Hometown Softball Recap – Chartiers-Houston Buccaneers – 04/29/2016

Chartiers-Houston used timely hitting and a strong pitching performance to topple section for Jefferson-Morgan to take control of second place in section 1-A with an 8-2 victory over the Rockets. With the win. Chartiers-Houston secured a season-sweep over last season’s District 7 champions. Jefferson-Morgan beat the Bucs 3-2 in the WPIAL title game last season.

Char-Houston sophomore Kaitlyn Dittrich held the Rockets without a hit through the first four innings, and the Bucs opened up a lead thanks to a two-out three-run homer run by junior Kayla Alderson in the third inning.  Sophomore Jessica Ford doubled home courtesy runner Macie Shober in the fourth to extend the Bucs advantage to 4-0.

Jefferson Morgan battled back in the final three innings, breaking up Dittrich’s no-hit bid in the fifth and scoring in the fifth and sixth innings. Maddie Vandivner’s single was the Rocket’s first hit, and she came around and scored on Camryn Dugan’s RBI double to cut the Char-Houston lead to 4-1. Dittrich managed to get out of the inning before any more damage was done.

The Buccaneers got the run back and added to their lead in the bottom of the fifth with a couple of two out walks turning into a two-run single for  Dittrich, plating Alderson and Kasey Scears. Trailing 6-1, Jefferson-Morgan scratched another run across in the top of the sixth with Brooke Diamond doubling home Anna Matish, but the Rockets wound up stranding two runners in the frame.

Chartiers-Houston once again got the run back and added to its lead by virtue of another two-out two-run single by Dittrich in the bottom of the sixth inning scoring Brittany Bluman and Macie Kesneck.

Trailing 8-2 Jefferson-Morgan loaded the bases with no outs in the seventh, but failed to score with a strikeout and double play to end the game.

Seven of the eight Buccaneer runs came with two outs, and Dittrich drove in four runs and struck out eight batters while collecting the win for Chartiers-Houston. All nine Bucs reached base safely. Alderson walked three times and in addition to her home run.

Chartiers-Houston takes sole possession of second place in section 1-A with a 6-2 section mark and picked up the series sweep over the Rockets. Jefferson-Morgan falls to 5-3 in section with a meeting with top-ranked West Greene on Tuesday. Both teams wrap up their section seasons next week.
