McDowell knocks off Hempfield to win regional girls team bowling title

McDowell went undefeated in six games in the finals, defeating top-seeded Hempfield in the championship match to win the Western PA Regional High School Bowling girls team title Sunday.

McDowell swept the best-of-three finals, winning 188-159 and 178-171.

Led by two of the top four individual bowlers, Hempfield was the top team in qualifying with a 3,938 three-game total. Amelia Droste of the Spartans led qualifiers with a 635 series and 246 high game. Ahsley Bensur was fourth with a 602 series and 22 high game.

Plum (3,673) was second in qualifying, led by second-place individual qualifier Callie Schimmer with a 627 series and 213 high game.

McDowell (3,582) was third. Freeport (3,412), led by Kylie McConahy with a 608 series and 236 high game, was fourth. Shaler (3,175) and Deer Lakes (3,072) rounded out the list of qualifying teams in the top six.

Latrobe, led by fifth-place qualifier Kate Kerchner with a 592 series and 244 high game, finished seventh and just missed making the finals.

In the quarterfinals, McDowell swept Deer Lakes, 168-145 and 173-125, and Freeport defeated Shaler, 180-165 and 171-153.

In the semifinals, McDowell swept Plum, 176-147 and 202-152. The other semifinal was the only three-set match with Freeport winning the first game, 187-179, and Hempfield taking the next two, 216-173 and 176-164.
