This is the sixth year McKeesport is playing its homecoming game on a Saturday afternoon, and the Tigers have been successful in extending the party and successfully welcoming back the school’s alumni.

McKeesport is 4-1 on Saturday afternoons at George Smith Field and has outscored opponents 182-58 in those victories.

The Tigers’ lone Saturday afternoon home loss was to Penn-Trafford, 28-0 in 2014. The Warriors also handed McKeesport their only loss this season.

McKeesport hosts Plum on Saturday in a Class A Big East Conference clash. It marks the second time in three years the Mustangs have been homecoming guests at McKeesport. The Tigers rolled to a 52-24 triumph in 2016.

Saturday WPIAL football slate

Both Mohawk and Western Beaver qualified for the district football playoffs last year, although neither school lasted long in November football.

The Warriors lost in the first round of the Class 2A playoffs 28-14 to East Allegheny while the Golden Beavers were ousted in round one of the Class A postseason 28-8 by Carmichaels.

Both teams are off to good starts in the Class 2A Midwestern Athletic Conference as they prepare to square off Saturday in a game on the TribLive High School Sports Network .

Mohawk is 2-1 in the conference, while Western Beaver is a half game back at 1-1.

The 2017 playoff trips were the first for the Golden Beavers since 2013, while the drought was a lot longer for the Warriors, who tasted postseason action for the first time since 2005.

Also on Saturday, East Allegheny visits Summit Academy, Northgate hosts Cornell and South Fayette and Hopewell will resume their game that was suspended on Friday with the Lions leading 14-0 after one quarter.

Pitch perfect Saturday afternoon soccer

There are six WPIAL soccer teams with a perfect record that will hit the field late morning or early afternoon for soccer section action on Saturday.

Two of those perfect teams are on the girls’ side as Mars (5-0-0) visits Indiana in a Section 1-3A match while Greensburg Central Catholic (3-0-0) will host Springdale in a Section 1-A match.

Four undefeated and untied boys teams will try to stay perfect on the pitch.

West Allegheny (10-0-0) will go out of section when it hosts Mt. Lebanon, while Franklin Regional (7-0-0), Keystone Oaks (7-0-0) and Charleroi (7-0-0) face section challenges.

Franklin Regional hosts Gateway in Section 4-3A, Keystone Oaks visits South Park in a battle of the top two teams in Section 1-2A and Charleroi is at Southmoreland in Section 3-2A.
