High school roundup for Sept. 11, 2023: South Park gets past Shady Side Academy in section showdown

Alicia Riberich scored the winning goal to lead South Park (4-1, 2-0) to a 1-0 victory over Shady Side Academy (3-2, 1-1) in a matchup of Section 4-2A girls soccer contenders Monday night.
Avonworth 5, Beaver 2 – Fiona Mahan had two goals and an assist and Gianna Babusci also scored twice to lead Avonworth (6-0-1, 4-0) past Beaver (2-2, 1-2) in Section 1-2A. Minah Syam added a goal and Emma Luther had three assists for the Antelopes.
Belle Vernon 5, Albert Gallatin 0 – Ava Scalise had three goals and an assist and Kataira Rhodes added a goal and two assists to lead Belle Vernon (2-4, 1-3) past Albert Gallatin (1-5, 0-4) in Section 2-3A. Chessa Mertz had a goal and an assist and Abby Showman recorded the shutout for the Leopards.
Bentworth 1, Monessen 1 – Samantha Saylor scored the lone goal for Monessen (1-2-1, 0-2-1) in a Section 2-A tie with Bentworth (2-3-1, 1-2-1). Meredith Allender scored for the Bearcats and was assisted by Bella Moyer.
Bethel Park 4, Baldwin 0 – Olivia Kitchen, Callee DalBon and River Hendrych-Bondra scored for Bethel Park (4-2-1, 3-2) in a Section 2-4A win over Baldwin (2-4, 0-4).
Brownsville 8, McGuffey 3 – Lexi Lewandowsky had a hat trick for Brownsville (1-4, 1-1) in a Section 4-2A win over McGuffey (1-3, 0-2).
Burrell 3, Deer Lakes 2 – Tessa Mathabel scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner, to lead Burrell (4-1, 1-1) past Deer Lakes (2-3-2, 0-2) in Section 2-2A. Miley Kariotis also scored for the Bucs.
Butler 2, Allderdice 1 – Kara Lubinsky had a goal and an assist and Leah Deal also scored to lead Butler (3-3, 2-2) past Allderdice (2-2, 2-2) in Section 1-4A. Sydney Patterson recorded an assist for the Golden Tornado.
Chartiers-Houston 2, South Allegheny 1 – Ava Capozzoli and Allison Wingard scored and Amelia Brose had an assist for Chartiers-Houston (6-1, 3-1) in a Section 2-A win over South Allegheny (4-1, 2-1).
Fox Chapel 7, Shaler 1 – Emily McKee had a hat trick to lead Fox Chapel (5-1, 3-1) to a Section 1-4A win over Shaler (2-3, 1-3).
Franklin Regional 2, Greensburg Salem 0 – Allyssa Velasquez and Addy Lacey scored second-half goals and Aris Lamanna picked up the shutout as Franklin Regional (5-1, 3-0) blanked Greensburg Salem (2-4-1, 1-3) in Section 3-3A.
Freeport 8, Apollo-Ridge 2 – Camryn Woods and Samanatha Liput each had a hat trick to lead Freeport (5-0, 3-0) to a Section 2-2A win over Apollo-Ridge (1-2, 1-2). Nia DiSanti and Addyson Kristofik also scored for the Yellowjackets.
Greensburg Central Catholic 7, Seton LaSalle 1 – Riley Kerr netted four goals and Jillian Botti and Jiana Patterson each had a goal and an assist as Greensburg Central Catholic (2-1, 2-1) beat Seton LaSalle (1-3, 0-3) in Section 1-A. Siena Voetsch also scored, Sophia Fisher had two assists and Addison Vacanti added an assist for the Centurions.
Keystone Oaks 2, West Mifflin 1 – Freshmen Braidy Lugaila and Nina DeWeese scored to lift Keystone Oaks (4-2, 2-0) past West Mifflin (2-3, 0-2) in Section 4-2A.
Kiski Area 4, Armstrong 1 – Sophia Hranica scored two goals and Camryn Kunz and Caylyn Kunz added a goal each to lead Kiski Area (3-4, 2-1) past Armstrong (1-4, 1-3) in a Section 1-3A win. Mylea Riggle scored for the River Hawks.
Knoch 6, Slippery Rock 0 – Kam Burtner scored two goals and Macrina Robb had a goal and three assists to lead Knoch (3-2) to a nonsection win over Slippery Rock. Brooke Galcik, Bella Oskin and Gretta Hull also scored for the Knights.
Latrobe 12, Penn Hills 0 – Regan Reilly had a hat trick and Annalyse Bauer and Ava Yurko added two goals apiece for Latrobe (3-1, 2-1) in a Section 3-3A win over Penn Hills (1-4, 0-4).
Mars 1, North Catholic 0 – Rosie Pellegrino scored the winning goal and Kate McEnroe recorded the shutout as Mars (5-0) defeated North Catholic (3-2) in a nonsection match.

Mt. Pleasant 16, Ligonier Valley 0 – Rylin Bugosh and Morgan Gesinski each had a hat trick for Mt. Pleasant (4-2, 2-0) in a Section 3-2A win over Ligonier Valley (0-4, 0-2). Maggie Piper and Riley Gesinski scored two goals apiece for the Vikings.
North Allegheny 9, North Hills 0 – Jadyn Coy had a hat trick to lead North Allegheny (7-0, 4-0) past North Hills (0-5, 0-4) in Section 1-4A.
Oakland Catholic 1, Indiana 0 (OT) – Emma Gompers scored the game-winning goal in overtime for Oakland Catholic (2-3, 2-1) in a Section 1-3A match against Indiana (2-5, 1-3).
Penn-Trafford 1, Gateway 0 – Bella Swartz scored the decisive goal off a corner kick, assisted by Ava Oslosky, and Rease Solomon recorded the shutout as Penn-Trafford (5-1, 2-1) topped Gateway (1-3, 1-3) in Section 3-3A.
Peters Township 2, Norwin 0 – Atleigh Ciprich and Cam Klein scored and Molly Kubistek had the shutout as Peters Township (5-0-1, 3-0-1) blanked Norwin (1-5, 1-3) in Section 2-4A.
Quaker Valley 3, Hopewell 1 – Annabel Miko scored two goals and Mia Modrovich had one to lead Quaker Valley (4-1, 2-1) past Hopewell (0-4, 0-4) in a Section 1-2A win.
Riverview 11, Steel Valley 1 – Lola Abraham scored four times and Cailey Trosch had a hat trick as Riverview (4-1, 3-1) cruised to a Section 1-A win over Steel Valley (1-7, 1-2). Mary Quinlan added a pair of goals and assists and Lily Hood had a goal and four assists.
Springdale 10, Serra Catholic 0 – Briana Ross had four goals and an assist, Molly Hurley added a goal and two assists, and Ariana Feizi collected a goal and an assist for Springdale (4-0, 3-0) in a Section 1-A win over Serra Catholic (2-2, 2-2). Makayla Haus, Ashley Ross, Charli McClafferty and Lacey Shondeck also scored.
Southmoreland 3, Yough 0 – Aubrey Seder scored two goals and Hannah Conn added a goal for Southmoreland (3-2, 2-0) in a Section 3-2A win over Yough (2-4, 1-1).
Thomas Jefferson 4, Laurel Highlands 1 – Cece Wessel had a pair of goals for Thomas Jefferson (4-1, 3-0) in a Section 2-3A win over Laurel Highlands (4-2, 3-1). Sami Maglicco and Natalie Lamenza added a goal each for the Jaguars.
Upper St. Clair 2, Canon-McMillan 0 – Helena Walker and Natalia DiSora scored and Cam Friday recorded her sixth straight shutout to start the season as Upper St. Claur (6-0, 4-0) blanked Canon-McMillan (2-3-1, 2-1-1) in Section 2-4A. The Panthers played down a player from the 20-minute mark on due to a red card.
Waynesburg 5, Beth-Center 1 – Ella Miller and Rylei Rastoka scored two goals apiece to lead Waynesburg (4-2, 2-2) past Beth-Center (1-4, 0-3) in Section 2-A. Lake Litwinovich also scored, Ella Miller collected three assists, and Rylei Rastoka added an assist for the Raiders.
West Allegheny 5, Trinity 0 – Chloe Hart had two goals and two assists and Ella Smith, Melina King and Kylie Holtz each scored a goal for West Allegheny (4-3, 2-2) in a Section 4-3A win over Trinity (0-5, 0-3).
Woodland Hills 8, East Allegheny 0 – Emma Reyes scored four goals to lead Woodland Hills (2-1, 1-1) to a Section 3-2A win over East Allegheny (0-3, 0-2).
Boys soccer
Carlynton 8, Bishop Canevin 3 – Mateo Carrasco and Hamza Alezzo each had a hat trick to lead Carlynton (4-2, 2-1) past Bishop Canevin (2-4, 1-2) in a Section 4-A win. Wilson Choate and Diego Tuapante scored for the Cougars.
Connellsville 2, Mt. Pleasant 1 (OT) – Bobby Malory scored the game-winning goal in overtime for Connellsville (3-4) in a nonsection win over Mt. Pleasant (4-1). Dylan Shallenberger also scored for the Falcons. Luke Domasky scored for the Vikings.
Hampton 4, Knoch 1 – Luke Fiscus and Xavier Ware scored two goals apiece to lead Hampton (5-1-1) to a nonsection win. Evan Haas scored for Knoch (3-4).
Field hockey
Pine-Richland 12, Norwin 0 – Georgia Rottinghaus had three goals and three assists and Madeline Mill scored three goals and had an assist for Pine-Richland in a Section 3A win over Norwin. Jessica Albertson and Khushi Saini scored two goals apiece for the Rams.
Girls volleyball
Freeport 3, Armstrong 0 – Josie Russo had 10 kills, five blocks and 13 service points to lead Freeport to a nonsection win. Alaina Whitlinger had 11 kills and 12 service points, Ruby Furer added 22 digs and 21 service points, Leah Schreckengost continuted nine kills, and Sydney Selker had 10 kills.
Southmoreland 3, Yough 0 – Taylor Doppelheuer had 12 kills and four blocks to lead Southmoreland to a Section 3-2A sweep. Kaylee Doppelheuer added nine kills and Makayla Etling and Ainsley Martin each had nine digs.
Ligonier Valley 3, Greater Johnstown 2 — Lacy Sosko and Alexa Harding each had 12 kills to lead Ligonier Valley to a marathon 22-25, 33-31, 22-25, 25-16, 15-7 nonsection victory. Emily Rankin had 17 service points and six kills, Morgan Smith added 20 digs, and Tyler Monticue had six kills and 16 assists for the Rams.
