Senior attack Anna Albers scored 4 goals and added 4 assists and fellow senior Sophia Klaber added 4 goals of her own to lead the Mt. Lebanon to a 14-9 win over Chartiers Valley at Highmark Stadium, giving the Blue Devils their second championship in the past three years. The WPIAL Girls Division 1 title is the fifth title overall for Mt. Lebanon.
Klaber and sophomore Cora Broadhurst scored the first two goals of the game and the Blue Devils never trailed against their Section 1 rival Chartiers Valley. Senior midfielder Maria Stamerra got the Colts on the board at the 7:09 mark of the first period with the first of her 6 goals in the game. But Albers on a step out move and sophomore Lexi Gibbons answered for Mt. Lebanon to make the score 4-1.
Stamerra, who is headed to the University of Cincinnati to play collegiately, scored a pair of free position goals to pull the Colts within a goal. But that was as close as Chartiers Valley would come in this contest. Junior Kate Sramac answered with a free position goal of her own and Lehigh bound senior Megan Gibbons converted an Albers feed in front to give the Blue Devils a 6-3 lead.
Albers scored her second of the half at 21:34 before CV senior midfielder Margo Mason closed out the first half with a man up goal off an assist by Stamerra with: 55 left to make the halftime score 7-4 Mt. Lebanon.
Stamerra scored her fourth goal of the game 2:31 into the second half as the Colts cut the lead to 2, but it seemed that every time Chartiers Valley came back, Mt. Lebanon countered. Klaber notched her second goal less than two minutes later and Albers followed up with consecutive scores at 5:57 and 7:44 to give Mt. Lebanon a 10-5 lead.
Thirty seconds after the Albers goals, Stamerra netted her 5th goal, only to see Sramac score: 16 later. Stamerra one timed a Mason feed past Mt. Lebanon’s senior goalie Renee Cline to make it an 11-7 game at 11:10.
But, the quick strike Blue Devils answered: 23 later when sophomore Ally Klaber deposited an Albers pass behind sophomore Grace Schneider to put Mt. Lebanon up 12-7.
Albers appeared to get her 5th goal of the game at 12:21, but it was waived off due to an illegal stick. That gave Mason a chance to step up and she scored the game’s next two goals to pull the Colts within three goals at 12-9.
Once again, the Blue Devils answered with an Ally Klaber goal off an Albers assist: 42 later. Sophia Klaber rounded out the scoring at 22:57 with her fourth goal of the game to make the final score 14-9.
Second-seeded Mt. Lebanon, who was appearing in the title game for the third consecutive year, improved to (17-2) on the year and the Blue Devils now have captured championships in 2004, 2005, 2006, 2014 and 2016. The championship appearance was the 8th all-time for Mt. Lebanon and marked the second gold medal for head coach Brian Kattan. For the Colts, it was the third loss of the season, with all three coming at the hands of Mt. Lebanon. Chartiers Valley finishes the WPIAL slate with a record of (12-3).
Both teams have qualified for the state playoffs and will start the PIAA tournament on June 1st.
