Hometown Softball Program Game Recap – Montour – April 22, 2012

On a day more suited for ducks,and fish the crew from MSA SPORTS went to Fairhaven Park in Kennedy Township for a Hometown Softball broadcast between the home standing Montour Spartans and the visiting Chartiers Valley Colts. Unfortunately for the Spartans in their inaugural Hometown softball broadcast the scoreboard and weather would not be kind to them as they took a tough loss 14-5 in six innings.

The game was called by the umpire after the 6th due to the poor condition of the field.

Chartiers Valley scored four runs in the 1st, one in the 4th, and 2 in the 5th but only led 7-5 as the Spartans answered with runs each time the Colts scored.

In the first inning Montour plated a run as Megan Vacco was hit by a pitch and with two outs Allison Reidel hit an RBI double to make it 4-1.

In the second  with one out Tori Roman the Spartans 1st baseman hit a booming HR to left field to cut the lead again to 4-2.

In the 4th inning Alyssa McMurtrie reached on an error with two outs, Stacey Capp walked, and Vacco hit a triple for 2 RBI and the score was cut again this time to 5-4.

In the 5th ining a walk and an error plated another run and the Spartans made it 7-5, but that was the closest they would come.

The Colts sent 12 Girls to the plate in the 6th and scored 7 runs as the weather took a turn for the worse.

Spartans starting pitcher, sophomore Kaitley Kutchman had a rough day on the mound. One of the leading pitchers in wins and strikeouts in the WPIAL, she had problems gripping the ball. With the wet weather both pitchers had to trade softballs to the dugout every few pitches to get a dry ball. However Char Valleys Lindsay Reicroff seemed a little more patient and waited for the dry ball more often, and had more success. Kutchman gave up 15 runs, 15 hits, walked 10, hit 1 batter and struck out only 3 in taking the loss. Head coach Bills Wills of the Spartans was not happy with his teams effort at the plate or in the field, and had a long team meeting after the game.

For the Spartans on offense Vacco led them with 2 hits, one the RBI triple, and a run scored. Reidel had the double and walked twice and scored a run. McMurtrie was on base three times with 2 walks and the error, she also stole a base, and scored a run. Overall the Spartans scored their 5 runs on 5 hits and 5 walks.

Coach Wills could not have been pleased that they stranded 8 runners on base. They had runners on base in very inning and could never get that break through inning. In the 2nd inning they had Reicroff in trouble with the bases loaded and one out but could not score.

Overall it was a tough day for Montour as they fell to 8-5 overall and  4-2 in section 2 AAA. They are in second place 1/2 game behind section leader West Allegheny. Coming up for the Spartans next week are three big section match ups. On Tuesday 4/24 the travel to McGuffey. On Thursday they play West A at home in another Home Town broadcast. Then on Saturday the travel to Trinity. These three games will go a long way to answering a few questions about this Montour team.

Can they still win the section title? Will they hang on to a playoff spot? Finally can they forget  Saturday’s game and regain their confidence heading into their final four section games.
