High school roundup for Oct. 31, 2024: North Catholic girls earn state playoff berth

Simone Sharpless had a hat trick and added an assist to lead sixth-seeded North Catholic to a 5-1 victory over No. 4 South Park (15-6-1) in the WPIAL Class 2A girls soccer third-place match Thursday night.

Kathleen Virostek had a goal and an assist and Sara Zagrocki also scored for North Catholic (16-4), which claimed the WPIAL’s third and final spot in the state playoffs.

Mars 1, Plum 0 (OT) – Sixth-seeded Mars (18-3) broke a scoreless tie with the winning goal in overtime, defeating No. 4 Plum (17-3) in the Class 3A third-place match to claim the WPIAL’s final spot in the PIAA bracket.

Seton LaSalle 2, Sewickley Academy 0 – Brynlee Robinson and Sydney Morgan scored and Regan Mazur recorded the shutout as No. 2 Seton LaSalle (15-3-2) defeated No. 5 Sewickley Academy (13-5-1) in the Class 2A third-place game to advance to the PIAA tournament. Anna Porter assisted both goals for the Rebels.

Boys soccer

Eden Christian 1, Beaver County Christian 0 – Seventh-seeded Eden Christian (11-7-2) defeated No. 4 Beaver County Christian (15-5) in the Class A third-place match to secure the third and final WPIAL spot in the state tournament.

Girls volleyball

Eden Christian 3, St. Joseph 0 – Second-seeded Eden Christian (21-3) swept to a 25-13, 25-16, 25-15 victory in the WPIAL Class A third-place game, earning the district’s final berth in the state playoffs and ending the season for fourth-seeded St. Joseph (17-5).

Neshannock 3, Southmoreland 0 – Second-seeded Neshannock (16-2) swept No. 5 Southmoreland (16-5) in the WPIAL Class 2A third-place game, 25-7, 25-20, 25-16. Both teams qualify for the state tournament, the Lancers as the third seed and the Scotties as the fourth seed.

Hockey

Avonworth 9, Richland 0 – Connor Ralston had three goals and an assist and Jimmy Shields followed with two goals and an assist to lead Avonworth (3-2) past Richland (0-5) in Class A. Linus Jesionowski scored twice and Randy Bevan had a goal and an assist for Avonworth.

Burrell 3, Elizabeth Forward 2 – Jacob Rose, Ryan Burkett and Mike Morazcyzk scored and Kooper Price made 20 saves to lead Burrell (5-0) in a matchup of top teams in Division 2. Bobby Boord Jr. scored twice for Elizabeth Forward (4-2).

Central Catholic 5, Peters Township 3 – Cain Phillip, Jay Donahue and Nate Morgan each had a goal and an assist for Central Catholic (3-2-2) in a Class 3A win. Nicholas Caputo had a goal and an assist for Peters Township (1-4-1).

Greensburg Salem 3, Westmont Hilltop 2 (OT) – Ace Klingensmith scored the game-winning goal 1:27 into overtime to lead Greensburg Salem (1-3) to a Class A victory. Nathan Ross and Jeremiah Faulk also scored for Greensburg Salem. Connor Jones and Brett Hoffman scored for Westmont Hilltop (0-4-1).

Ringgold 4, Trinity 3 (OT) – Anthony Bonari scored the winning goal 21 seconds into overtime, Caden Doran had a pair of goals and Bonito Pesi also scored in a Division 2 win for Ringgold (2-1-1). Kory Taylor had a goal and an assist for Trinity (1-4-1).

Seneca Valley 4, Thomas Jefferson 2 – Andrew Malichky had a goal and an assist and Jameson Halin, Braden Morin and Owen Martin also scored for Seneca Valley (4-0) in Class 3A. Derek Schliebner had a goal and an assist and Emery Molnar also scored for Thomas Jefferson (3-2).

Shaler 7, Kiski 0 – Chase Irwin had a goal and four assists and Jacob Skerlong scored twice to lead Shaler (6-0) past Kiski (0-3) in Class A. Darius Malecki and Blake Whiteman each added a goal and two assists, Dylan Marsden and Bradyn Whiteman had a goal and an assist and Jackson Fox made 21 saves to earn the shutout.

Upper St. Clair 4, South Fayette 3 (OT) – Luke Fisher scored the game winner two minutes into overtime, Ryan Buonomo and Drew Lisak each had a goal and an assist and Owen Mucho also scored for Upper St. Clair (3-2-1) in a Class 3A win. Nathaniel Keller scored twice and Robert Chiappetta added a goal and an assist for South Fayette (2-3-1).

West Allegheny 4, Butler 3 (SO) – John Wineland had a goal, an assist and the only successful attempt in the shootout to lead West Allegheny (3-2) to a Class A win. Chase Noel scored twice and Cole Milburn had two assists for West A. Mason Huey scored the tying goal with 5:10 left for Butler (2-3-1). Lucus Hensler and Brayden Hardsock also scored and Anthony Trombatt had three assists for Butler.
