High school roundup for Oct. 9, 2018: No. 1 Quaker Valley boys edge No. 3 North Catholic

The Quaker Valley boys soccer team earned the 24 th section title in program history Tuesday night after defeating No. 3-ranked North Catholic, 2-1, in a Section 4-2A game.

Dom Reiter and Pierce Diggins scored for the top-ranked Quakers (12-3, 10-0), who swept the season series against the Trojans (10-3, 9-2).

Franky Fernandez and Will Andrews had assists for the Quakers, who have won 12 straight games.

Blackhawk 1, West Allegheny 0 — Blackhawk (10-2-2, 7-2-2) dealt top-ranked West Allegheny (15-1, 10-1) its first loss of the season in a Section 2-3A match.

Thomas Jefferson 1, Keystone Oaks 0 — AJ Meshanko scored from 30 yards out to give Thomas Jefferson (10-4-1) a nonsection victory over Class AA No. 5-ranked Keystone Oaks (12-1). Justin Finnegan had the assist, and Jack Wessel posted the shutout.

North Allegheny 8, Shaler 1 — Luke Anderson had three goals and Will Cinker had two as No. 4 North Allegheny (10-4, 8-4) won in Section 1-4A.

South Park 3, East Allegheny 1 — Nate Kacey, Jeff Remark and Joe Irwin scored as South Park (10-4-1, 9-2) won a Section 1-2A game.

Shady Side Academy 9, Valley 0 — Walter Navid had three goals as Shady Side Academy (8-4-1, 8-3-1) won a Section 2-2A game.

Serra Catholic 6, St. Joseph 5 (2OT) — In Section 2-A, Chris Salemi had two goals and Jimmy Moon had five assists to help Serra Catholic (7-4, 4-4) earn a victory.

Carlynton 9, Aquinas Academy 0 — Wajud Adebiyi had four goals for Carlynton (8-5-1, 5-4-1) in a Section 3-A win.

Chartiers-Houston 5, California 1 — Chris Rethage scored twice to lead Chartiers-Houston (6-9-2, 3-7-1) to a Section 4-A victory.

Belle Vernon 4, Greensburg Salem 2 — Markello Apodiakos had a hat trick to lead Belle Vernon to a Section 3-3A victory.

The Leopards (9-5-1, 6-3-1) snapped a four-game losing streak and moved into third place in the section standings.

Daniel Sassak and Josh Klueber scored for Greensburg Salem (7-7, 6-5), which fell to fourth in Section 3.

Latrobe 6, Woodland Hills 1 — Matt Henderson and Luca Diianni each scored twice as Latrobe (8-6-1, 8-5) won in Section 3-4A.

Norwin 6, Connellsville 1 — Zach Ullum scored twice, and Gage Nicholls, Ian Brown, Carter Breen and Matt Federovich added goals as No. 2 Norwin (13-1-1, 11-0-1) won a Section 3-4A game.

Penn-Trafford 5, Penn Hills 0 — Penn-Trafford improved to 8-7-1 overall and 8-4-1 in Section 3-4A with a shutout over Penn Hills (2-13, 1-10).

Franklin Regional 12, McKeesport 0 — Auston Kranick, Joseph Bonfiglio and Zach Johnston all had two goals to guide No. 2 Franklin Regional (12-0-1, 11-0-1) to a Section 4-3A victory.

Brownsville 2, Southmoreland 1 — Nick Climes and Eli Ruffcorn scored to lead Brownsville (5-7, 4-6) to a Section 3-2A win. Brett Glowacki scored on an assist by Brandon Mehall for Southmoreland (7-7, 7-4).

Jeannette 3, Geibel 0 — Nyzaiah Friscarella scored twice, and Calvin Coffman added a goal as Jeannette (1-7, 1-7) won in Section 2-A. Logan Wright posted the shutout.

Greensburg Central Catholic 4, Winchester Thurston 1 — Luke Mort scored twice, and Rico Ciccarelli and Ryan Reitler added goals for No. 1 Greensburg Central Catholic (11-1, 10-0) in a Section 2-A win.

Freeport 6, Burrell 2 — Hunter Hardin and Stevie Teorsky scored two goals apiece, giving Freeport a Section 2-AA win to clinch a playoff berth. Tanner Hoscheid and Addison Stewart added goals for the Yellowjackets (8-8, 6-5), who avenged an earlier 4-1 loss to Burrell.

Jacob Guerrini had a goal and an assist to lead Burrell (4-7-2, 4-6), and Lane Seskey also scored.

Burrell goalkeeper Dom Ferra was transported by ambulance to a local hospital after taking a knee to the head on a collision in the box. He had feeling in all extremities, and no further information on his injury was available Tuesday.

Kiski Area 2, Highlands 0 — Greg Paes scored the eventual game-winner off a free kick with 10 minutes remaining in the first half as Kiski Area clinched a WPIAL playoff berth by shutting out rival Highlands in a Section 1-AAA matchup. Jake Kalik added an insurance goal in the second half, and goalkeeper Nicholas Smith had two saves for Kiski Area (8-6-1, 7-5). Gabe Anthony had four saves for Highlands (5-10, 4-8).

Riverview 6, Eden Christian 2 — Riverview spotted Eden Christian (5-5-1, 3-5-1) an early goal before charging back with four first-half goals as it rolled past the Warriors in a Section 3-A matchup. Joey Flanick scored a hat trick and Christoph Hudack scored a pair of goals for Riverview (4-8, 3-7). Jacob Sulivan tallied four assists and goalkeeper Mark McClellan had seven saves.

Plum 8, Hempfield 1 — Jordan Floyd tallied a hat trick, and Tyler Kolankowski added five helpers as the Mustangs (9-6, 8-5) rolled past the Spartans (3-11, 3-10) in Section 3-4A play. Luke Kolankowski, Darius Flowers, Luke Zezza, AJ Koma and Luke Gildea found the back of the net for Plum. Will Miller made five saves in net.

Serra Catholic 6, St. Joseph 5 (2 OT) — Behind four goals by Daniel Fábregas, St. Joseph rallied from a four-goal first-half deficit to force overtime, but Serra Catholic scored midway through the second extra frame to secure a Section 2-A win. Eli Swierczewski had a goal for the Spartans (6-10, 5-7). Fábregas, Andrew Sullivan and Dominic Ferrante had assists. Chris Salemi scored twice for the Eagles (6-4, 3-4), and Jimmy Moon registered five assists.

Girls soccer

Norwin 6, Penn Hills 0 — Kiana Francis scored twice, and Lexi Gray, Lacey Bernick, Katelyn Kauffman and Marissa Boyer also scored to guide No. 1 Norwin (13-1, 11-0) to a Section 3-4A win.

Brownsville 9, Derry 1 — Derry fell to 1-12 overall and 1-10 in Section 3-2A after a loss to Brownsville (9-4, 7-4).

Greensburg Central Catholic 1, Springdale 0 — Brenna Springer scored to lift No. 3 Greensburg Central Catholic (6-2, 6-1) to a Section 1-A victory.

Shady Side Academy 13, Jeannette 0 — Krystyna Rytel, Callie Davis and Nina Singh all scored twice as No. 2 Shady Side Academy (8-1, 7-1) beat Jeannette (1-8, 0-7) in Section 1-A.

Ligonier Valley 4, United 1 — Mia Lynn had three goals to lead Ligonier Valley (5-7-1, 3-0) to a District 6 Heritage Conference triumph.

Girls volleyball

Deer Lakes 3, Burrell 0 — Kaylee Sciubba had nine kills and seven digs to help Deer Lakes (7-5, 7-3) sweep Burrell (6-4) on senior night. Renee Robson had 19 assists for the Lancers and Desiree Hamilton had six kills.

Freeport 3, East Allegheny 0 — Mackenzie Jack tallied 18 service points, including three aces, and four kills as No. 1 Freeport blanked East Allegheny (2-8, 2-8) in a Section 5-AA matchup. Lauren Lampus finished with 12 service points and six kills, and Ally DeJidas added 11 service points and six kills to lead Freeport (11-1, 10-0).

Knoch 3, Mars 0 — Kerrie Fitzpatrick tallied 15 service points and 25 assists, and Skylar Burkett added 10 kills and 14 digs as Class AAA No. 1 Knoch (13-0, 11-0) rolled past Section 4 rival Mars in straight sets.

Leechburg 3, Trinity Christian 1 — Trinity Christian (7-5, 7-3) took the first set before Leechburg rallied back with three straight as the Blue Devils downed the Falcons to grab sole possession of second place in Section 4-A. Brenna Callahan tallied 15 kills and two aces, Gracie Reinke added 14 kills and six aces, and Sami Bigenho finished with 31 assists and 16 service points for Leechburg (9-3, 8-3).

Fox Chapel 3, North Hills 1 — The Foxes (5-7, 3-7) got 14 kills apiece from Meredith Kenney and Jessie Michel in a Section 1-4A victory. The win snapped a six-match losing streak in section play.
