An undefeated section season continues for Freeport volleyball after a Senior Night victory. The Lady Yellowjackets defeated the Derry Lady Trojans in straight sets (25-15, 25-21, 25-23).

After the Senior Night festivities for the five seniors on the roster, things got off to a slow start for Freeport as Derry rattled off the first three points of the match. The Lady Yellowjackets did not panic, and responded with the next four points to take the lead early in the set. Freeport would not relinquish that lead in the set, and carried a seven-point run late to take the first set 25-15.

The second set featured two underclassmen heating up on Senior Night. Sophomore Lauren Lampus and junior Ally DeJidas each recorded four kills in the set. Freeport registered a pair of five-point runs in the set en route to a 25-21 victory.

The seniors stepped up in the final set. Setter Courtney Grubbs started the set with four straight service points. Ashley Sullivan, back after missing games with a concussion, made numerous digs in the back line, as did specialist Mallory Stopko. Libero Claire Crytzer also controlled the back line and dominated on the service stripe. And the final point was delivered by the final Senior Hannah Mason, as Freeport took the final set 25-23.

DeJidas led the Lady Yellowjackets with 11 kills. Lampus followed with eight kills. Mason, Sarah Hettich, and Hailey Graham each recorded six kills. Crytzer had 16 service points and three aces, while Grubbs recorded 13 service points and a pair of kills.

Derry (7-3) was led by Alix Ellis’s 16 kills and four blocks.

The win moves Freeport to 11-0 in the section on the season. The Lady Yellowjackets have secured a playoff bid for the 16th straight season under coach Tom Phillips. They look to clinch another section championship when they travel to Deer Lakes (8-1) next Thursday. Freeport also has a non-section home clash with 3A Central Valley on Wednesday before playoffs begin in two weeks.

Congratulations to the Freeport Lady Yellowjackets on another great season, and good luck to the senior members of the team on their future endeavors!
