High school roundup for Oct. 28, 2025: West Allegheny, Seneca Valley reach WPIAL finals with upset wins

Harrison Murray scored the winning goal in the 60th minute, assisted by Anthony Mimna, as No. 8 West Allegheny continued its WPIAL boys soccer playoff run with a 1-0 victory over No. 5 Thomas Jefferson (17-3-1) in the Class 3A semifinals.

Zach Wallace earned the shutout in goal for West A (13-6), which will meet No. 3 Franklin Regional in the finals.

Seneca Valley 3, Peters Township 0 – Owen Eastgate scored all three goals and Chase Good earned the shutout in net as fourth-seeded Seneca Valley (17-2) knocked off top seed Peters Township (15-1-1) in the Class 4A semifinals to return to the WPIAL championship game for the fourth time this decade. The Raiders will meet No. 2 Fox Chapel in the finals.

Girls soccer

Bentworth 1, Waynesburg 0 – Bella Moyer scored the decisive goal as No. 2 Bentworth (18-1-1) blanked No. 11 Waynesburg (11-5-2) in the Class A semifinals. Megan Keturakis assisted on the winning goal for the Bearcats, who will meet top-seeded Sewickley Academy in the finals at Highmark Stadium.

Girls volleyball

Class 3A – Kailyn Connelly had 21 kills and three blocks and Kayden Blinn contributed 48 assists, three kills and 14 digs to lead No. 2 Beaver (18-1) past No. 3 Mars (15-5) in the Class 3A semifinals. Game scores were 25-18, 25-27, 25-16 and 25-21.

Aubrey Bumblis finished with 26 digs, Lanie Malobabich had 10 kills and four blocks, Anna Vinopal added 16 digs and seven kills and Jaedyn Brown had 12 kills and 13 digs for the Bobcats, who will meet No. 1 Oakland Catholic in the finals Saturday.

The Eagles (19-1) swept No. 5 Hampton (10-5) by scores of 25-15, 25-23 and 25-16.

Class 2A – Eleventh-seeded Avonworth (14-6) continued its unexpected run to the WPIAL finals by handing No. 2 Waynesburg (14-1) its first loss of the year in five games in the Class 2A semifinals. Game scores were 16-25, 25-17, 25-12, 20-25 and 16-14.

In the other semifinal, top-seeded Hopewell (17-1) swept No. 4 OLSH (14-4) by scores of 25-13, 25-22 and 25-23.

Hockey

Baldwin 5, Wheeling Park 4 (SO) – Jacob Kaerchner’s second goal of the third period with 3:26 left in regulation helped Baldwin (2-3) to a shootout win in Class 2A. Ian Leuch and Austin Klein each had a goal and an assist and Zachariah Hunt made 32 saves for Baldwin. Luke Simonetti had a hat trick and Denny Belli had a goal and an assist for Wheeling Park (0-2-1).

Bishop McCort 7, Norwin 0 – Zakhar Bryndin scored a hat trick and Ben Cannizzaro had a goal and two assists to lead Bishop McCort (4-1) past Norwin (0-4-1) in Class 2A.

Canon-McMillan 3, Moon 2 – Grayson Costa and Elliot Moser scored in the final five minutes of regulation to lead Canon-McMillan (3-0) to a comeback win in Class A. Brayden Edgar also scored and Aiden Bobbs made 31 saves for Canon Mac. LJ DiFilippo and Gio Thompson scored for Moon (5-1-1).

Hempfield 3, Bethel Park 2 (SO) – JJ Williams and Andrew Bryant scored to help Hempfield (5-0) to a shootout victory in Class 2A. Jack Hartman and Lukas Crisson scored third-period goals for Bethel Park (2-2-1).

Indiana 3, Richland 2 – Samuel Frich and Andrew Manzek scored third-period goals to send Indiana (1-3-1) to a Class A win. Zendo Dzuro had a goal and two assists and Matthew Stone finished with a goal and an assist for Indiana. Wesley Dunlap and Wyatt Horten scored for Richland (0-3).

North Allegheny 6, Peters Township 1 – Eddie Scherer and Cedric Otey scored two goals apiece, Kyle Imm added a goal and an assist and Anthony Lucas also scored for North Allegheny (4-0) in a Class 3A win. Jack Kubistek scored for Peters Township (3-1).
