles match.
Lower Moreland 4, North Catholic 1 – In the PIAA Class 2A semifinals, Lower Moreland (20-0) defeated North Catholic (19-2). North Catholic’s Ava Conley and Macaria Stall won the second doubles match over Sophia Cherepakhin and Ava Raitman, 6-2, 6-1.
Scranton Prep 3, Quaker Valley 0 – Scranton Prep (20-2) won both doubles matches and its only single match to sweep Quaker Valley (15-3) in the PIAA Class 2A semifinals.
