High school roundup for Sept. 30, 2024: Burrell girls hand 1st loss to North Catholic

Makiah Buchak, Mikey Kariotis, McKenna Miller and Maggie Nesko scored to lead Burrell to a 4-1 victory in Section 2-2A girls soccer Monday night, handing North Catholic its first loss of the year.
Dana Barczykowski was the winning goalkeeper for the Bucs (9-2-1, 5-2). Laurel Mealie scored for North Catholic (10-1, 5-1).
Allderdice 2, North Hills 0 – Avery Ruffus scored both goals and Hallie Cohen recorded her fourth shutout of the season for Allderdice (4-7, 2-5) in a Section 3-4A win over North Hills (2-10, 0-7).
Belle Vernon 3, Ringgold 0 – Ava Scalise scored a pair of goals and Kelsey Roskovich netted another as Belle Vernon (7-7, 6-3) shut out Ringgold (3-8-1, 2-6-1) in Section 1-2A.
Bentworth 8, California 2 – Bella Moyer scored a pair of goals to pace Bentworth (10-1, 5-1) in a Section 2-A win. Madelyn Johns, Brielle Dillon, Brina Orsatti, Megan Keturakis, Emme Orsatti and Meredith Allender each tallied a goal for the Bearcats. Lauren and Leah Hartley scored for California (3-5-1, 2-3-1). Bentworth clinched a playoff spot for the 14th time in 15 years.
Chartiers-Houston 5, Brownsville 0 – Ali Wingard and Hailey Siege each scored two goals and Nanna Bimpong added another as Chartiers-Houston (8-2, 6-1) blanked Brownsville (0-10-1, 0-6-1) in Section 2-A.
Fox Chapel 9, Obama Academy 1 – Emily McKee scored a pair of goals to help Fox Chapel (12-0-1, 9-0) past Obama Academy (1-9, 0-8) in Section 1-3A.
Franklin Regional 3, Indiana 2 (OT) – Eden Williams’ second goal of the game was the overtime winner and Abby Paterline also scored for Franklin Regional (8-5, 7-2) in a Section 4-3A win. Zoe Drahnak and Sophia Scardina had a goal each for Indiana (3-8-1, 2-5-1).
Freeport 13, Valley 1 – Camryn Woods recorded a hat trick and Nia DiSanti added a pair of goals to lead Freeport (8-1-1) to a Section 2-2A win against Valley (1-8, 0-6). Ella McConville, Sam Liput, Brinley Sullivan, Natalia Urik, CeCe Shlegel, Maggie Conger, Sophia Conger and Elena Jenkins each had a goal for the Yellowjackets.
Greensburg Salem 3, Kiski School 0 – Emily Smith scored a hat trick and Alice Wilkinson and Anna Kovak combined on the shutout to lead Greensburg Salem (4-7) to a nonsection win.
Kiski Area 0, Elizabeth Forward 0 – Goalkeepers Bria Bires of Kiski Area (5-6-1, 5-3-1) and Addison Davis of Elizabeth Forward (3-5-1, 3-4-1) recorded shutouts in a scoreless draw in Section 4-3A.
Latrobe 7, Woodland Hills 0 – Annalyse Bauer scored a hat trick and Emerson Shine and Robin Reilly added two goals each to power Latrobe (6-3-1, 5-2) past Woodland Hills (3-7-1, 2-5) in Section 1-4A.
Moon 1, Bethel Park 0 – Lilly Snyder had the lone goal as Moon (10-1, 9-0) edged Bethel Park (6-4-2, 4-4-1) in Section 2-3A.
Mt. Lebanon 3, Baldwin 1 – Tessa Peer scored twice and Lucy Pryor had a goal for Mt. Lebanon (6-4-1, 2-4) in a Section 2-4A win over Baldwin (5-8, 2-5).
Mt. Pleasant 4, Deer Lakes 0 – Rylin Bugosh scored a pair of goals and Laurel Rummel kept a clean sheet to lead Mt. Pleasant (11-1, 7-0) to a Section 4-2A victory over Deer Lakes (7-3-2, 5-2). Morgan Gesinski and Madelynn Barrick each netted a goal for the Vikings.
Norwin 11, Armstrong 0 – Julia Bursick, Carmella Simco and Ava Acalotto scored two goals apiece to lead Norwin (7-6-1, 5-2) past Armstrong (2-11, 1-6) in Section 1-4A.
Penn-Trafford 3, Hempfield 0 – Alexis Brown scored twice, Miley Curie had a goal and an assist and Rease Solomon preserved the shutout for Penn-Trafford (10-3, 7-0) in a Section 1-4A win over Hempfield (3-10, 1-6).
Peters Township 11, Connellsville 0 – Taylor McCullough, Julia Spergel and Maddy Rost each scored two goals to power Peters Township (11-0-1, 6-0-1) past Connellsville (4-10, 0-7) in Section 2-4A. Bailey Lutz, Ellie Gambill, Lucia Trapanotto, Elliana Hajnosz and Kess Wolfe all netted a goal for Peters.
Plum 8, West Mifflin 0 – Emily Grubich, Olivia Bigger and Olivia Shafer each had two goals, Isla Filo and Allison Porter also scored and Makenna Anderson and Malayna Smith combined on the shutout for Plum (10-1, 9-0) in a Section 4-3A win over West Mifflin (2-8-1, 0-7-1).
Quaker Valley 3, Hopewell 0 – Annabel Miko scored a hat trick, Ari Bosh had two assists, Lila Carver added an assist and Ava Hajok preserved the shutout for Quaker Valley (10-2-1, 6-1) in a Section 3-2A win over Hopewell (1-7-2, 1-6-1).
Seneca Valley 2, Butler 1 – Karly Majeski scored the game-winner with nine minutes left to lift Seneca Valley (9-2-1, 6-0) past Butler (6-7, 2-5) in Section 3-4A. Cassie Leonard scored the Raiders’ first goal. Ella Nichols scored for the Golden Tornado.
Shaler 10, Penn Hills 0 – Gabby Alcalde scored a hat trick, Peyton Schweitzer added two goals, Naudia Zotter had a goal and three assists and Lia Wallander added a goal and an assist for Shaler (5-5-1, 3-4-1) in a Section 1-3A win over Penn Hills (1-11-1, 1-8). Reanna Richardson and Liv Ryan shared the shutout.
South Fayette 13, Albert Gallatin 0 – Mia Deramo had two goals and two assists, Katelyn Michel also scored twice and Gabby Beinecke had three assists to lead South Fayette (10-3, 7-0) past Albert Gallatin (1-7, 1-5) in Section 3-3A.
South Park 9, Steel Valley 0 – Taylor Vargo, Alicia Riberich, Brooke Paylo and Addison Kerr had two goals apiece and Emily Mihelcic also scored for South Park (9-4-1, 9-0) in a Section 1-2A win over Steel Valley (4-7, 3-6).
Southmoreland 10, Ligonier Valley 1 – Audrey Seder recorded a hat trick and Megan Mehall buried a pair of goals as Southmoreland (9-4, 5-2) raced to a Section 4-2A win over Ligonier Valley (1-10, 0-6). Caylin Raymond, Gia Vandyke, Mia Jordan, Bella Henderson and Addy Jordan each added a goal for the Scotties. Sophie Carns scored for the Rams.
Waynesburg 3, Beth-Center 1 – Rylei Rastoka had a goal and two assists and Jaden Tretinik and Emily Rafferty also scored for Waynesburg (9-2, 5-2) in a Section 2-A win over Beth-Center (2-7, 1-6).
West Allegheny 5, Trinity 1 – Ella Smith scored a hat trick and Casie Yonker added a goal as West Allegheny (10-2-1, 7-1) beat Trinity (1-8, 1-8) in Section 2-3A. Maddy Ponshad two assists for West A. Abby Higgins scored for the Hillers.
Yough 13, East Allegheny 0 – Daisy Miller and Britany Baumeister scored two goals each to lead Yough (9-5, 3-4) to a Section 4-2A win over East Allegheny (1-6, 0-6). Gillian Baloga, Grace Tomko, Brooke Wieland, Gionna Piontka, Mya Broadwater, Kate Slavick, Carly Fitzgibbons, Addie Watkins and Erin Reisinger also scored.
Boys soccer
Belle Vernon 5, Yough 1 – Brandon Yeschenko had a hat trick and Chris Showman and Trevor Kovatch also scored for Belle Vernon (5-5) in a nonsection win over Yough (3-5-2).
Brentwood 7, McKeesport 1 – Carlos Duran and Evan Mingle scored two goals each to lead Brentwood (5-6) past McKeesport (0-12) in a nonsection game.
Deer Lakes 2, North Catholic 0 – Peyton Kushon scored a goal and Jake Orseno added another on a penalty kick to lift Deer Lakes (10-2-1, 8-1) over North Catholic (9-3, 7-2) in Section 1-2A. Cuyler Crim had an assist and Wes Boyle kept a clean net for the Lancers.
Girls volleyball
Brownsville 3, Geibel 0 – Ashley Evanchak had 18 digs, Skyler Gates added 12 kills and Payton Evanchak dished out 15 assists as Brownsville (5-7) swept Geibel (1-10) in a nonsection match.
Ligonier Valley 3, East Allegheny 0 – Rylee Monticue had 11 assists and Kya Hegan added 13 assists to lead Ligonier Valley (6-4) to a nonsection win over East Allegheny (1-11).
Hockey
Armstrong 3, Baldwin 2 (OT) – Armstrong (1-0) won the shootout to secure a Class 2A victory. Jason Rullo scored twice in regulation, including the game-tying goal in the third period for the River Hawks. Logan Cramer and Jeremy Pollard had a goal each for Baldwin (0-0-1).
Avonworth 11, North Catholic 6 – Linus Jesionowski had a hat trick, Conner Ralston and Cooper Powell each collected two goals and three assists and Austin Dzadovsky had two goals and two assists for Avonworth (1-0) in a Class A win. Carson Paglia scored twice for North Catholic(0-1).
Canon-McMillan 3, Norwin 2 – Rocco Musto scored twice in the third period to rally Canon-McMillan (1-0) past Norwin (0-1) in Class 2A. Ayden Heinen also scored for the Big Macs, who trailed 2-0 in the first period. Brody Boban and Josh Toth had a goal apiece for the Knights.
Chartiers Valley 4, Plum 0 – Tyler Held had a goal and an assist, Vinny Vennero, Brady Nairn and Ryan Viola also scored and Matt Colberg had a 19-save shutout for Chartiers Valley (1-0) in a Class A win. Noah Lander made 30 saves for Plum (0-1).
Hampton 5, Butler 4 (OT) – Eli Schwartzbach scored the overtime winner, Preston Cochran and Michael Cummings each had a pair of goals and Daniel Leyes doled out three assists for Hampton (0-1) in a Class A win. Lucus Hensler scored twice and Brayden Hardsock had a goal and two assists for Butler (0-0-1).
Indiana 3, North Hills 1 – Andrew Manzek, Nick Carretti and Gabe Nettleton each scored a goal as Indiana (1-0) defeated North Hills (0-1) in a Class A matchup. Domenic Rennebeck scored the only goal for North Hills.
Mars 7, West Allegheny 2 – Gavin Stevenson scored four goals, Jack Tirch had a goal and two assists, Ben Bowser added a goal and an assist and Xavier Bossola dished out three assists for Mars (1-0) in a Class A win. Maddox Luketic and Branden Switalski scored for West Allegheny (0-1).
North Allegheny 4, South Fayette 0 – Kyle Imm, Travis Lamark, Marc Joyson and Topher Moran each scored a goal to power North Allegheny (1-0) over South Fayette (0-1) in Class 3A. Justin Hai and Brock Murphy each had two assists while Cam Junker stopped 21 shots for the Tigers shutout.
Penn-Trafford 6, Hempfield 0 – Brock Bienemann scored a hat trick to lead Penn-Trafford (1-0) to a Class 2A shutout win against Hempfield (0-1). Aiden Drotos, Robert Thatcher and Kyler Doran each added a goal, Doran and Drotos had three assists apiece and Tyler Funk stopped 30 shots for the Warriors.
Quaker Valley 6, McDowell 1 – Matthias Lezama had a pair of goals and assists for Quaker Valley (1-0) in a Class A win over McDowell (0-1). Max Modrovich added a goal and three assists and Charlie Pyle contributed a goal and three assists.
