High school roundup for Sept. 8, 2018: Peters Township girls blank USC

Regan Lavigna and Casey Breier’s goals led Peters Township to a 2-0 victory over Upper St. Clair (1-1, 1-1) in a Section 2-4A girls soccer matchup.

The Indians improved to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in section play.

Norwin 8, Connellsville 2 — Morgan Sigut scored three goals, and Lexi Gray, Kiana Francis, Abby Bartos and Katelyn Kauffman also scored to lift Norwin (2-0, 2-0) to a Section 3-AAAA triumph.

Franklin Regional 8, Armstrong 0 — Sydney Lindeman notched the hat trick and Victoria Rothrauff added two goals to lead Franklin Regional (2-1, 1-1) to the Section 1-AAA shutout over Armstrong (0-2, 0-2).

Greensburg Salem 5, Uniontown 1 — Kylie Smith scored two goals as Greensburg Salem rolled to a win over Uniontown (0-4, 0-2) in a Section 2-AAA game.

Mackenzie Soriano, Nikki Mellinger and Maddie Gall also scored for the Golden Lions (2-1, 2-0).

Thomas Jefferson 4, Obama Academy 1 — Dalaney Ranallo, Demi Kondos, Ava Lutz and Mya Greschner scored for Thomas Jefferson (2-2, 2-0) in its Section 3-AAA win over Obama Academy (1-3, 0-2).

Trinity 12, Woodland Hills 0 — Alyssa Clutter scored three goals for the second straight game to lead Trinity (3-0, 2-0) to the Section 3-AAA shutout over Woodland Hills (1-3, 0-2). Sam Schury also notched a hat trick for Trinity, which has outscored its opponents this season, 21-0.

South Park 5, Brownsville 2 — Haleigh Finale scored three goals to lead South Park (3-1, 2-0) to the Section 3-AA Win at Brownsville (3-1, 1-1).

Yough 2, Mt. Pleasant 0 — Gianna Appolonia and Lindsey McClaren scored as Yough (1-1, 1-1) shut out Mt. Pleasant (2-1, 1-1) in Section 3-AA. Mt. Pleasant had outscored its opponents 9-0 over its first two games.

Chartiers-Houston 1, Charleroi 0 (OT) — Alyssa Wright scored off of an assist from Ashley Horvath three minutes into the second overtime to give Chartiers-Houston (3-2, 2-0) a Section 2-A win against Charleroi (0-1, 0-1).

Apollo-Ridge 2, Freeport 1 (2OT) — Apollo-Ridge junior forward Mayce Anthony went top shelf with a penalty kick and beat Yellowjackets goalkeeper Maddie Wagner with seven seconds remaining in double-overtime to lead Apollo-Ridge past Section 1-AA rival Freeport.

The win marks the first time Apollo-Ridge (2-0, 1-0) has beaten Freeport in the program’s short history. Freeport (1-2, 1-1) standout Sidney Shemanski opened the game with a goal early in the first half.

From there, the Yellowjackets played defense until Katarina Yurjevich tied the score with 9:45 remaining in the second half. Junior keeper Madison Galinac had 26 saves for the Vikings.

Highlands 3, Valley 2 — Jaci Bowser scored the winner on a breakaway with 59 seconds remaining to lift Highlands past Section 1-AA rival Valley.

After a scoreless first half, Valley (0-2, 0-2) struck first on an Autumn Doran goal. Highlands (2-2, 1-1) responded with back-to-back goals from Bowser and Hailey Heister. The Vikings tied the score on a Daisha Keys goal.

Goalkeeper Samantha Gildner had eight saves in goals for Highlands, and Valley’s Alex Guy had 12 saves.

Deer Lakes 3, East Allegheny 0 — Sisters Abigail and Madeline Boulos tallied a goal and an assist each as Deer Lakes rolled to the Section 1-AA win. Lily Liturn added a goal.

Kiski Area 3, Hampton 2 (OT) — Kiski Area’s Christa Palla scored the winner with four minutes left in the overtime as the Cavaliers remained perfect on the season with the win over Section 1-AAA rival Hampton (1-2, 1-1).

Courtney Moyer kept Kiski Area (2-0, 2-0) in the game with two goals during regulation. Kaylee Elwood added two assists and Emily Aller added another for the Cavaliers. Goalkeeper Lizzy Arbster recored six saves for Kiski.

Boys soccer

Norwin 5, Ringgold 0 — In nonsection play, Norwin (4-1) scored four second-half goals on way to defeating Ringgold (1-4). Zach Ullum, Carter Breen, Jake Nebinski, Eli Baglio and Ian Brown scored for the Knights.

Belle Vernon 4, Elizabeth Forward 1 — Preston Hunt scored twice to help Belle Vernon (4-1) to a nonsection victory.

Gateway 3, Kiski Area 2 (OT) — Gateway’s Ben Meshanko scored the winner eight minutes into overtime to lift Gateway (1-3) past rival Kiski Area (1-2) in a nonsection match. Kiski Area’s Jake Kalik scored the game’s first goal before the Gators Matt Murphy tied it at 1-1.

Tyler Cuica gave the Cavaliers a 2-1 halftime lead before Gateway came back with two second-half goals.

Mt. Pleasant 1, Latrobe 0 — Tyler Dickerson scored to lift Mt. Pleasant (2-0) to a nonsection win.

Football

Western Beaver 27, Shenango 13 — Cam Irvine ran for 105 yards and a touchdown, and Raven Chandler added two TD runs to guide Western Beaver (2-1, 1-0) to a Class 2A Midwestern Conference victory.

OLSH 56, Northgate 0 — Austin Wigley scored on touchdown runs of 1, 5 and 4 yards to help OLSH (3-0, 2-0) roll to a Class A Big Seven victory.

Jay Pearson scored on runs of 4 and 18 yards and also on an 85-yard interception return.

Charleroi 48, Riverview 7 — Brayden Mihalcin led the Class 2A No. 4 Cougars (2-0) with four touchdowns and 206 rushing yards as Charleroi outscored the Raiders, 27-0, in the third quarter. Cole Hunter-Perry added 141 rushing yards and a pair of scores in the nonconference game. The Raiders (0-2) got a 64-yard scoring run by Devin Binz in the second period.
