Carlynton (7-3) got a massive fight from underdog Brentwood (3-7), but prevailed 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-15) in a WPIAL Class A Section 2 volleyball showdown on Thursday night at Brentwood High School.
With the win the Cougars clinched a WPIAL playoff birth and eliminated Vincentian Academy from a possible postseason appearance.
Brentwood was hurt early by a number of unforced errors. The Spartans committed 15 unforced errors in the opening set, but were still able to grab a 13-12 lead thanks to five kills from Sophomore Hannah Livingston. But the Cougars answered with a 7-0 run and were able to claim the first set 25-19.
The second set was the toughest for Carlynton. After building a 13-3 lead, the Cougars would struggle down the stretch, as Brentwood clawed back. But the Cougars, paced by Jordan Melko’s five kills, would prevail 25-21.
The third set became a dazzling show from the net-front players, as Carlynton’s Melko and Connor Richardson combined for nine kills, leading the Cougars to a 25-15 victory and the 3-0 match win.
Brentwood, who battled the entire way, received seven kills from Hannah Livingston, six kills from Allison Mrkonja and five kills from Taryn Sherry.
Melko led Carlynton will a match-high ten kills, while Richardson added nine. It was a strong night for setter Emily Brozenick, who put Melko and Richardson in perfect position all night. She also added three service aces for the Cougars, who will face Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic on Tuesday before finishing the regular season at undefeated Bishop Canevin next Thursday.
Brentwood, who was already eliminated from postseason competition coming into the contest, will end their regular season at Vincentain on Tuesday before returning for the final home game for six seniors on Thursday against Serra Catholic.
