The search for a new boys basketball coach has come to an end in Monessen.
With a vote Monday, the Monessen school board hired Dan Bosnic to fill the vacancy left after longtime coach Joe Salvino took the job at Belle Vernon.
Most recently, Bosnic was the coach at Connellsville from the 2009-10 season through 2013-14.
“Monessen is a great, established program,” Bosnic said. “Coach Salvino had a lot of success there, and I see it as a very attractive opportunity. I'm hoping to come in and build on that and bring something different.”
Bosnic isn't a stranger to the district. He taught the family and consumer science course at Monessen from 2005-07.
Before earning his education degrees, Bosnic played tight end at Temple after graduating from Laurel Highlands. He finished his college education at Cal (Pa.).
“Knowing the district definitely played a role in wanting this job,” Bosnic said. “It helps having a familiarity with the students and the makeup of the district. I really enjoyed working there with the teachers and administration.”
Bosnic is the assistant to the superintendent in the Uniontown Area School District.
“I plan on getting in the gym as fast as we can,” Bosnic said. “I want to get acclimated as soon as I can with the players, and I want them to get to know me as soon as possible.”
As for style of play, it's possible not much will change.
“I want to play aggressive and be great on defense,” Bosnic said. “We want to pressure people and use that to be able to get easy baskets.”
Bosnic plans on enforcing discipline.
“The players are going to know early on the expectations I am going to have,” Bosnic said. “I expect my team to be disciplined on and off the court.”
