Mapletown High School FINALLY has something to celebrate on the athletic field. We have seen long losing streaks by schools in various sports, but Friday nights victory for the Maples over the West Greene Pioneers 43-28 was not only the first victory of the year for the boys basketball team, it was the first win for Mapletown this school year in ANY sport.
This past fall, the Maples football team finished 0-9 while the girls' volleyball team didn't win a game either, finishing 0-12.
Up until Friday, the boys basketball team was 0-11 while the girls hoop teams mark was 0-13.
Friday night at home against West Greene, Mapletown led 15-12 at halftime before a big third quarter in which the Maples outscored the Pioneers 19-4 helped lead the black and gold to that elusive first victory this school year.
Marcus Cumpston led the way with a game high 20 points while William Cox added 12 for the Maples. West Greene, which fell to 0-12 for the season, was led by J.R. Young's 12 points.
