High school roundup for Oct. 29, 2024: South Fayette wins in PKs to get back to WPIAL finals

Abbey Spalla, Quinn Miller, Mia Deramo and Gabby Beinecke converted their attempts in the penalty kick shootout and Caitlyn Thompson recorded the shutout in goal as No. 2 South Fayette (17-3) defeated No. 6 Mars (17-3), 1-0, in the WPIAL Class 3A girls soccer semifinals Tuesday night.

The Lions won the shootout, 4-2. South Fayette will meet top-seeded Fox Chapel in the championship game at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Highmark Stadium.

Burrell 3, South Park 2 — Makiah Buchak maneuvered through two defenders and buried a shot with 16 seconds left to lead No. 9 Burrell to an upset win over No. 4 South Park in the Class 2A semifinals. Parker Moore and Maggie Nesko scored off Eva Wilson corner kicks in the first five minutes of the second half for the Bucs (14-5-1), who will meet No. 2 Quaker Valley for the WPIAL championship at 11 a.m. Saturday at Highmark Stadium. Ari Beck and Alicia Riberich scored for South Park (15-5-1).

Quaker Valley 2, North Catholic 0 – Lily Baker and Annabel Miko scored to lead No. 2 Quaker Valley (16-2-2) to a Class 2A semifinal win over No. 6 North Catholic (15-4). The Quakers will face No. 9 Burrell in the finals at 11 a.m. Saturday at Highmark Stadium.

Springdale 5, Sewickley Academy 1 – Briana Ross scored three goals and added an assist as top-seeded Springdale (16-1) defeated No. 5 Sewickley Academy (13-4-1) to advance to the WPIAL Class A championship game at Highmark Stadium.Carissa Walsh had a goal and an assist and Hailey Marchlewski also scored for the Dynamos, who will take on No. 6 Winchester Thurston in the finals at 6 p.m. Thursday.

Winchester Thurston 1, Seton LaSalle 0 – Margherita Memoli’s 19th goal of the season was the game winner as No. 6 Winchester Thurston (15-5) beat No. 2 Seton LaSalle (14-3-2) in a Class A semifinal win. Avi Keller assisted on the goal and Maeve Dever made four saves to preserve the shutout for the Bears, who will face No. 1 Springdale in the finals at 6 p.m. Thursday at Highmark Stadium.

Boys soccer

Bentworth 3, Beaver County Christian 0 – Adam Moessner, Ryan Moessner and Dillan Colbert scored a goal apiece to lead No. 1 Bentworth (18-0) over No. 4 Beaver County Christian (15-4) in a Class A semifinal win. The Bearcats will face No. 3 OLSH in the WPIAL finals at 8 p.m. Thursday at Highmark Stadium.

OLSH 1, Eden Christian 0 – No. 3 OLSH (15-2) got past No. 7 Eden Christian (10-7-2) on an own goal with 17:35 left in regulation in the Class A semifinals. The Chargers will meet No. 1 Bentworth for the WPIAL championship at 8 p.m. Thursday at Highmark Stadium.

Girls volleyball

Hopewell 3, Neshannock 2 – No. 3 Hopewell (17-2) dropped two of the first three sets before rallying for a 25-21, 19-25, 18-25, 25-17, 15-9 victory over No. 2 Neshannock (15-2) in the Class 2A semifinals. The Vikings will meet No. 1 Quaker Valley in the WPIAL finals at 1 p.m. Saturday at Peters Township.

Hockey

Blackhawk 4, Westmont Hilltop 1 – Dylan Leiper had a goal and two assists and Finn Conlon, Grant Shroads and Tyler Syka had a goal apiece to lead Blackhawk (2-0-1) to a Class A win. Gavin Replogle scored for Westmont Hilltop (0-3).

Cathedral Prep 6, Latrobe 3 – Chris Buschi and Tucker Kinnear scored two goals apiece and Charlie McBrier and Ashton Duchini added a goal each to lead Cathedral Prep (5-1) to a Class 2A win. Joey Crimboli, Cam Mikulsky and Preston Miller each scored for Latrobe (2-2).

South Fayette 2, Peters Township 1 – Trevor Dalessandro and Nathaniel Keller scored a goal apiece to lead South Fayette (1-3-1) to a Class 3A win. Luca Maietta scored for Peters Township (1-3).
