18 holes wasn’t enough to decide the WPIAL AAA Boys Golf Individual Championship. Chris Sabol, of Moon, beat Brady Pevarnik, of Latrobe, on the first hole of Sudden-death play to capture the title. Both finished the round at even par of 70, two shots ahead of the third-place finisher Palmer Jackson.
Sabol, a senior, best finish in the WPIAL was 29th in 2016 after failing to qualify in Freshman and Sophomore years. “This was something that I wanted to do for a long time” said Sabol. After a bogey on the 15th tee he told himself “got to get 2 back on the final three”. That is exactly what he did. Going birdie, par, birdie, and then par on the playoff hole.
The returning champion Gregor Meyer of Fox Chapel was looking to become the first defending champion since Mike Van Sickle of Pine Richland in 03/04. Tuesday was just not that day for Meyer with a score of 77. Still good enough to move on to the PIAA Western Regionals. The other champion in the field that was littered with experience was Hunter Bruce of Peters Township. Bruce won the WPIAL in 2015 and was in the final group this year. Bruce like Meyer is also going back to the state tournament.
Other qualifier’s notes:
Donnie Professori is the only sophomore that qualified. Half the field is advancing to the state tournament for the first time. Palmer Jackson of Franklin Regional eagled 13th hole, the only eagle of the day.
The Western Regionals for the PIAA tournament is set for Monday. October 16th at Tom’s Run Golf Course at Chestnut Ridge Golf Resort, Blairsville.
