Neshannock pitcher Addyson Frye led the Lancers to a fourth straight WPIAL title Thursday, tossing a four-hitter with 11 strikeouts in a 7-1 victory over Chartiers-Houston in the Class 2A championship game at Cal (Pa.).
Top-seeded Neshannock (22-0) dominated opponents all season, and it was business as usual for the Lancers, who scored early and often on their way to the win.
“Is there any other group of seniors that have done what these girls have done? Four WPIALs in a row,” Neshannock coach Jackie Lash said. “That is so hard. Only losing one game out of 90-plus games. It’s nothing short of amazing. … I feel like I get to be a part of it because I get to watch these girls do this, and that’s such a good feeling.”
In the first inning, Neshannock center fielder Miley Anderson singled to lead off and advanced to second following third baseman Taryne Drilak’s throwing error. With one out, Frye singled to right field and moved up to second base on the second throwing error of the inning, which also advanced Anderson to third. Then, catcher Gabby Quinn drove her home on a fielder’s choice for the game’s first run and the first of her three RBIs.
The bottom of the first inning was symbolic of the game. Neshannock capitalized following the Bucs’ misplays. Chartiers-Houston (20-2) nearly averaged nine runs per game entering Thursday, but the Bucs could not solve Frye’s pitching and experience, as the senior righty won a fourth district championship.
“You’ve got to be in a low-scoring game with this team,” Chartiers-Houston coach Tricia Alderson said. “You can’t make four errors. Just can’t do it. I knew we had to play clean.”
In the third inning, the Lancers added to their lead. Frye walked and Quinn followed with an infield single. After a bunt, Biondi grounded out to second baseman Seanna Riggle, who stepped on first base for the out. That allowed Ella Skodak, who courtesy ran for Frye, to score. Later, Antuono singled up the middle for the second RBI of the inning.
Frye, a Providence recruit, went 1 for 3 on the day. Her strength in this matchup was in the circle and in adjusting the strategy of the defense.
“Obviously, when they go through the lineup more than once, more than twice, they change, so we have to change too,” Frye said.
Neshannock continued growing the lead with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Quinn smacked a two-run double to center field, scoring center fielder Jaidon Nogay and Anderson, and Paglia also doubled to center field to bring Quinn home.
Neshannock added another run in the fifth when Anderson reached on the fourth error of the game and second of the inning. That error brought Gianna DeSalvo, who got on base from a fielder’s choice, across home plate.
Chartiers-Houston kept fighting until the game’s conclusion. Senior catcher Ella Richey got one back for the Bucs in the sixth inning after tripling to right field and progressing home following an errant throw from second baseman Brenna Frengel. Afterward, although in vain, she fired up the team to try to start a rally.
“That’s Ella,” Alderson said. “We count on her to do that all the time, and I’m glad that she and the team battled.”
In the loss, Chartiers-Houston pitcher Meadow Ferri allowed seven runs (five earned) and eight hits, while she struck out four and walked two.
Neshannock will play Sharpsville, the runner-up of District 10, in the first round of the PIAA tournament Monday. Charters-Houston will face Cranberry, the champions of District 9.
“We’re just continuing to work on that one through nine. We will continue to work on defense,” Lash said. “We know that Addy is going to pitch great … (but) she’s not going to strike everybody out.”
