High school roundup: Peters Township boys soccer advances to PIAA semifinals

Bryce Gabelhart scored a goal and an assist to lead Peters Township (19-1-1) to a 3-1 victory over North Allegheny (20-3-1) in the PIAA Class AAAA soccer quarterfinals at Fox Chapel. Logan Brinsky and Matt Stuck added goals for Peters Township, which advances to play District 3 champion Hempfield in Tuesday's semifinals.

Lower Dauphin 4, West Allegheny 1 — Lower Dauphin scored four times in its PIAA Class AAA quarterfinal win against West Allegheny (20-3-1) in Altoona. West Allegheny led 1-0 at halftime on a Caleb Miller goal.

Montour 3, Cathedral Prep 1 — Nolan Hunter recorded a goal and an assist to lead Montour (18-3-1) to a PIAA Class AAA quarterfinal win over Cathedral Prep at Wilmington High School. Gunnar Graham and Brandon Wagner also scored goals for Montour, which scored all three goals in the first 15 minutes of the match to take a 3-0 lead. Montour will face Lower Dauphin in the semifinals Tuesday.

Oley Valley 1, Shady Side Academy 0 — Josh Daniels scored with 24 minutes left in the game as Oley Valley advanced to the PIAA semifinals for the first time since 1995 by shutting out Shady Side Academy (15-8-1) at Chambersburg.

Quaker Valley 2, Beaver 1 — Landon Grant scored his second goal of the game with one minute left in the second half to give Quaker Valley (21-2) the Class AA quarterfinal victory against Beaver (10-10-3) at Moon. Nick Gengarella scored Beaver's goal.

Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic 1, Mercer 0 — Ryan Augustine scored on a scramble in front of the net with 2 minutes, 28 seconds remaining to lift the Trojans to a PIAA Class A quarterfinal win at Slippery Rock High School. Keaton Jennings picked up the shutout in goal for North Catholic (22-1), the Trojans' 17th of the season.

Brockway 2, Springdale 1 — Zane Puhala scored his second goal of the game with 13:08 remaining to give District 9 champion a PIAA Class A quarterfinal victory at Slippery Rock High School. Austin Moore stopped three shots for the Rovers (20-0), who advance to play WPIAL champion Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic in the semifinals. Jared Demore scored a tying goal for Springdale (16-6-1) in the first half, and Mike Zolnierczyk made eight saves.

Girls soccer

Norwin 4, North Allegheny 0 — Emily Harrigan scored twice as Norwin (19-2-1) defeated North Allegheny (14-8-1) in the PIAA quarterfinals at Fox Chapel. Katy Ericson and Emily Harrigan added goals, and goalkeeper Sam Wexell recorded her school-record 51st career shutout. Norwin, which advances to the PIAA semifinals for the second time in three years, will face Conestoga Valley on Tuesday.

Villa Maria 2, Mars 1 — At Wilmington Area High School, Villa Maria won on penalty kicks over Mars (17-3), 3-0, to advance to the PIAA semifinals.

Moon 4, Fleetwood 0 — Delaney Snyder recorded a goal and two assists to lead Moon (24-0) to a PIAA Class AAA quarterfinal win over Fleetwood at Chambersburg Area. Chloe Kuminkoski scored two goals for the Tigers. Moon will advance to the semifinals to face Villa Maria on Tuesday.

Bedford 1, Waynesburg 0 — Bedford scored a first-half goal, and its defense held on the rest of the way in its PIAA Class AA quarterfinal shutout over Waynesburg (20-2) at Hempfield. The loss snapped Waynesburg's 19-game winning streak.

Greensburg Central Catholic 1, Windber 0 — Samantha Felder scored the only goal to lead Greensburg Central Catholic (17-3) to a PIAA Class A quarterfinal win over Windber at Somerset. The Centurions will move on to face Shady Side Academy in the semifinals Tuesday.

Shady Side Academy 3, Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic 1 — Krystyna Rytel, Caroline Davis and Sophia McMahon scored as Shady Side Academy (15-4) beat Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic (17-6) at Moon in the PIAA Class A playoffs.

Girls volleyball

North Allegheny 3, Seneca Valley 0 — North Allegheny swept Seneca Valley, 25-22, 25-19, 25-18, in the PIAA Class AAAA quarterfinals at Ambridge. North Allegheny will play Garnet Valley on Tuesday.

Garnet Valley 3, Armstrong 0 — Defending state champion Garnet Valley beat Armstrong in straight sets, 25-20, 25-19, 25-22, to advance to the Class AAAA semifinals against North Allegheny.

Knoch 3, General McLane 0 — Knoch, the WPIAL Class AAA champion, swept General McLane, 25-14, 25-19, 25-15, in the PIAA quarterfinals at Slippery Rock High School. Knoch will face Montour in the semifinals Tuesday.

Montour 3, Palmyra 0 — Montour, the WPIAL Class AAA runner-up, defeated Palmyra in straight sets, 25-23, 25-18, 25-20, in a PIAA quarterfinal match at McConnellsburg High School. Montour will face Knoch, a WPIAL Class AAA championship rematch, in the semifinals Tuesday.

Freeport 3, Corry 1 — Freeport knocked off defending PIAA Class AA champion Corry, 23-25, 25-21, 26-24, 25-13, in the PIAA quarterfinals at Slippery Rock High School. Freeport will face Beaver in Tuesday's semifinals.

Beaver 3, Serra Catholic 1 — At Ambridge, Beaver defeated Serra Catholic, 23-25, 25-10, 25-13, 25-20, to advance to the Class AA PIAA semifinals.
