Bethel Park goaltender Kevin Teamann proved inspirational at the start of the PIHL season.
Teamann was named the Class 2A Player of the Month for October after posting a 2-1-1 record, 1.96 goals-against average and .916 save percentage.
“Kevin has been a four-year member of our varsity program, so seeing him earn PIHL Class 2A Player of the Month is really special,” Bethel Park coach Mike Schall said. “He’s a great kid with a strong work ethic, and his early success this season is well-deserved. Watching his growth and maturity over the years has been fun, and we’re proud of the leader he’s become for our team.
“Kevin’s biggest strengths as a goaltender are his competitiveness and his ability to stay calm under pressure. He battles on every puck and has worked extremely hard to develop into the goalie he is today. His consistency and poise really set him apart.”
Teamann, a 6-foot senior, stopped 87 of 95 shots in the five games that he manned the net.
“I was overcomed with joy and incredibly thankful to even be nominated for such an award,” Teamann said. “I was honestly pretty shocked. I think throughout the league there are many deserving players, so I feel incredibly honored to be chosen for it.
“We definitely had some ups and downs in the beginning of the season. Despite that, we addressed our issues and as a team could not be happier with the results. This is one of the most tightly knit group of teammates I’ve ever been a part of, and I think when you have a team that you can rely on the person next to you, no matter who it is, nothing but good results will come from it.”
Teamann and sophomore Logan Colella have been sharing goaltending duties for the Black Hawks this season. Colella was 2-1 with a 1.67 GAA and .884 save percentage with one shutout.
Teamann held a 3-1-1 record with a 1.77 GAA and .928 save percentage. He allowed nine goals on 125 shots while making 116 saves.
“Kevin’s performance reflects not only his exceptional skill but also his dedication to the program and commitment to excellence,” Schall said.
Bethel Park started out 1-2-1 before losing a 3-2 decision to Hempfield.
The Black Hawks bounced back with consecutive wins against Bishop McCort, 5-2, Baldwin, 10-0, and Cathedral Prep, 3-1, to improve to 4-2-1 overall.
“We’re starting to build as a team,” Schall said. “The players are starting to come together both on and off the ice, and it’s a great group of young men who truly play for each other. It’s been fun to watch.
“We also have a tremendous leadership group guiding the team. Our goal for the season is to continue growing and developing, getting better each day and building momentum as the regular season progresses.”
It’s rare for a team to score in double digits in a high school hockey game, and to register a shutout makes it a gem of a performance.
Against Baldwin, eight players netted goals for the winning side, led by senior forward Peter Velisaris with two goals and one assist and junior forward Luke Fauth with two goals, including one shorthanded score.
Junior defenseman Owen Riether and four forwards — senior Jack Hartman, freshman Dylan Hartman, junior Emerson Faust and sophomore Lucas Bombich — collected one goal and one assist apiece. Faust scored his when his team was shorthanded.
Rounding out the offensive explosion were junior forward Lukas Crisson with one goal, sophomore forward Ezra Kozak with two assists and senior defensemen Caden Busch and Keilen Jones with one assist apiece.
“We have a nice balance with this group,” Schall said. “Our seniors have been through the ups and downs over the last few years, and their leadership shows. We are led by captain Caden Busch, assistant captains Erik Husa, Peter Velisaris and Keilen Jones, along with Jack Hartman, Sinjin Stainbrook and Teamann. They’ve set the tone and have been tremendous so far, consistently leading the way for the team.
“Honestly, I could highlight the entire team at this point in the season for how they’ve played. Every guy is contributing in some way, both on and off the scoresheet.”
Riether led the team in scoring with six goals and four assists, good for 10 points. He was complemented by Dylan Hartman (4 goals, 3 assists), freshman forward Kai Decker (3 goals, 3 assists) and Busch (7 assists).
The race for first place was tight in Class 2A with four teams within shouting distance of the league leader, Penn-Trafford.
The Warriors were in first place with 18 points, followed by Bishop McCort, Hempfield and Armstrong with 17 and Bethel Park with 15.
“Expectations are high, to say the least,” Teamann said. “We have proven that we can compete with any team in our league and are fully confident that as a team we will continue to grow and get better as the season goes along.”
Schall is happy with the team’s effort so far.
“It’s been a great start to the season,” Schall said. “The players are showing up at the rink ready to work, and our (assistant) coaches — Jason Bauer, Alex Blum and Tyler Miller, all Bethel Park alumni — have been fantastic. They’re always prepared and ready to lead this team.
“We’re excited to see where the season goes from here.”
