The Leechburg football team has not lost back-to-back games in the regular season since early in the covid-shortened 2020 season.
The Blue Devils hope to keep that streak going Friday.
Leechburg, which suffered a shutout loss to Class A juggernaut Clairton in Eastern Conference play last Friday, will look to rebound at home against Brentwood in a key battle rife with playoff implications for both teams.
“Coming back from a loss is no different than coming back from a win,” said Leechburg coach Randy Walters, whose team stands at 5-2 overall and 3-1 in conference play.
“We watched the film Saturday and came back Monday ready to prepare for Brentwood. We’ve done a pretty good job of going week to week and even day by day, staying in the moment and focusing on having the best possible practice. They knew before and after the game with Clairton that it wasn’t going to make or break our season. We wish we would’ve given them a better test, but we didn’t do that. That wasn’t because of us. It was because of them and how good they are. The kids didn’t quit at all last Friday, but we are just nowhere close to Clairton right now and that’s just the way it is.”
Walters said his team is focused squarely on Brentwood this week and is not looking past Friday to next week’s clash with Greensburg Central Catholic.
“We know what’s in front of us,” Walters said. “Brentwood has a much better team this year. They are better up front. They have a tough quarterback who can sling the ball around and also tuck it under and run. They have a number of skill kids who can get the job done. It is not going to be easy on Friday.”
Clairton (5-0) can clinch the conference title Saturday with a win at Riverview.
Leechburg hopes to solidify its second-place spot in the standings.
The top three teams from each of the four Class A conferences automatically qualify for the WPIAL playoffs, which begin Oct. 31.
Four additional wild-card spots will be determined by the WPIAL selection committee.
Leechburg didn’t play Springdale in Week 5 after Dynamos athletic officials requested and were granted a postponement because of a lack of enough healthy players to properly move forward with the game. Whether the game will be made up has yet to be determined.
“It’s crazy how fast the season goes,” Walters said. “You are so focused on each week by itself, and then you look up and there is just two weeks left in the regular season. We tell the kids often to cherish these opportunities because they are gone in a heartbeat. We have some work to do before we hopefully find ourselves in the playoffs with an opportunity to do some things.”
Senior tailback Timmy Andrasy continues to lead the Blue Devils. He is sixth in the WPIAL in rushing with more than 1,150 yards to go along with 19 touchdowns.
Brentwood fell to Jeannette, 23-18, last week. At 2-3 in conference play and 3-5 overall, the Spartans can make their case for a wild card with an upset win Friday.
There is a log jam of four teams, including Frazier, Greensburg Central Catholic and Riverview, at 2-3 in conference play behind Clairton (5-0), Leechburg (3-1) and Jeannette (3-2).
One team is guaranteed to move to 3-3 as Frazier and GCC meet Friday.
Brentwood rolled past Springdale, 42-0, in Week 3 and scored an important 27-14 win over Riverview two weeks later to help keep it alive in the postseason hunt.
The Spartans will be heavy underdogs against Clairton in next week’s regular-season finale.
Brentwood dug itself a 16-0 deficit against the Jayhawks in the second quarter before it began a rally. Junior Daysaun Spencer, the 2025 WPIAL and PIAA Class 2A triple jump champion, helped the cause with a 7-yard touchdown reception from senior quarterback Cedric Davis Jr. before halftime and a 5-yard TD run in the third quarter.
Davis Jr. kept the Spartans alive in the fourth with a 1-yard scoring run.
The dual-threat signal-caller, who threw for more than 1,200 yards and 18 touchdowns a year ago, finished Friday’s game 10 of 17 passing for 102 yards. He rushed 25 times for 128 yards.
Sophomore Parish Thornhill hauled in five passes for 62 yards in the loss.
