Mark Jones knew about Riverview football very well from his time as the head coach at rival Leechburg.
He got an even more intimate view of the program and the kids who formed its core the past several years as an assistant coach with the Raiders offensive line.
Now, Jones is ready to return to the head coaching rankings.
Riverview hired Jones in a unanimous vote at Monday’s school board meeting, putting him at the helm of a program thirsty to end a decade-long absence from the WPIAL playoffs.
Athletic director Andre Carter said Jones has a great rapport with the current and future players in the program.
“He already had a great relationship with the kids and he understood a lot about them,” Carter said.
“Knowing his connection to his linemen, they would run through a brick wall for him. He already has that strong relationship with them, as well as with the administration and in the community. It is a great fit, and he also has that prior head coaching experience. Now, he can teach his philosophy. He is really ready to get going.”
Jones ascends to the top at Riverview and replaces Trevor George, who stepped down after this past season to become the head coach at Blackhawk.
Carter said several team members were on hand at Monday’s meeting to support Jones.
“He’s always been such a big part of the Riverview community and athletics.” Carter said. “It’s really nice to have him lead the football program.”
Riverview finished the 2025 season 4-6 overall and 2-5 in Eastern Conference play with conference victories over Greensburg Central Catholic and Springdale and nonconference triumphs against Beth-Center and Valley.
Carter’s connection with Jones goes back to Leechburg when Carter came aboard as the Blue Devils’ girls basketball coach in 2018 and Jones was the athletic director.
Jones retired from his AD post and had resigned as Leechburg’s football coach in early 2020, right before the start of the covid pandemic.
Carter took over as Leechburg AD at the same time Randy Walters became the Blue Devils head coach. Carter said he valued his interactions with Jones during the transition.
Leechburg football was still hoping to break a long playoff drought at the time, but things in the program already were looking strong. The Blue Devils went 5-5 in each of Jones’ final two seasons of his nine-year tenure as coach.
