Jeannette big-play senior Kymon’e Brown will go from throwing touchdown passes to catching them at the college level.
The dual-threat quarterback committed to play wide receiver at Robert Morris, achieving his long-time goal of reaching the Division I level.
He signed with the Colonials on Friday.
Brown (6-foot, 162 pounds) is getting a full scholarship. He chose RMU over Albany and IUP, with equally handsome deals on the table from both programs.
“(RMU) said I was the only high school player they offered from the area, with the portal and everything,” Brown said. “They believe in me highly.
“Their coach asked me, are you doing this for the money or to get to play? At first I said the money,” Brown said. “But then I said I need to play to make money in the NFL. My goal is to get there.”
Brown consulted family and friends before he made his final decision.
“I talked to (Greensburg Central Catholic’s) Samir (Crosby) and asked him why he picked (Georgetown),” Brown said. “He said it felt like home. RMU felt like home to me.”
Three of Brown’s cousins also played Division I football in Demetrious Cox (Michigan State), Robert Kennedy (East Carolina, Old Dominion, NC State) and Brayon Crawford (Cornell).
Brown, a two-time TribLive Westmoreland Football Player of the Year, also had an offer from Navy.
He is the latest in a long line of dual-threat quarterbacks who also starred in basketball for Jeannette.
He is the point guard on the WPIAL Class 2A defending champion Jayhawks. His impact on both sports is immeasurable.
Last season, Brown passed for 1,825 yards and 19 touchdowns and rushed for 1,116 yards and 17 scores.
He visited Albany last weekend but felt a greater connection with coaches at RMU.
“I was stressing, I’m not going to lie,” Brown said of going though the football recruiting grind during basketball season. “I was super stressed against GCC, and again (Wednesday against Springdale).
“I always wanted to go D-I for football. God is using me in his way. Every day I try to get to where I want to be and become a better man.”
Brown began his high school career as a receiver, taking over the reins early in his junior season. He led Jeannette to the WPIAL Class A semifinals two years ago and nearly orchestrated an upset of Clairton in this season’s quarterfinals.
“I’m super explosive, and I know I can be a good college receiver,” Brown said. “People say I haven’t caught a pass in like two years. I caught one last year (from Jayce Powell on a trick play).”
