The WPIAL extended the deadline to report early season results until midnight Friday.

The original deadline was Wednesday, but because some coaches had problems recording scores, the WPIAL moved the deadline.

WPIAL officials will be putting together heat sheets for the individual track and field championships and releasing them Monday. Any result that had not been reported by Friday will not count.

All scheduled section dual meets were to be completed by Wednesday, and brackets for the team postseason were released Thursday.

The North Allegheny girls and Quaker Valley girls are each trying to win a fourth straight WPIAL championship this spring, and the Butler boys hope to repeat and make it four district titles in the last five seasons. Quaker Valley also won the boys 2A title last season.

The semifinals are set for Tuesday at North Allegheny, Norwin, Butler and South Fayette for Class 3A, as well as Class 2A meets at Shenango, Greensburg Central Catholic, California and South Side.

The winning boys and girls teams from each site advance to the WPIAL team finals May 6 at West Mifflin.

Electronic crackdown

Athletes using electronic devices within the track during competition are receiving a warning from track officials to put them away or risk being excused from the competition.

According to PIAA official Tom Manns, it is a rule that was emphasized by the PIAA and is being enforced.

The main reason for the rule is because athletes were not hearing the calls for their events.

Section champions crowned

Four boys teams and four girls teams from Westmoreland County won section track and field titles: Norwin boys and girls, Kiski Area boys and girls, Franklin Regional boys and girls and Greensburg Central Catholic boys and girls.

The other boys section titles went to Ringgold, North Allegheny, Mt. Lebanon, Moon and New Castle boys in 3A and Shenango, South Side, Quaker Valley, Riverview, South Park, California and Trinity Christian in 2A. Girls section champs were Laurel Highlands, North Allegheny, Mt. Lebanon, South Fayette, Blackhawk in 3A and Laurel, OLSH, Quaker Valley, North Catholic, Carlynton, California and Winchester Thurston in 2A.

Invitational time

The Baldwin, Pine-Richland and Altoona Invitationals will be held next Friday.

The 51st Baldwin Invitational will feature more than 44 teams, including Canon-McMillan, Mt. Lebanon, North Allegheny, Norwin and South Fayette.

Pine-Richland Invitational has grown to more than 60 teams, including Butler, Shaler, Latrobe, North Hills, Franklin Regional and Kiski Area.

Derry and Ligonier Valley will be headed to the mountains for the Altoona Mountain Lion Classic.
