High school roundup for Sept. 7, 2024: North Catholic rallies past Blackhawk

Jack White hauled in a 47-yard pass from Joey Felitsky with just over two minutes remaining to lead North Catholic to a 33-32 comeback victory over Blackhawk in nonconference football Saturday.

Christian Naylor also scored a fourth-quarter touchdown on a 16-yard run for the Trojans (1-2).

Felitsky threw for 235 yards and two other touchdown passes, hitting Will Waskiewicz for a 21-yarder and Ryder Kennedy for a 10-yarder. Tom Arth added a 1-yard touchdown run for North Catholic.

Brayden McCarthy ran for 118 yards and touchdowns of 47 and 7 yards and caught a 26-yard scoring pass from Stephen Knally for Blackhawk (1-2). Knally threw for 171 yards and hit Cody Woodward for a 51-yard touchdown strike to open the scoring.

Northgate 39, New Brighton 7 – Darius Fields ran for 108 yards and three touchdowns as Class A Northgate (2-1) defeated Class 2A New Brighton (2-1). Northgate outgained New Brighton 310-87.

Riverside 9, Laurel 7 – Robert Janis ran for 105 yards and a touchdown as Class 2A Riverside (1-2) held on to defeat Class A Laurel (0-3). Luca Santini threw for 130 yards and Laurel’s only touchdown.

Shaler 33, Hampton 13 – Sami Tapu rushed for 147 yards and two touchdowns to lead Class 5A Shaler (2-1) to the win at Class 4A Hampton (1-2). Evan McAneny ran for 81 yards and both Hampton touchdowns.

South Side 35, Beaver Falls 14 – AC Corfield ran for 156 yards and Amare Moman and Mateja Pavlovhch added two rushing touchdowns each as Class A No. 3 South Side (2-0) defeated Class 2A Beaver Falls (0-3). Sincere Freeman rushed for 115 yards and a touchdown for Beaver Falls.

Western Beaver 38, Rochester 0 – Jaivin Peel threw for 315 yards and four touchdowns to lead Class 2A Western Beaver (1-1) to the shutout against Class A Rochester (0-2). Jadon Bishop caught six passes for 111 yards and two touchdowns.

Boys soccer

Beaver 3, Sewickley Academy 1 – In a nonsection matchup, Shane Ebbitt had two goals and Zach Orend added two assists as Beaver (2-1-1) beat Sewickley Academy (2-2).

Beth-Center 1, South Allegheny 0 – Nekoda Bundy scored the game’s only goal and Luke Amon recorded the shutout as Beth-Center (3-0-1) beat South Allegheny (1-4) in nonsection play.

Charleroi 7, Greensburg Salem 1 – Blake Pendo, Caleb Amoroso and Dylan Klinger ecored two goals each as Charleroi (3-0, 2-0) beat Greensburg Salem (0-4, 0-3) in Section 4-2A. Gage Patterson added a goal on a penalty kick plus two assists.

Neshannock 2, Grove City 1 – Zayden Herb scored both goals for Neshannock (5-1) in its nonsection win against Grove City.

North Catholic 6, Burrell 2 – Justin Garvey and Arthur Mendonca had two goals each and Michael Riley and Brody Kennedy also scored to power North Catholic (4-2, 3-1) to a Section 1-2A win. Billy Kowalkowski and Calio Zanella scored for Burrell (2-2, 2-2).

South Side 4, Chartiers-Houston 1 – Wyatt Lightner, Nate Ashcroft, George Hunt and Austin Leatherman scored to lift South Side (1-3) past Chartiers-Houston (1-5) in a nonsection match.

Girls soccer

Baldwin 8, Hempfield 0 – Addison Hirt and Mary Vargo scored two goals apiece to lead Baldwin (3-3) to a nonsection win over Hempfield (1-3). Lilly Schwarz, Laila Ruvolo, Kelsey Meyer and Reagan Aston-Reese also scored for the Highlanders.

Butler 3, Mercer 0 – Jess Calhoun had one goal and one assist as Butler (2-3) beat Mercer in a nonsection game. Lucia Leyland added two assists.

Chartiers-Houston 3, South Side 0 – In nonsection play, Amelia Brose scored twice and Ella Richey stopped five shots for the shutout as Chartiers-Houston (3-1) beat South Side (0-4).

Deer Lakes 1, Keystone Oaks 0 – Reese Waruszewski scored the winning goal and Mikayla Potter recorded the shutout as Deer Lakes (2-1-2) picked up a nonsection win over Keystone Oaks (4-3).

Mt. Pleasant 2, South Park 1 – Isabel Overly and Maddie Barrick scored goals, each on assists from Rylin Bugosh, as Mt. Pleasant (4-0) defeated South Park (3-3) in nonsection play. Taylor Vargo scored South Park’s goal.

North Allegheny 1, Norwin 0 – Aubrey Wells scored the decisive goal and Maggie Nestor recorded the shutout to lead North Allegheny (3-1) to a nonsection win over Norwin (2-3).

Penn-Trafford 5, Shaler 2 – Tori Yurt picked up the hat trick to lead Penn-Trafford (3-2) to the nonsection win against Shaler (2-2). Lauryn Francis and Alexis Brown added goals for Penn-Trafford while Isabella Rager tallied two assists.

Pine-Richland 2, Moon 0 – Abby Satina and Molly Baker scored first-half goals and Shea Best made seven saves to preserve the shutout as Pine-Richland (3-1) defeated Moon (3-1) in nonsection play.

Cross country

Red, White & Blue Invitational – West Allegheny’s Grace Fritzman was the winner with a time of 18:22.8 and North Allegheny took the team title in the Class 3A girls race at White Oak Park. MJ Pottinger won the boys race, leading Grove City to the team title.

Hampton swept the team titles in Class 2A. Christopher Belch took third to lead the boys and Kevyn Fish was second to pace the Talbots girls. Freeport’s Michael Braun was the Class 2A boys champ and St. Mary’s Gabby Pistner won the Class 2A girls race.
