Leechburg ground game leads way past Riverview

Leechburg running back Timmy Andrasy started off his season with 89 yards in a loss against Apollo-Ridge. It was small potatoes in comparison to his 310 yards against Bethlehem Center a week later, 219 yards a week after that versus Serra Catholic and 162 yards in a 27-18 win Friday night over Riverview.

What caused this drastic change in production for Andrasy?

“We’re able to battle back,” Andrasy said. “We really grew together as a team. Our team chemistry has grown so much over the weeks. And I’ve got to thank my teammates. Really, it’s not just me.”

The Blue Devils (3-1) started off slowly against the Raiders (2-2). But they gradually and systematically dismantled their opponent’s defense with blistering runs from Andrasy and a few critical rushing and passing from quarterback Jaxon Vargo. But Leechburg coach Randy Walters gave a huge credit to fewer penalties.

“We made a lot of mistakes. Last week, we played decent, but we had a lot of penalties,” Walters said. “This week, we cleaned that up a lot and the line just did a great job.”

After the teams traded two punts each to start, Leechburg finally put its vaunted rushing attack to good use. Vargo rifled a deep ball to Kaedyn Joris for a 32-yard pass down the right side to put the Blue Devils in Raiders territory. Later in the drive, Vargo ran up the middle and broke away from the initial scrum before bulldozing his way for the first score of the night.

But Riverview’s offense also woke up in the second quarter. Raiders running back Kaden Levy took over, picking up a first down in Blue Devil territory before taking a pitch untouched for a 40-yard touchdown. The only thing keeping Leechburg ahead was a blocked extra-point attempt.

With the game morphing into an offensive grudge match, Leechburg responded with a score of its own. The Blue Devils’ last drive of the first half was a tradeoff between Vargo and Andrasy. Vargo rushed for 17 yards, and Andrasy picked up 37 on the drive, pounding in his first touchdown of the night from the 1-yard line.

The second half started the same way it ended for Leechburg: pounding the rock with the senior back. Andrasy sprinted down to the 19-yard line for a gain of 46 yards. Four runs later, he took a toss to the right side for a 6-yard score, extending his team’s lead to 13 points.

Following a three-and-out and a partially blocked punt that put the Blue Devils at their opponents’ 22-yard line, it took four plays for Andrasy to score, the last one on a 5-yard rush.

A turnover on downs from Riverview late in the third quarter gave Leechburg the chance to kill as much clock as possible.

But as much as the Raiders seemed powerless to stop the senior, they did force a punt, setting up a productive drive capped off by a 32-yard pitch and sprint touchdown from Levy.

Following a punt from Leechburg, Connor Kmetz found a darting Rio Stotts on a post route for a 64-yard touchdown. But after the teams traded punts, kicker and defensive Mason Scitticatt intercepted a wobbly Kmetz pass to seal the victory.

“We gotta execute our plays better,” Riverview coach Trevor George said. “I think that’s the biggest thing for us.”

With enough mistakes by the Raiders, it was only fitting that Vargo and Andrasy were the ones standing on the field as the final whistle blew in victory formation.
