High school roundup for Sept. 17, 2025: Moon gets past Montour in tense battle for 1st place

Riley Lafayette scored on a free kick with six minutes left to lift Moon to a 2-1 victory over Montour in a battle for first place in Section 2-3A girls soccer Wednesday night.
Kendall Dydek opened the scoring for the Tigers (7-1, 6-0). Irelynn Hobbs scored for the Spartans (7-2, 5-1).
Ambridge 6, Hopewell 0 – Myriah Smith scored two goals while Mikalah Wetzel, Kate McPherson, Norah Marchionda and Abby Smith each chipped in a goal to lead Ambridge (3-5, 1-4) to a Section 3-2A win over Hopewell (0-7, 0-5). Mallory Smith earned the shutout for the Bridgers.
Beaver 2, Avonworth 0 – Jocelyn Biela and Mia Furda each had a goal and an assist to power Beaver (6-5-1, 3-2-1) past Avonworth (6-5, 3-3) in Section 3-2A. Cali Coups recorded the shutout in goal.
Bentworth 2, Chartiers-Houston 1 – Bella Moyer scored a pair of goals, including a penalty kick, to lead Bentworth (8-1-1, 5-0) to a Section 2-A win over Chartiers-Houston (4-2-1, 2-2-1). Grace Littlecott scored for the Buccaneers.
Burrell 4, Shady Side Academy 0 – Myla Buchak, McKenna Miller, Leah Waldsmith and Kinlee Moore each scored a goal while Casey Brancato kept a clean net as Burrell (5-2-1, 4-1) shut out Shady Side Academy (3-4, 2-3) in Section 2-2A.
Canon-McMillan 6, Connellsville 0 – Audrey Calgaro netted a pair of goals and Paige Masci, Makayla Szykowny, Rachel Tomley and Sarah Coffman also scored to send Canon-McMillan (4-3-1, 2-2-1) past Connellsville (3-5-1, 1-4) in Section 2-4A.
Deer Lakes 4, Southmoreland 0 – Tessa Hollibaugh, Abby Kushon, Kaylea Detar and Bri Simonetti found the net and Mikayla Potter earned the shutout in goal as Deer Lakes (9-1, 4-1) defeated Southmoreland (3-5-1, 2-3) in Section 4-2A.
Franklin Regional 7, West Mifflin 1 – Reese Regelski produced four goals and Allyssa Velasquez added a brace to power Franklin Regional (8-2, 5-1) to a Section 4-3A win against West Mifflin (2-7, 0-6). Ella Copeland added a goal for the Panthers. Abby Jakubovic scored for the Titans.
Freedom 9, South Side 3 – Farisa Roberts, Sophia Bruce and Katelyn VanDeCar netted two goals apiece to lead Freedom (4-3, 4-1) past South Side (0-6, 0-5) in Section 1-A. Brianne Casto, Payton Henry and Alyssa Bearer also scored for the Bulldogs.
Freeport 4, Knoch 0 – Camryn Woods scored twice, Peyton Los added a goal and an assist and Elena Jenkins also scored to lead Freeport (7-1, 5-0) past Knoch (2-7, 1-4) in Section 2-2A. Alyssa Alcorn and Sophia Crawford combined on the shutout.
Highlands 3, Brashear 0 – Jayla Shelton, Natalie Dickerson and Payton Bundy scored and Lily Calligan and Cialie Pentarek combined on the shutout as Highlands (5-3) picked up a nonsection win.
Kiski Area 5, Indiana 0 – Ellie Arnold had a hat trick, Tessa Shaffer and Gretchen Freund also scored and Bria Bires and Emma Brink combined on the shutout for Kiski Area (4-3, 4-2) in a Section 4-3A victory over Indiana (1-8, 1-5).
Latrobe 8, Hempfield 0 – Geli Dent and Annalyse Bauer each scored a hat trick and Emerson Shine added a brace as Latrobe (3-5, 3-2) blanked Hempfield (1-8, 1-4) in Section 1-4A. Gianna Trunzo kept a clean sheet for the Wildcats.
Mars 7, Obama Academy 0 – Jade Breese recorded a hat trick to pace Mars (7-2) in a Section 1-3A exhibition win Obama Academy (2-8). Addison Jacoby, Reese Vuckovich, Liv Halliday and Torrin O’Leary each tallied a goal for the Fightin’ Planets.
North Allegheny 5, Butler 0 – Luciana Zagacki and Kieran Shannon each had two goals, Averie Bierker also scored and Jordan Beemer recorded the shutout for North Allegheny (7-2-2, 2-1-1) in a Section 3-4A win over Butler (4-4-1, 0-3-1).
North Catholic 13, Valley 0 – Simone Sharpless scored four goals, Frankie Liberati had two goals and two assists and Mikaela Canzian also scored twice for North Catholic (7-3, 3-2) in a Section 2-2A win over Valley (0-6, 0-5). Megan Heinbach had a goal and an assist and Reagan Young, Nina Bond, Sara Schollaert and Kaitlyn Phillips also scored.
Penn-Trafford 5, Armstrong 1 – Ellie Lebe had a goal and two assists and Emilie Oslosky added a goal and an assist to power Penn-Trafford (4-3-1, 3-1) past Armstrong (3-4-1, 2-3) in Section 1-4A. Tori Yurt, Ava Oslosky and Aurelia Solomon also scored for the Warriors.
Pine-Richland 3, Allderdice 0 – Lily DeJesus had a goal and an assist, Lexi Hensel and Lily Rosenwasser also scored and Amelia Van Meter preserved the shutout as Pine-Richland (8-1-1) defeated Allderdice (6-4) in a Section 3-4A exhibition.
Plum 7, Greensburg Salem 0 – Emily Grubich scored twice, Gianna Revetta had a goal and two assists and Malayna Smith, Sophia Robinson and Lily Deluca combined on the shutout to lead Plum (7-0, 6-0) past Greensburg Salem (3-6, 2-4) in Section 4-3A. Ali Joyce, Morgan Keller, Keirstin Curry and Allison Porter also scored and Olivia Bigger had two assists.
Quaker Valley 1, Central Valley 0 (OT) – Hope Waller scored on a feed from Annabel Miko in extra time to help Quaker Valley (8-1, 5-0) beat Central Valley (4-2-1, 3-1-1) in Section 3-2A.
Seneca Valley 5, North Hills 0 – Karly Majeski and Izzy Yuhouse scored two goals apiece and Sophia Sipp added another as Seneca Valley (6-1-2, 4-0) shut out North Hills (2-6-1, 0-3-1) in Section 3-4A.
Seton LaSalle 8, South Allegheny 1 – Kennedy Bakota had a hat trick and Brynlee Robinson added a pair of goals to lead Seton LaSalle (7-2, 5-1) past South Allegheny (1-8, 0-6) in Section 3-A. Anna Porter had a goal and three assists, Sydney Morgan collected a goal and two assists and Lila Pahel also scored for the Rebels.
Shaler 3, Gateway 2 (OT) – Addy Paladin had a goal and an assist, Naudia Zotter and Etta Warner also scored and Gabby Alcalde dished out two assists to lead Shaler (6-2-1, 3-2) to a Section 1-3A win over Gateway (2-6, 1-4).
South Fayette 11, Uniontown 0 – Camdyn Johnson and Emma Ferrari paced South Fayette (7-1-1, 5-0) with two goals apiece in a rout of Uniontown (0-8, 0-5) in Section 3-3A. Mia Deramo, Lyla Tarin, Quinn Miller, Gabby Beinecke, Silvi Rossi and Chippy Chiappetta each tallied a goal for the Lions.
South Park 1, Keystone Oaks 0 – Aubrey Tabak scored the decisive goal to lift South Park (10-, 6-0) past Keystone Oaks (5-6, 4-2) in a matchup of top teams in Section 1-2A.
Springdale 6, Greensburg Central Catholic 1 – Shelby DiPalma had two goals and an assist and Hailey Marchlewski dished out three assists to help Springdale (5-0-1, 4-0-1) to a Section 4-A win over Greensburg Central Catholic (1-3, 1-3). Adele Walters-Vrabel, Tessa Derringer, Ariana Caltagarone and Addie Richards also scored for the Dynamos.
Thomas Jefferson 6, Albert Gallatin 0 – Sami Maglicco had a hat trick, Addison Fenlock scored two goals, Natalie Narr added a goal and Nyla Kiral recorded the shutout for Thomas Jefferson (6-4, 4-1) in a Section 3-3A victory over Albert Gallatin (1-7, 1-4).
Waynesburg 12, California 1 – Kolbi Rastoka collected four goals and two assists and Ava DiAlessandro had two goals and an assist to lead Waynesburg (6-2, 3-2) past California (1-6, 0-5) in Section 2-A. Emily Rafferty had a goal and three assists, Rylei Rastoka, Tess Pauley and Serenity Taylor each finished with a goal and two assists and Mia Cole and Addie Cowell also scored.
West Allegheny 2, Blackhawk 1 – Jocelyn Rosborough and Mia Bardelli each scored a goal as West Allegheny (5-5, 4-2) defeated Blackhawk (1-4-2, 1-3-2) in Section 2-3A. Ella Smith and Kassidy Knaus had an assist each for the Indians.
Winchester Thurston 1, Ellis School 0 – Iris Jarrin scored the lone goal of the match to lift Winchester Thurston (6-2-1, 3-1-1) past Ellis School (2-4, 1-4) in Section 4-A.
Boys soccer
Chartiers-Houston 12, California 0 – Ashton Kennedy recorded a hat trick, Cole Bashioum, Shane English and Carter Metler each tallied a pair of goals and Braulio Melena and Bryson Boskovich combined on the shutout as Chartiers-Houston (5-4, 2-2) rolled California (0-4, 0-4) in Section 2-A. Josh Hawkins, Ryan Thomas and Jochua Mayan each added a goal for the Buccaneers.
Keystone Oaks 7, Riverside 0 – Isaiah Labwon had two goals and an assist and Thomas Schultz also scored twice to send Keystone Oaks (3-4, 3-4) to a Section 2-2A win over Riverside (2-6, 2-5). Ermias Berhane and Owen Bosniak each had a goal and an assist for the Golden Eagles.
Field hockey
Latrobe 2, Penn-Trafford 1 – Ryanne Lehman had a goal and an assist and Karter Kubistek also scored to lead Latrobe (3-3-2, 1-3-2) to its first Class 2A victory of the season. Brooke Bauer scored for Penn-Trafford (2-5, 1-4).
Girls volleyball
Mars 3, Knoch 0 – Rylee Wooldridge had 15 kills and 12 digs and Gabi Weidemann finished with 36 assists and 10 digs to lead Mars (7-2, 4-0) to a Section 2-3A win over Knoch (2-5, 1-3). Cecilia Christy had 14 kills, Kate Southwell added 10 kills and Sabrina Ruiz-Gonzalez had 10 digs for the Fightin’ Planets.
Boys golf
Section 7-3A – Fox Chapel’s Carson Kittsley shot a sizzling 6-under 66 at Pheasant Ridge to take section medalist honors. He made an eagle and four birdies in a bogey-free round. Four other Fox Chapel players hit the target score of 82 to qualify for the WPIAL tournament, including second-place Grady Johnston (73) and Reed Gamblin (75), Baron Bitar (76) and David DiGregory (77).
