Fox Chapel boys soccer coach Erik Ingram doesn’t always get bogged down by tactics when the Foxes play section rival Seneca Valley.

Many times, Ingram gets caught up in being a spectator. Ingram appreciates competing against the Raiders because he admires the program they’ve built.

Seneca Valley will be the team standing in Fox Chapel’s way in the WPIAL Class 4A final at 8 p.m. Friday night at Highmark Stadium as the Foxes pursue their second straight crown.

“At times, as coaches, you get caught watching the game because it’s such a good game,” Ingram said.

Fox Chapel (15-2) has been the one team that Seneca Valley hasn’t figured out this season. The Raiders (17-2) have only conceded 13 goals; five of them came against Fox Chapel.

The Foxes swept the two section meetings this season, winning 2-1 in overtime at home and 3-2 on the road.

“In games like that, I don’t think it’s anything they are doing to us or what we are doing to them,” Ingram said. “Great players rise to the occasion. I think we’ve had four guys score those five goals against Seneca.”

During the second meeting, Carson Torres, Sean Regan and Rocco Poli scored for the Foxes. Michael Pokryzwinski scored for the Raiders.

Ingram said Fox Chapel was able to maintain its success thanks to the players’ ability to understand what they do best.

“We went out and did our thing in games,” Ingram said. “That’s what carried us. It’s a really talented group. This group has a huge heart, and that’s gotten us through games.”

Ingram felt after Fox Chapel beat Plum, 3-0, in the semifinals Tuesday night that they would be prepared for any scenario in the final. There was some scheduling uncertainty for when the WPIAL final would be played because the Pittsburgh Riverhounds are set to host a home game in the first round of the USL playoffs Saturday.

The WPIAL chose to move title games to Wednesday night to help accommodate everyone’s schedules. The Foxes’ girls team won their second WPIAL title in three years by knocking off South Fayette in double overtime.

“No, we didn’t really know when we would play anyway,” Ingram said.

Seneca Valley has been one of the WPIAL’s most consistent programs. The Raiders have three WPIAL championships to their name and last won in 2021.

Ingram knows knocking off Seneca Valley won’t be easy.

“Beating Seneca three times in a year, that’s going to take everything we have,” Ingram said.
