They needed the rulebook to decide Wednesday’s WPIAL Class 2A Section 6 match between Greensburg Salem and Valley.
The match ended deadlocked at 30-30, but after the official looked at the scorebook, Valley was awarded the victory for most matches won, 6-5.
Greensburg Salem coach Randy Parsley actually cut Valley coach Dane Johnson a break. One of wrestlers weighed in but was not on the weigh-in sheet. Parsley said he knew the wrestler weighed in and allowed him to be put into the lineup.
The match came down to the final bout between Valley’s Ryan Long and Greensburg Salem’s Jordan Anker at 152 pounds. Long was able to get a third-period pin that tied the score. Anything less than the pin, and Greensburg Salem would have walked away with the win.
“Ryan came through for us,” Johnson said. “We wouldn’t have won. I think they wrestled in the tournament on Saturday, and he did not get the pin. So that was nice for him.
“The same things happened last year with coming down to the tiebreaker. We were involved in a couple matches.”
Valley also got an 8-5 win by Damien Black over Sadie Sarver at 127 and a 4-1 win by Josue Martinez over Elijah Miller at 133. The Vikings, like Greensburg Salem, collected three forfeits.
Greensburg Salem stayed alive by pins from Nick Reinhart at 121 and Keegan Young at 145.
Both wrestlers were trailing after two periods before rallying.
“They were nice wins by Nick and Keegan,” Parsley said. “That kid had beaten Nick in the past, and Keegan had beaten his wrestler before. We just needed to stay off our back. I thought we wrestled well. I’m pleased. We just have too many holes in our lineup.”
