High school roundup for Sept. 30, 2023: Ethan Gardner scores on offense, defense in OLSH win

Ethan Gardner scored one touchdown on offense and another on defense to lead OLSH to a 20-12 victory over Chartiers-Houston in Class A Black Hills Conference action Saturday night.

Gardner ripped the ball away from a Chartiers-Houston runner and scored on a 55-yard fumble return in the first quarter and gave the Chargers the lead for good with a 14-yard touchdown catch from Dorrien Tate in the second quarter.

Brandon Brazell ran for 106 yards and a touchdown for OLSH (3-3, 2-1).

Chartiers-Houston (0-6, 0-3) scored two defensive touchdowns in the first quarter. Quarterback Aaron Walsh, who threw for 157 yards, ran an interception back 65 yards and lineman Trevor Popeck wrestled a ball away from an OLSH runner and scored on a 10-yard return.

Chartiers Valley 1, Blackhawk 0 – John Krug scored the decisive goal as Chartiers Valley (3-6, 2-4) beat Blackhawk (2-11, 0-10) in a Section 2-3A matchup.

Jeannette 4, Obama Academy 3 — Jared Vincent scored his second goal of the game at 4:38 of the first overtime to give Jeannette (8-5) the nonsection win over Obama Academy (1-10-1). Jordan Taylor had two goals and two assists for Jeannette while goalkeeper Noah Clary made 15 saves.

Moon 3, Central Catholic 1 – Mike Walenchok, Aedan Costa and Davi Jansson found the net for Moon (10-2-1) in a nonsection victory over Central Catholic (5-7).

Norwin 5, Penn Trafford 0 – Daniel Maddock scored twice and Alex Brown had a goal and an assist as Norwin (10-3) defeated Penn-Trafford (4-8-2) in a nonsection match. Owen Christopher and Ian Natale also scored for the Knights.

Riverview 7, Leechburg 0 – Chris O’Toole’s had four goals and an assist to power Riverview (4-7) past Leechburg (0-10) in a nonsection match. Eben Ulrich, Carson Bodnar and Liam Ulrich also scored and Drew Hunter had three assists for the Raiders.

Quaker Valley 1, Thomas Jefferson 0 — Nick Allan scored the game’s only goal off of an assist from Jack Karwoski as Quaker Valley (10-3) shut out Thomas Jefferson (10-2-1) in nonsection play. Quaker Valley snapped Thomas Jefferson’s nine-game unbeaten streak.

Girls soccer

Blackhawk 2, Chartiers Valley 1 – Jaellyn Martin scored the game-winning goal with 10 minutes to play and Piper Romigh also found the net to lead Blackhawk (6-6, 4-4) past Chartiers Valley (3-7, 1-6) in Section 4-3A.

Deer Lakes 2, South Allegheny 0 — Claire Cacurak scored two goals and Brooke Kostyak picked up the clean sheet as Deer Lakes (6-5-2) beat South Allegheny (9-4) in nonsection play.

Gateway 6, Woodland Hills 2 — In nonsection play, Hayden Price scored two goals as Gateway (4-5-1) beat Woodland Hills (4-5). Emma Reyes scored both goals for Woodland Hills.

Knoch 3, Ambridge 1 — Macrina Robb scored two second-half goals to lead Knoch (7-4-2) to the nonsection win over Ambridge (2-8).

Penn-Trafford 3, Norwin 0 — Goalkeeper Rease Solomon recorded seven saves as Penn-Trafford (8-4) shut out Norwin (3-8) in a nonsection matchup. Bella Swartz and Emilie Oslosky had a goal and an assist each and Olivia Weishaar also scored for Penn-Trafford.

Seton LaSalle 7, Jeannette 1 — Seven players had goals for Seton LaSalle (5-4, 3-3) in its Section 1-A win against Jeannette (0-9-1, 0-8). Angelina McGrath, Kendall DeMarino, Anna Porter, Elisabeth Maleski, Catie Kozel, Isabella Stemple and Sydney Morgan scored.

West Allegheny 9, Brashear 0 — Chloe Hart had two goals and an assist as West Allegheny (8-5) beat Brashear in nonsection play. Ella Smith and Melina King added one goal and one assist each.
