High school wrestling roundup for Jan. 29, 2025: Thomas Jefferson storms into Class 3A semifinals

Maddox Shaw (152), Brayden White (160), Bode Marlow (172) and Zach LaBryer (189) recorded four consecutive pins and a pin by Shep Turk (285) gave Thomas Jefferson the lead for good in a 39-33 victory over Trinity in the WPIAL Class 3A team wrestling quarterfinals Wednesday.

Zach Rehak (107) also had a pin and Robert Cordova (114) won by decision for the Jaguars (12-0), who will face Franklin Regional in Saturday’s semifinals.

Dominick Canali (127) won by tech fall, Jacob Wright (133) by major decision and Devin Junko (139) and TJ Allison (145) by pin as Trinity (7-3) took a 21-0 lead. Ian Holub (215) also had a pin for the Hillers.

In the first round, Thomas Jefferson beat North Hills, 55-14, and Trinity stopped West Allegheny, 41-24.

Connellsville 52, Kiski Area 22 – Defending champion Connellsville (7-1) won the first nine weights to win a Class 3A quarterfinal. Zachary Franks (114), Nolan Rice (121), Jake Lilley (133), Kai Vielma (139), Julian Ruggieri (145), Evan Petrovich (152) and Lonzy Vielma (160) had pins and Luke Lilley (127) won by major decision for the Falcons, who will meet Norwin in the semifinals Saturday.

Kiski Area (14-6) won the last four bouts. Mario Hutcherson (172), Abrahm Taylor (189) and Luke Geltz (285) recorded pins and Cooper Roscosky (215) won by major decision.

In the first round, Connellsville beat Shaler, 57-12, and Kiski Area topped Latrobe, 45-29.

Franklin Regional 37, North Allegheny 23 – Trailing 23-19 with four bouts to go, Franklin Regional (15-0) got a tech fall from Michael Ruane (127), a decision from Chase Smith (133) and a major decision from Nico Sarnic (139) to capture a Class 3A quarterfinal win.

Ethan Cartwright (172) had the only pin of the meet for the Panthers, who will meet Thomas Jefferson in Saturday’s semifinals. Beau Fennick (107) and Titus Colangelo (114) won by major decisions and Henry Patts (215) won by tech fall.

Mason Hartung (189) and Bradyn McConneha (285) recorded pins, Griffen Reid (152) and Evan Schmoberg (121) won decisions and Kellen Buggey (160) won by tech fall for North Allegheny (15-3).

Franklin Regional defeated Moon, 54-11, in the first round and North Allegheny beat Fox Chapel, 37-27.

McGuffey 45, Laurel 24 – Blake Jamison (107) won by major decision and Clayton Ealy (114) and Tucker Main (121) recorded pins in three straight bouts as McGuffey (15-4) shook off an early deficit to beat Laurel (17-4) in the Class 2A quarterfinals. Lucas Barr (139) had a tech fall and Gage Clayton (160), Reid Teagarden (172) and Emmett Wolfe (133) recorded pins for the Highlanders, who will take on Derry in Saturday’s semifinals.

Braxton Carr (152) and Archer Brua (127) won decisions and Domenic Willis (189), Kolton Carlson (215) and Casey Wilson (285) had pins for the Spartans.

In the first round, McGuffey defeated Avonworth, 62-11, and Laurel beat Beth-Center, 53-20.

Norwin 32, Bethel Park 28 – Freshman Coleton Klipa won by tech fall with the Knights trailing by one going into the final bout to lift fifth-seeded Norwin (14-1) past fourth-seeded Bethel Park (10-2) in the Class 3A quarterfinals. Landon Sidun, Nathan Gulibon, Jack White, Nicholas Puskar, Riley Shaffer and Luca Butera also won matches for the Knights, who will meet No. 1 Connellsville in Saturday’s semifinals. In the first round, Norwin beat Canon-McMillan, 41-23, and Bethel Park downed Butler, 50-16.

Quaker Valley 48, Freedom 23 – Quaker Valley (12-4) moved into the Class 2A semifinals with a victory over Freedom (11-3). In the first round, the Quakers beat Elizabeth Forward, 54-18, and the Bulldogs defeated South Park, 40-22. Quaker Valley will face Burrell in Saturday’s semifinals.
