Mt. Pleasant boys soccer coach Floyd Snyder wore a gray suit with a red and blue tie and dress shoes and capped his outfit with a blue visor to lead his team Tuesday night.
The coach looked dapper in his senior night attire, the 18th year he’s dressed up for the occasion.
His team also looked debonair as section champions.
Behind a first-half goal from Grant Zahrobsky, Mt. Pleasant captured its first section title in five years with a 1-0 victory over Charleroi in a spirited Section 4-2A finale at Viking Stadium.
The win came on the night before the WPIAL announces playoff pairings and could boost the Vikings’ seeding and give them a home game in the first round.
Mt. Pleasant (14-4, 13-1) has won seven straight games. It will take a wave of momentum into the playoffs, which will start this weekend or early next week.
“We played with more passion and heart, and we showed it tonight,” Zahrobsky said. “Someone asked me what I thought would happen tonight, and I said we’d win 1-0. Everyone was so hungry for this.”
The Vikings defense limited the high-scoring Cougars (13-4, 12-2), who were going for their third straight section title.
“We knew it would be close,” Snyder said, his suit drenched with water after players doused him in the closing seconds. “These guys finished second two of the last three years so I am happy for them. They deserved this.”
Mt. Pleasant, in the playoffs for the sixth straight season, had not won a section title since 2020 when it shared the crown with Charleroi.
Charleroi, which won the first matchup 3-0, will look to rebound in the postseason but will have to play without its standout goal scorer in at least the first round.
Dylan Klinger, who has more than 100 career goals and 33 for the season, received a red card with just over two minutes remaining. That comes with at least a one-game suspension.
“Mt. Pleasant is a good team, and they know how to adjust,” Charleroi coach Tim Laskey said. “We like to play fast, but they closed lanes on us and kept us off the board.”
As for the loss of Klinger, Laskey said: “Teams know we have an 11-man unit. This takes a big part out of our game plan.”
Zahrobsky gave Mt. Pleasant a lead in the 35th minute on a goal that was as big as it was smart.
Charleroi slipped up slightly, and the Vikings pounced.
As Ethan Hartley attempted to head the ball back to Cougars goalie Max Goodwin, Zahrobsky sneaked into frame, intercepted the ball and banged in the score — his 13th of the season.
“Grant was like a bull in a China shop tonight,” Snyder said. “He looked like a Celtic warrior with that hair and headband.”
Zahrobsky said the goal was reactionary.
“The goalie was late to react,” he said. “I saw the ball bounce into the box and went for it. This was a game where you thought the first team to score was going to win.”
Grayson Gardner made three saves in goal for the Vikings. Both teams had five shots.
