Lance Getsy has resigned as football coach at Franklin Regional after five seasons.
Getsy and the Panthers had a rare down year, going 1-9 after making four straight WPIAL Class 5A playoff appearances. The Panthers gave up 33.6 points a game, the most in the Big East Conference.
He did not blame those things, explicitly, but also did not offer a specific reason for his departure.
The job opening was posted on the school’s website Friday.
“It just felt like the right time,” Getsy said. “It was a tough decision.
“I told the players, and I think a lot of them had heard rumors, so it wasn’t a huge surprise. They were all grateful as I am for all of them and their efforts.”
Getsy, who took over for longtime coach Greg Botta in 2021, finished 24-30. He made the playoffs four of five years, won a conference title in 2022 and won a playoff game last season when the Panthers edged North Hills, 17-16, in the first round.
Getsy, a learning support teacher in the district, said he plans to stay in coaching, although his next destination is unclear.
“I’m sure I will be where I’m supposed to be when the time is right,” he said. “I will miss working with the kids the most. I built a lot of great relationships with the kids, and they will always be part of my life. We really got close, especially the ones that were with me for multiple years.”
Getsy came to Franklin Regional with head coaching experience, having led Charleroi for two seasons. He also spent a couple of years as an assistant at Franklin Regional under Botta and also served as an assistant as Norwin, Gateway, Elizabeth Forward and at his alma mater, Steel Valley.
He said he will cherish his time leading the Panthers.
“I’ll never forget going golfing with last year’s seniors and look forward to continuing that as an annual tradition,” Getsy said. “The greatest part of this game is connecting with the players and building relationships.”
