High school roundup for Sept. 15, 2025: North Catholic wins key section matchup

Simone Sharpless had two goals and an assist to lead North Catholic to a 3-0 victory over Shady Side Academy (3-3, 2-2) in Section 2-2A girls soccer Monday. Megan Heinbach also scored for North Catholic (6-3, 2-2).
Avonworth 4, Ambridge 2 – Megan Obersteiner had a goal and an assist, Reese Berad, Nina Babusci and Sylvie Smith also scored and Keda Grieco had two assists to lead Avonworth (6-4, 3-2) to a Section 3-2A victory. Mikalah Wetzel and Kat Benkowski scored for Ambridge (2-5, 0-4).
Belle Vernon 8, Charleroi 0 – Courtney Martin had two goals and an assist, Ali Watson also scored twice and Rory Bastedo earned the shutout for Belle Vernon (6-2-1, 4-1-1) in a Section 1-2A win over Charleroi (0-7, 0-5). Kelsey Roskovich, Jordyn McDowell and Saylor Lee each had a goal and an assist for the Leopards.
Bentworth 1, Beth-Center 0 – Brielle Dillon scored off an assist from Bella Moyer for Bentworth (7-1-1, 4-0) in a Section 2-A win over Beth-Center (4-3, 1-3).
Blackhawk 4, Bethel Park 0 – Lexi Glenhorn scored two goals and Taylor Symmonds and Lily Waterson added a goal apiece to lead Blackhawk (1-3-2, 1-2-2) to a Section 2-3A win over Bethel Park (1-7, 1-5).
Butler 2, Allderdice 0 – Cecelia Wolford scored both goals for Butler (4-3-1) in a nonsection win over Allderdice (6-3). Lucia Leylan and Ava Soley each had an assist for the Golden Tornado.
Central Valley 7, Hopewell 1 – Aubrey Grater and Gianna Gasperine scored two goals apiece for Central Valley (4-1-1, 3-0-1) in a Section 3-2A win over Hopewell (0-6, 0-4). Gia Guandolo, Reagan Patten and Nina Guandolo also scored for the Warriors.
Chartiers-Houston 13, California 0 – Grace Littlecott scored five goals, Ali Wingard added four and Nana Bimpong had two, leading Chartiers-Houston (4-1-1, 2-1-1) past California (1-5, 0-4) in Section 2-A. Lilly Camden and Cecilia Hess scored and Adrianna Rozzo recorded the shutout.
Deer Lakes 10, East Allegheny 0 – Cadence Drum and Kaylea Detar each had a hat trick for Deer Lakes (8-1, 3-1) in a Section 4-2A win over East Allegheny (0-5, 0-4). Sophia Blair, Shannon Drum, Macy Plummer and Capri Bogan also scored for the Cougars.
Fox Chapel 5, Gateway 1 – Emily McKee scored two goals for Fox Chapel (7-1, 5-0) in a Section 1-3A win over Gateway (2-5, 1-3).
Franklin Regional 4, Elizabeth Forward 0 – Allyssa Velasquez netted a pair of goals, Reese Regelski and Ella Copeland also scored and Addison Ayres recorded her seventh shutout of the season as Franklin Regional (7-2, 4-1) blanked Elizabeth Forward (3-3, 3-3) in Section 4-3A.
Freedom 7, Eden Christian 1 – Brianne Casto and Jordyn Moehrle scored two goals apiece to power Freedom (3-3, 3-1) past Eden Christian (3-5, 3-2) in Section 1-A. Sophia Bruce, Payton Henry and Ashlynn Wagner also scored for the Bulldogs.
Greensburg Salem 3, West Mifflin 2 (2OT) – Madison Carr scored the game-winning goal in double overtime to push Greensburg Salem (3-5, 2-3) past West Mifflin (2-6, 0-5) in Section 4-3A. Madalyn Steel and Emily Smith scored the other two goals for the Golden Lions. Caroline Chelosky had both goals for West Mifflin.
Keystone Oaks 8, Steel Valley 2 – Ally Simon scored four goals as Keystone Oaks (5-5, 4-1) defeated Steel Valley (0-6, 0-4) in Section 1-2A. Bella Bishof scored twice, while Braidy Lugalia and Nevaeh Hamilton each had one for the Golden Eagles.
Latrobe 8, Armstrong 0 – Annalyse Bauer scored four goals to become Latrobe’s all-time leading scorer with 62 career goals, one more than Robin Reilly, leading the Wildcats (2-5, 2-1) past Armstrong (3-3-1, 2-2) in Section 1-4A. Emerson Shine had a hat trick, Geli Dent also scored and Gianna Trunzo was in net for the shutout for Latrobe.
Mars 7, Penn Hills 0 – Jade Breese had a hat trick, Miley Gratton followed with two goals and Addison Jacoby and Katie Blake added a goal apiece to lead Mars (6-2, 3-2) to a Section 1-3A win over Penn Hills (1-6, 0-4).
Mohawk 10, South Side 4 – Ila Self scored a hat trick and Audrey Whippo and Laura McKinney each netted two goals as Mohawk (2-4, 1-3) defeated South Side (0-5, 0-4) in Section 1-A. Amara Allen, Audrina Cox and Mackenzie Miller each contributed a goal for the Warriors.
Montour 5, Trinity 0 – Irelynn Hobbs had a hat trick and Uma Hahn and Vanessa Apicella also scored to send Montour (7-1, 5-0) to a Section 2-3A win over Trinity (1-4-2, 0-4-1).
Mt. Pleasant 8, Southmoreland 0 – Morgan Gesinski had a hat trick, Sophia Coppula scored twice and Laurel Rummel recorded the shutout as Mt. Pleasant (6-1-1, 4-0) defeated Southmoreland (3-4-1, 2-2) in Section 4-2A. Camryn Kapr, Brooklyn Ulery and Jaden Kantorik also scored.
Oakland Catholic 7, Uniontown 0 – Emma Gompers netted four goals, Avianna Gibbs scored twice and Caitlin Ivy added a goal to send Oakland Catholic (4-4, 2-2) to a Section 3-3A victory over Uniontown (0-7, 0-4).
Peters Township 2, Mt. Lebanon 0 – Marina Hajnosz had a goal and an assist and Brynn Busch also scored to help Peters Township (6-0-2, 4-0) past Mt. Lebanon (6-2, 3-1) in a matchup of top teams in Section 2-4A.
Pine-Richland 7, North Hills 0 – Seven players scored goals and Amelia Van Meter and Langdon Ott combined on the shutout to lead Pine-Richland (7-1-1, 2-1-1) past North Hills (2-5-1, 0-2-1) in Section 3-4A. Goal scorers were Lily Rosenwasser, Lily DeJesus, Emme Kline, Molly Baker, Aubree Bennett, Charlie Kline and Kendall Hughey.
Plum 8, Indiana 0 – Ali Joyce had a hat trick, Emily Grubich scored two goals and Gianna Revetta, Addison French and Carley Campbell added a goal apiece to lead Plum (6-0, 5-0) to a Section 4-3A win over Indiana (1-7, 1-4). Malayna Smith,Sophia Robinson and Lily Deluca combined on the shutout.
Quaker Valley 4, Beaver 0 – Rowan Wallace scored twice, Annabel Miko and Lily Baker each had a goal and an assist and Ava Hajok preserved the shutout as Quaker Valley (7-1, 4-0) blanked Beaver (5-5-1, 2-2-1) in Section 3-2A.
Seneca Valley 2, North Allegheny 0 – Karly Majeski and Anna Iaquinta scored to send Seneca Valley (5-1-2, 3-0) past North Allegheny (6-2-2, 1-1-1) in Section 3-4A.
Serra Catholic 5, South Allegheny 1 – Bella Dumbroski had a hat trick and Milena Poziviak and Brianna Angell added a goal apiece to lead Serra Catholic (4-3, 2-3) past South Allegheny (1-7, 0-5) in a Section 3-A win.
Seton LaSalle 16, Carrick 0 – Sydney Morgan scored a hat trick and added an assist, Bella Stemple had two goals and an assist and Lila Pahel and Amya Coleman also scored twice to help Seton LaSalle (6-2) to a nonsection win. Kennedy Bakota and Torri Carter each had a goal and two assists, Karina Cruz and Lucy Brown finished with a goal and an assist apiece, Jane Kilmer, Mia Madden and Alexandria Heh also scored and Maurah Hoyt recorded the shutout.
South Fayette 5, Thomas Jefferson 0 – Lily Chiappetta scored twice, Mia Deramo had a goal and two assists and Caitlyn Thompson and Lainey Kuglar combined on the shutout for South Fayette (6-1-1, 4-0) in a win over Thomas Jefferson (5-4, 3-1) in a matchup of top teams in Section 3-3A. Silvanna Rossi and Lyla Tarin also scored for the Lions.
South Park 9, McGuffey 1 – Arianna Beck had a hat trick, Reese Recker and Avery Rispoli followed with two goals and Aubrey Tabak and Gabriella Bonacci added a goal apiece to lead South Park (9-0, 5-0) to a Section 1-2A win over McGuffey (3-4, 2-3).
Upper St. Clair 6, Connellsville 1 – Avery Bayer scored a hat trick and Abby Mascaro dished out three assists to lead Upper St. Clair (5-1-2, 2-1-1) past Connellsville (3-4-1, 1-3) in Section 2-4A. Mary Mascaro, Callie Roberts and Angie Stein also scored for the Panthers.
Winchester Thurston 8, Greensburg Central Catholic 0 – Iris Jarrin scored a hat trick, Jesse Kaufmann and Chengxi Tao added two goals each and Nancy Cao also had a goal to lead Winchester Thurston (5-3-1, 2-1-1) to a Section 4-A win over Greensburg Central Catholic (1-2, 1-2).
Yough 12, Ligonier Valley 0 – Daisy Miller, Leah Slavick and Gionna Piontka scored two goals apiece to power Yough (4-4, 4-1) past Ligonier Valley (1-7, 0-4) in Section 4-2A. Addison Watkins, Mya Broadwater, Britany Baumeister, Kate Slavick, Carly Fitzgibbons and Mya Kuttler also scored for the Cougars.
Boys soccer
Bentworth 6, Charleroi 1 – Ryan Moessner and Adam Moessner each had a hat trick and Blake Lusk and Billy Moyer finished with two assists apiece as Bentworth (8-0) picked up a nonsection win. Otis McIntyre scored for Charleroi (5-2).
Elizabeth Forward 2, Baldwin 1 – Luca Valerio had a goal and an assist and Tucker Ritchie-McCune also scored to lead Elizabeth Forward (5-3) to a nonsection win over Baldwin (1-6).
Plum 8, Montour 1 – Austin Kolankowski had a hat trick, Christian Alter added two goals and Caden Zoller had a goal and an assist to lead Plum (7-1-1) to a nonsection win. Cam Johnson and Nick Kovach also scored for the Mustangs. Cam Gallagher scored for Montour (5-5).
Serra Catholic 2, Carrick 1 (OT) – Tyler Graham scored both goals for Serra Catholic (2-5) in a nonsection win over Carrick (1-2).
Girls volleyball
Albert Gallatin 3, Carmichaels 0 – Gabby Penrose had five kills and four aces, Mikayla Shea added four kills, seven digs and three aces and Paityn Goletz had three kills, eight assists, seven aces and five digs to lead Albert Gallatin (1-5) to a nonsection win over Carmichaels (2-6). Gabby DeLorenzo and Riylee Abel each had nine digs.
Bentworth 3, Mapletown 1 – Addison Pysh had 12 kills and Zoie McDonald had 28 assists and six aces for Bentworth (3-4) in a nonsection win. Treslee Weston had eight kills and Rowan Eisiminger had seven kills and five aces for Mapletown (2-3).
Ligonier Valley 3, East Allegheny 0 – Marlee Miller had seven kills, Alli Heffelfinger and Rylee Monticue each added five kills and Abby McCann had four kills and seven assists to lead Ligonier Valley (2-4) to a nonsection win over East Allegheny (1-6).
South Allegheny 3, Elizabeth Forward 0 – Ally Chizmar had nine kills and six aces and Regan McBeth added eight kills to help South Allegheny (5-2) to a nonsection win over Elizabeth Forward (0-6).
Uniontown 3, Turkeyfoot Valley 0 – Ava Livingood had 12 kills, Maggie Campbell handed out 11 assists and Kathleena Orendorff served up five aces to lead Uniontown (4-2) to a nonsetion win.
Boys golf
Section 1-3A – Indiana teammates Drew Brocious and Austin Schawl shot even-par 70 at Glengarry to tie for medalist honors. Indiana and Latrobe had the most WPIAL qualifiers with four each.
Section 2-3A – The Cedarbrook Gold Course got the better of the field with only two players hitting the target score of 81. Belle Vernon’s Jordan Mocello won the section title with a 1-under 71 and teammate Jack Edwards qualified with a 74.
Section 4-3A – Central Catholic teammates Patrick Donahue and Bailey Donahue each shot a 1-over 73 at Meadowink GC to share section medalist honors. Franklin Regional’s Dylan Mauser was a stroke back, followed by Plum teammates Ethan Kemmerer at 74 and Dany Caruso at 75. The Panthers led the way with five WPIAL qualifiers.
Section 1-2A – Freeport’s Ethan Crooks shot an even-par 72 at 3 Lakes GC to take medalist honors by three strokes. Deer Lakes’ Christian Cappetta and Riverview teammates Ian Stempfer and Rex Roberts tied for second at 75. Freeport led the way with five qualifiers.
Section 2-2A – Greensburg Salem’s Luke Sikora shot a 1-over 71 to claim section medalist honors. Beyond that, Hannastown GC proved a tough course to crack with only three other golfers qualifying for the WPIAL tournament: Southmoreland’s Brody Charnesky and Ligonier Valley teammates Tyler Jones and Rocco Harris.
Section 8-2A – Elizabeth Forward’s Aaron Didjunas shot a 3-under 68 at the Cedarbrook Red Course to win medalist honors by a stroke of Shady Side Academy’s Alex Avi. The Warriors and Bulldogs each had a section-best five WPIAL qualifiers.
