High school roundup for Oct. 7, 2023: Zack Schrockman boosts Burgettstown past OLSH

Zack Schrockman’s second touchdown of the game, a 2-yard TD run with 5:21 to play, powered Burgettstown to a 19-13 victory over OLSH in a Class A Black Hills Conference game Saturday.

Schrockman also scored on a 71-yard punt return in the second quarter for the Blue Devils (3-3, 2-2). He set up Burgettstown’s first touchdown, a 5-yard run by Brodie Kuzior, with a 32-yard reverse pass to Jake McNabb.

Brandon Brazell had a 1-yard touchdown run and a 16-yard TD pass to Dorrien Tate for the Chargers (3-4, 2-2).

Burgettstown sealed the game when Daniel Smith intercepted a pass with 1:48 to play.

Tate was injured on the play, lying motionless on the turf before he was taken off the field in an ambulance. According to a post shared by OLSH football’s Facebook account later in the day, Tate was awake, alert and moving his extremities.

Riverview 40, Summit Academy 18 — Carlo Buzzatto rushed for 202 yards and two touchdowns to lead Riverview (4-3) to the nonconference win against Summit Academy (0-7). Buzzatto has rushed for 1,020 yards this season. Rocco Cecere threw for 112 yards and two touchdowns — both to Alex Schultheis. Schultheis caught three passes for 82 yards. Kye’mre Robinson scored on an interception return and TD catch for Summit.

Western Beaver 53, Riverside 0 — Tyson Florence ran for 92 yards and two touchdowns, caught two passes for 108 yards and a TD and returned the opening kickoff of the second half 76 yards for another score to lead Western Beaver (4-3, 3-1) to a Class 2A Midwestern Athletic Conference win over Riverside (0-6, 0-4). Jaivin Peel threw for 220 yards and three touchdowns while Mike Crawford caught four passes for 113 yards and a TD.

Boys soccer

Charleroi 3, Elizabeth Forward 0 — Nate Mazon recorded 12 saves as Charleroi (15-0) shut out Elizabeth Forward (7-5-1) in a nonsection game. Landon Barcus had one goal and one assist.

Plum 3, Shady Side Academy 1 – Gage Adinolfi, Zach Mauro and Tristin Ralph scored for Plum (15-1) in a nonsection win over Shady Side Academy (10-3).

Trinity Christian 6, Greensburg Central Catholic 1 — Luke Kost scored three goals to lead Trinity Christian (7-4) the nonsection win against Greensburg Central Catholic (6-8). Grant Brewer scored for the Centurions.

Girls soccer

Montour 8, Central Valley 0 — Grace Bannon had two goals as Montour (9-2-3) shut out Central Valley (4-9-1) in nonsection play.

Plum 3, Burrell 0 — Ava Weleski and Rayla Smith tallied one goal and one assist each as Plum (12-0-1) beat Burrell (10-4) in a nonsection contest. Goalkeepers McKenna Anderson and Malayna Smith shared the shutout.

Shaler 8, Hempfield 0 – Lexi Tylenda had a hat trick to lead Shaler (6-7) to a nonsection victory over Hempfield (1-13).

Cross country

Bald Eagle Invitational – Mt. Lebanon teammates Logan St. John Kletter and Caroline Adams finished 1-2 in the girls Class 3A race at White Oak Park. Norwin girls won the team title, however, with four finishers in the top 10. In Class 2A, Woodland Hills’ Annabel Johnson was the top finishers and Freeport took the team title. In Class A, Gianna Mosca finished first to lead OLSH to top team honors.

On the boys side, Eli DeSimone and Charlie Routledge finished 1-2 to lead Winchester Thurston to the Class A team title. In Class 3A, Gateway’s Kefimba Cisse was the top finisher and Norwin the top team. In Class 2A, Elizabeth Forward’s Patrick Burgos finished first and Quaker Valley took the team title.

Grove City Invitational – Hampton’s Dale Hall finished one second ahead of Grove City’s MJ Pottinger to win the boys championship. Christopher Belch (5th) and Jacob Bonnar (9th) also placed in the top for the Talbots, who finished second to Grove City in the team standings.

In the girls race, Knoch’s Ava Santora led the WPIAL contingent, finishing second behind Grove City’s Josie Jones. Hampton’s Kevyn Fish was third to lead the Talbots to first place in the team standings.
