Luke Scarff sets school’s all-time scoring record, wants to end South Park’s section title drought

Luke Scarff entered this basketball season just 41 points shy of becoming South Park’s all-time leading scorer. But the 6-foot-8 forward didn’t always envision himself being in such a position.

“It’s a great feeling,” Scarff said. “I’ve been at South Park ever since kindergarten, but I never really imagined myself to be the all-time scorer. … I was just happy to be on varsity as a freshman. That was the main goal.”

Scarff scored 23 and 29 points in the Eagles’ first two games to give him 1,274 career points, surpassing Tom Bigley’s mark set in 2011.

With the record secured so early in the season, Scarff now has his eyes set on earning his first Division I offer. So far, he only has one offer from Division II Point Park, but he hopes to round out his game to meet the Division I standards.

“I’m a bigger kid right now, but, you know, in college, it’s just a whole different level,” Scarff said.

“It’s going to be a lot more bigger kids than me. But right now, I’m just trying to focus on more of my shot, building a better foundation and my dribbling. And, yeah, just better court vision as well. Just more like a guard.”

Scarff’s love for basketball and understanding of what he needs to do to reach the next level can be attributed to his older brother, Jacob, who played at Seton LaSalle and at Division III Westminster.

“He started me off playing basketball really young, and he’s a big supporter,” Luke Scarff said. “I mean, he’s always there at the games, always wanted me to push harder and harder every day.

“He’s told me already that college is a whole different level; doesn’t matter if it’s Division I to JUCO? There’s still some really, really good players in all different levels. So I just got to be working as hard as I can, pushing myself, because you never know what’s going to happen at that next level.”

While Luke Scarff has his own individual goals for the season, he still wants to see his team succeed in his final year. A run to the WPIAL finals is at the top of the list, but the Eagles haven’t won a section title in 28 years. Scarff would like to change that.

Last season, South Park finished runner-up in Section 3-3A, its highest placement in 11 seasons. This year, the Eagles are off to a 2-0 start after winning their first two games by an average of 34.5 points. Scarff is averaging 26 points across those two contests.

He has already accomplished something he never thought was possible. Could he also help deliver the first section championship in nearly three decades, or possibly the program’s first WPIAL title?

“Of course, the biggest goal is going to the WPIAL championships,” he said, “but our school hasn’t won a section championship (since 1998). I’m trying to make history with that as well.”
