High school roundup for Sept. 17, 2024: Peters Township blanks Upper St. Clair in battle for 1st place

Colin Froelich scored a pair of goals to lead Peters Township to a 4-0 victory over Upper St. Clair (4-3-1, 3-1) in a showdown for first place in Section 2-4A boys soccer. Alex Parise and Brett Martin each added a goal and Markus Bizyak recorded the shutout for Peters (7-1-1, 4-0).

Allderdice 3, Latrobe 0 – Ethan Voight-Cherna had two goals, Luke Peña also scored, Jacek Piekut doled out three assists and Josh Kotov recorded the shutout to lead Allderdice (6-1-1, 4-0-1) past Latrobe (6-2, 5-1) in a matchup of top teams in Section 3-3A.

Beaver County Christian 2, Eden Christian 1 – Liam Birchle and Ben Crefeld scored to lead Beaver County Christian (6-2, 3-1) past Eden Christian (5-1-1, 4-0) in Section 1-A.

Bentworth 5, Beth-Center 0 – Adam and Ryan Moessner each scored two goals and Billy Moyer netted a goal and had an assist as Bentworth (8-0, 4-0) defeated Beth-Center (4-2-1, 1-2) in Section 2-A.

Bethel Park 3, Laurel Highlands 0 – Xavier Jackson and Jackson Friday each had a goal and an assist while Ali Jasin added a goal for Bethel Park (5-2, 5-1) in a Section 2-3A win over Laurel Highlands (1-4-2, 1-4-1).

Burrell 2, Highlands 1 (OT) – Billy Kowalkowski scored in the first half and converted a penalty kick in overtime to lead Burrell (3-4, 3-3) to a Section 1-2A win over Highlands (3-4-1, 2-4-1).

Canon-McMillan 10, Connellsville 0 – Adam Kuchera scored four goals, Dante Pasquarelli recorded a hat trick and Roman Pasquarelli, Gabe Fegely and Noah Dirocco each added a goal as Canon-McMillan (4-2-1, 1-2) cruised to a Section 2-4A shutout win over Connellsville (2-7, 0-4).

Central Valley 2, Avonworth 1 – Cameron DeVincentis and Colby Pyrdek scored to lead Central Valley (8-0, 6-0) past Avonworth (6-2, 6-1) in a battle for first place in Section 2-2A.

Charleroi 11, Derry 0 – Dylan Klinger had a hat trick and Blake Pendo added a pair of goals to lead Charleroi (7-0, 6-0) past Derry (2-6, 1-4) in Section 4-2A. Max Goodwin recorded the shutout.

Deer Lakes 6, Freeport 0 – Jake Orseno scored a hat trick, Peyton Kushon added a pair of goals and Zane Spence netted another as Deer Lakes (7-2-1, 5-1) blanked Freeport (4-3-2, 2-2-2) in Section 1-2A. Wes Boyle kept a clean sheet for the Lancers.

Elizabeth Forward 5, Ligonier Valley 2 – Aidan Davis and Carson Ruffing each scored a pair of goals and Ethan Childers netted a goal and had two assists as Elizabeth Forward (6-2-1, 5-0-1) beat Ligonier Valley (5-4, 2-4) in Section 3-2A.

Franklin Regional 5, Belle Vernon 0 – Danny Christafano had a pair of goals and Jovan Sankoorikal, Tim Wagner and Cruise Lamanna also scored for Franklin Regional (5-1, 4-0) in a Section 3-3A win over Belle Vernon (3-4, 1-4).

Gateway 4, Central Catholic 3 (OT) – James LoCoco’s second goal of the game was the overtime winner for Gateway (3-4, 2-2) in a Section 1-4A victory over Central Catholic (1-6-1, 1-3). Cam Simon had a goal and an assist and Troy Boden also scored for the Gators.

Greensburg Central Catholic 11, California 0 – Jackson Vacanti had five goals and an assist to lead Greensburg Central Catholic (2-2-1, 2-1) past California (0-4, 0-3) in Section 2-A. Grant Brewer and Andrew McIntyre each had two goals and an assist, Lucca Denis added a goal and two assists, and William Cryblskey collected a goal and an assist. Isaac House made four saves to complete the shutout.

Mars 2, Knoch 0 – Sean Scanlon and Nick Butler each scored a goal to lead Mars (6-1-2, 4-1-1) to a Section 1-3A win over Knoch (3-5, 3-3).

Moon 3, Chartiers Valley 0 – Fin Dengel had a goal and an assist while Zech Balbach and Aedan Costa each deposited a goal for Moon (9-0, 4-0) in a Section 4-3A shutout win over Chartiers Valley (5-2, 4-2). Will Guarino kept a clean sheet for the Tigers.

Mt. Lebanon 2, Woodland Hills 0 – JT Dorn and Noah Defeo scored for Mt. Lebanon (5-4, 2-2) in a Section 2-4A win over Woodland Hills (4-4, 1-3).

Mt. Pleasant 3, Southmoreland 2 (OT) – Jarrett Garn scored the winning goal with 44 seconds left in the second overtime, assisted by Aydan Gross, to lift Mt. Pleasant (7-2, 6-0) past Southmoreland (5-3, 3-2) in Section 4-2A. Bryson Bankosh and Gavin Rummel also scored for the Vikings.

Neshannock 8, Sewickley Academy 3 – Zayden Herb scored five goals and had two assists, Nick Bender added a goal and three assists and Jordan Kosin and Diego Porras each had a goal and an assist as Neshannock (6-3, 1-3) rolled to a Section 1-A win over Sewickley Academy (3-4, 1-3).

Norwin 2, Penn Hills 0 – Dylan Moyer and Alex Krance scored to power Norwin (6-3, 4-0) past Penn Hills (1-7, 0-4) in Section 1-4A.

Penn-Trafford 11, Uniontown 0 – JJ Porter and Yuriy Bidochko each scored a hat trick and Noah Haslam and Blake Porter had two goals apiece to lead Penn-Trafford (3-3-1, 2-2-1) past Uniontown (1-5, 0-5) in Section 3-3A.

Plum 9, Hempfield 0 – Kent Holmes had two goals, Garrett Chandler dished out three assists and Andy Strasser collected a goal and an assist for Plum (7-0-2, 4-0) in a Section 1-4A win over Hempfield (2-6, 1-3). Austin Kolankowski, Bryce Bobich, Mason Eber, Christian Alter, Zack Carnahan and Marshall Capizza also scored.

Ringgold 3, South Fayette 0 – Nick Evans netted a pair of goals and Izaiah Wilton also scored to power Ringgold (5-1-1, 4-0-1) past South Fayette (3-5, 3-3) in Section 2-3A.

Riverview 5, Jeannette 1 – Chris O’Toole scored four goals and Carter Loughren added a goal to lead Riverview (2-4, 1-3) to a Section 4-A win. McAlister Steele scored for Jeannette (2-5, 1-3).

Serra Catholic 4, Brentwood 3 – Brayden Graham and Luke Perez each scored a pair of goals to lead Serra Catholic (2-7, 2-2) past Brentwood (3-4, 0-4) in Section 3-A. Graham’s second goal broke a 2-2 tie in the second half. Carlos Duran scored twice for Brentwood.

Seton LaSalle 4, South Allegheny 0 – Alex Martinez Berumen, Gavin McMahon, Ty Kovalcik and Darius Norkevicus each scored a goal as Seton LaSalle (6-2, 5-1) shutout South Allegheny (2-6, 1-4) in Section 3-2A.

Shaler 6, Obama Academy 0 – Tyler Shaw scored a pair of goals to lead Shaler (2-5-1, 2-3-1) past Obama Academy (2-5, 0-5) in Section 1-3A. Alex Gaetano, Connor McClean, Anthony Tylenda and Tazanie Hinds each added a goal for the Titans.

Thomas Jefferson 0, Trinity 0 – Goalkeepers Sam Wessel for Thomas Jefferson (4-0-3, 3-0-3) and Ryan Torboli for Trinity (3-2-2, 3-1-1) recorded shutouts in a Section 2-3A draw.

Springdale 2, Trinity Christian 1 – Patrick Wylly and Nathan Dubas each had a goal and an assist to lead Springdale (7-0, 4-0) in a matchup of top teams in Section 4-A. Camron Wright scored for Trinity Christian (4-2-1, 2-1-1).

West Allegheny 3, Blackhawk 1 – Aaron Bouch scored two goals and Owen Kent scored another to lead West Allegheny (4-4, 3-2) past Blackhawk (0-5-1, 0-4-1) in Section 4-3A.

Girls volleyball

Albert Gallatin 3, Elizabeth Forward 0 – Leah Myers had 10 kills and Mia Myers added 15 assists as Albert Gallatin (2-4, 2-3) swept Elizabeth Forward (2-6, 1-3) in Section 3-3A.

Beaver 3, Central Valley 0 – Kailyn Connelly had 12 kills and four aces to lead Beaver (5-3, 3-0) to a Section 4-3A win over Central Valley (2-5, 1-2). Jaedyn Brown added eight kills, Aubrey Bumblis had 13 digs and Zoe Ringer handed out 22 assists.

Canon-McMillan 3, Baldwin 0 – Cali Dagen had 17 digs and 16 kills, Natalie Curr followed with 14 kills and Sophia Powell added 11 digs to lead Canon-McMillan (6-0, 3-0) to a win in Section 2-4A against Baldwin (2-4, 0-3). Carsen Brown put up 21 assists and Brooke Peters added another 19 for the Big Macs.

Chartiers Valley 3, Moon 0 – Emerson Kutschbach had 15 digs and Addison Varnish produced 17 assists for Chartiers Valley (6-0, 5-0) in a Section 1-3A sweep of Moon (3-4, 1-3). Maddie Finnegan had 12 digs and Elina Antoniades finished with 15 assists for the Tigers.

Frazier 3, California 0 – Addison Schultz had 27 digs and nine kills, Maddie Salisbury had 14 service points and Gracen Hartman had 36 assists to lead Frazier (5-2, 3-0) to a Section 4-A win over California (5-2, 2-2).

Hampton 3, Knoch 0 – Lilly Muczinski had 15 assists, 10 digs, nine aces and five kills while Payton Galietti and Marin Katona-Bock each had 10 kills for Hampton (5-2, 2-1) in a Section 2-3A win against Knoch (3-5, 1-2). Katona-Bock added 14 digs, Anabel Fazzini had 10 digs and Kassidy Thompson chipped in with 14 assists for the Talbots.

Mars 3, Valley 0 – Cecilia Christy had 15 kills and Rylee Wooldridge had nine as Mars (5-3, 3-0) swept Valley (1-6, 0-3) in a Section 2-3A matchup. Kate Southwell chipped in with four kills and four aces for the Fightin’ Planets.

South Allegheny 3, Sto-Rox 0 – Madison Taylor and Maura Tabanli each had three kills and seven aces to lead South Allegheny (9-1, 5-0) to a Section 2-2A victory over Sto-Rox (0-7, 0-5).

St. Joseph 3, Springdale 0 – Kate Giannetta had 22 digs and six kills while Kenzie Jones added 14 digs and four aces to lead St. Joseph (7-2, 3-0) to a three set sweep of Springdale (0-5, 0-3) in Section 1-A.

Waynesburg 3, Brownsville 0 – Skyler Gates had 13 kills, Kenzie Adams chipped in with 10 assists and Ashley Evanchak produced 13 digs for Brownsville (1-6, 1-4) in a Section 3-2A loss to Waynesburg (6-0, 5-0).

Girls tennis

Penn-Trafford 4, Norwin 1 – Mia Williams, Elle LeJeune and Annabelle Aquino each pulled out a win in singles while Mya Kochasic and Amanda Wnedler secured a win in first doubles as Penn-Trafford (7-1, 6-1) defeated Norwin (6-3, 4-2) in Section 1-3A.
