High school roundup for Oct. 30, 2023: Playoff run continues for South Fayette boys

Nathan Belculfine and Cole Johnson scored as No. 8 South Fayette continued its improbable playoff run with a 2-1 win over No. 5 Montour (15-4) in the WPIAL Class 3A boys soccer semifinals Monday night.

It was the 300th career victory for South Fayette coach Rob Eldridge. The Lions (13-4-3) will play No. 2 Hampton in the championship game at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Highmark Stadium.

Charleroi 1, Seton LaSalle 0 (OT) – Arlo McIntyre converted a penalty kick in overtime and Nathan Mazon recorded a shutout as top-seeded Charleroi (19-0) got past No. 4 Seton LaSalle (15-3-1) in the Class A semifinals. The Cougars will take on No. 7 Bentworth in the WPIAL finals at 8 p.m. Friday at Highmark Stadium.

Quaker Valley 4, Shady Side Academy 3 – Jack Karworski had two goals and two assists and Bennett Haas scored a pair of goals and added an assist to lead No. 2 Quaker Valley (17-3) to a Class 2A semifinal win. Emil Owings scored twice and Jackson Suski added a goal for No. 6 Shady Side Academy (14-5-1). The Quakers will take on top seed South Park in the WPIAL finals at 6 p.m. Thursday at Highmark Stadium.

South Park 4, Avonworth 2 – Top-seeded South Park (20-0) remained undefeated and earned a berth in the WPIAL finals with a Class 2A semifinal win over No. 4 Avonworth (16-3-1). The Eagles will meet No. 2 Quaker Valley in the championship game at 6 p.m. Thursday at Highmark Stadium.

Girls soccer

North Allegheny 2, Canon-McMillan 1 (OT) – Abigail Stager scored the winning goal in the first minute of overtime as top-seeded North Allegheny (20-0) got past No. 5 Canon-McMillan (9-7-2) in the Class 4A semifinals. Maddie Miller scored in regulation for the Tigers, who needed extra time for the second straight playoff game. They beat No. 8 Mt. Lebanon, 2-1, in a penalty shootout in the quarterfinals. Abby Ault scored for the Big Macs. North Allegheny will face No. 6 Fox Chapel in the championship game at 8 p.m. Thursday at Highmark Stadium.

Fox Chapel 5, Upper St. Clair 2 – Sixth-seeded Fox Chapel completed a surprise run to the WPIAL championship game, scoring three unanswered goals in the second half to surge past Upper St. Clair (18-1) in a Class 4A semifinal. The Foxes (12-4-2) will meet top-seeded North Allegheny in the finals at 8 p.m. Thursday at Highmark Stadium.

Hockey

Bishop Canevin 14, Sewickley Academy 0 – Ryan Saginaw scored seven goals and had two assists while Jayden Martincic scored a pair of goals and Cole Evan had a goal and five assists to lead Bishop Canevin (2-0) to a win in Varsity D2 against Sewickley Academy (0-4). Ben Ondrejko, Mason Glover, Brian Kalanish and Zach Bittner were the other goal scorers for the Crusaders.

Hempfield 5, Penn-Trafford 3 – Austin Herron, Nick Crupie, Chase Spehar, J.J. Williams and Nino DiPietro each scored a goal as Hempfield (2-2) defeated Penn-Trafford (1-3) in Class 2A. T.J. Ferguson, Robert Thatcher and Jack Blank scored for the Warriors.

Indiana 7, Kiski 1 – Nate Wood scored twice, Gabe Nettleton had a goal and three assists, and Jackson Albert added a goal and an assist as Indiana (4-1-2) won in Class A. Matt Behrik scored for Kiski (0-5).

Latrobe 5, Fox Chapel 4 – Joey Crimboli had two goals and Cam Mikulsky, Dylan Morris and Louie Amatucci also scored as Latrobe (4-2) held on for a Class 2A win. Hayden Ferra scored twice and Liam Wiseman and Grady Cullen also had goals for Fox Chapel (3-2).

Mars 10, West Allegheny 3 – Jacob Lestitian had a hat trick and added an assist as Mars (3-1) won in Class A. Luke Olshenske had a goal and two assists and Grant Weaver, Ben Bowser, Ethan Lipchin and William Matusek each contributed a goal and an assist. Brandon Switalski had two goals for West Allegheny (0-5).

Meadville 4, Butler 2 – Meadville (4-1) got goals from Rocco Tartaglione, Cole Sobolewski, Ryan Yunik and Preston Phillis in a Class A win. Brayden Hardsock and Owen Denny scored for Butler (3-3).

Neshannock 6, Burrell 5 – Brian McConahy had a hat trick and Giovanni Valentine added a goal and two assists as Neshannock (5-0) held off Burrell (3-2) in Varsity D2. Sam Mezzanotte and Will Kinchloe also scored for Neshannock. Mike Morazczyk and John Lukac each had two goals and Ryan Burkett also scored for Burrell.

Pine-Richland 4, Baldwin 0 – Zachary Howard scored twice while Benjamin Baileys and Carson Parkhill each added a goal for Pine-Richland (4-1) in a Class 3A shutout win over Baldwin (0-4). Brett Sudac made 16 saves for the shutout.

Quaker Valley 5, Montour 2 – Max Modrovich and Jace Vasbinder each had two goals and two assists and Luke Koehler also scored for Quaker Valley (5-0) in a Class A victory. Niko Sikorski and Thomas Barefoot scored for Montour (0-5).
