Mt. Pleasant All-American swimmer David Mutter rebooted his recruitment when Alabama pulled his scholarship at the beginning of the year because of SEC- and NCAA-imposed roster cuts.

But the standout has a new college target.

Mutter, a specialist in the butterfly, committed to St. Bonaventure (N.Y.) and will soon sign with the Bonnies of the Atlantic 10.

He had signed with Alabama in November before sweeping changes washed away his plans and cramped his future. Calling himself “one of the unlucky ones,” he forgave Alabama and set out to find a new destination.

Pitt offered a walk-on spot, and Purdue showed initial interest in Mutter, who has won 10 gold medals competing in high-level WPIAL and PIAA meets.

“It’s good that now I have found my college,” Mutter said. “It is good to have that stress off my shoulders.”

Mutter is the WPIAL and PIAA record holder in the 100-yard butterfly.

He also collected five silver medals in district and state competitions.

This season, he helped lead the Mt. Pleasant boys to a PIAA team title.

A 4.0 student, Mutter was recently named a James Collins Scholar-Athlete Award winner by the WPIAL and given a $1,000 scholarship.
